As a reader who loves the pain of being absolutely wrecked by a book, I will say about halfway through that this really did it for me. However, Nikolai’s redemption arc wasn’t quite as thorough as I thought it should be. Though Leah makes it clear she will not easily forgive him for his crimes against her, I find that she does just that. I wish she would’ve made him work for it a bit more. I wish she would’ve called him out on a few things rather than being so kind-and-pure-and-perfect-and-understanding. The weak to strong trope was lacking, the redemption arc was lacking, but I honestly loved how the author didn’t shy away from Nikolai’s submission to darkness. That part was well done and believable. It was easy to understand his pain and how his past experiences guided his actions and lead to his all-consuming need for revenge.
