I have been a long time fan of Twisted Sister and Dee Snider. Met him once at a horror con and he lived up to his reputation. A very cool dude. Having seen that he had written a book, I knew I had to read it. You know what? “Frats” is actually a pretty solid book. It’s hard for me to resonate with some of the characters and decision making. One, I did not attend school in the 70’s so it’s hard to understand that upbringing. Two, I am not pro-frat. I attended college and had my own run in’s with the fraternal orders but nothing on the level of this story apparently based on true events. It’s ruthless as the story is part “Warriors” (Walter Hill film) and “Animal House” set with a high school back drop. It’s essentially a story about the ripple effect that decisions create, no matter how great our intentions might be at the time the decision was made. Dee writes as he is telling his own story, and maybe he is. As a Twisted Sister fan, some parallels are noticed throughout their music. For instance, on their song “Come Out And Play,” we get a very “Warriors-like” intro.

Again, this is a solid debut and I hope to read more from Dee in the future.

If The Outsiders meets The Loser Club from Stephen King’s It. An amazing coming-of-age story to read.

My honest review. Dee Snider did an amazing job writing his first book. He is a fascistic storyteller. Reading Frats had me on the edge of my seat. This whole story felt like I was reading the kids from Stephen King’s It, without an alien clown terrifies them. Just gangs on gangs violence. Give it a read! You will be on a journey through boyhood in the 70s.

This was an interesting one. It was good. I’ll recommend it but it also leaves you wanting more. The abrupt ending just makes you want more closure. I was involved in Greek life in college and it was one of the better things to have happened to me. My brothers in Alpha Tau Omega took care of me and really helped, tried to anyways, me get my shit together. I just wasn’t ready to do it. I can’t imagine Greek life starting in highschool. The world Dee describes is an entirely different universe than anything I’ve ever experienced. A good book with a tragically quick ending that leaves you wanting more.

3.5 stars rounded up.

I would not have normally picked this book up but I went to a book signing to meet Dee at a local record store and decided to read it! It very much gave me the feel of The Outsiders (which I am not a fan of The Outsiders lol) but this story hooked me right from the start. If Dee truly wrote this himself (not sure if there was a ghost writer/help) then he is a great story teller and hope he writes more novels in the future. I would recommend for anyone that likes a quick/simple read.

It reminds me of The Warriors movie, but narrated by Dee Snider. He has the gift of gab and it makes his writings fun to read. If you're a fan, definitely check it out.
