I've had this one on my kindle for a while and now I know why. lol
This book just didn't work for me. Maybe I should of read the YA version instead. But I can't make myself try that version or even try to go any further. I didn't care for or connect to any of the characters in the book.

I promise that I'm not being dramatic or trying to be mean, but this is what I imagine would happen if an author were to trip on a shit ton of pharmaceutical substances while watching something like...

description

That said, I did keep reading. While the plot twists are glaringly obvious, there's still this WTF element to it that's hard to look away from.

What's What

The blurb doesn't really tell you what you're getting here.

Girl sees people's deaths through touch. It's a burden, a curse. She has one friend, who's a bitch. Enter two hot dudes different as *clears throat* day and night. While she favors one over the other and only has sex with one, this is still A TRIANGLE!!

What follows is 80% YA fluff - panty dropping swoon, dates, making out, parties. Some artsy shit & poetry is thrown in. And the whole thing is sprinkled with mofos dying every five minutes minutes.

It's overwritten.

Subject shifts are jarring, but I'll say the author at least gives that a purpose by the end.

The last 20% is the best part of the book. All is pretty much expected, but the pacing speeds up and provides some action at least.

However, it does feel like we've circled the globe here just for the FMC to figure out what she should've known all along and end up in pretty much the same spot she starts the book.

And, there are a shit ton of plot questions that should've been answered here but aren't.

Mild Cliffhanger ending.

Rewrite

This book was rewritten from a YA novel. Yes, it includes some graphic sexual scenes, language, and murder. BUT, aside from the subject matter, this STILL READS LIKE YA. The dialogue, actions, and setting all have a juvenile tone.

Bottom Line

Pacing is slow.

Lots of useless, fluffy info.

Not a fan of the author 's writing and storytelling style.

The frequency of the artsy, poetry prose became annoying.

I did like the premise and bones of the story.

The characters came across as YA high school kids, not 19 + year-olds.

The FMC's stupidity and disbelief over what she is and what the guys are is unbelievable.

Overall, 2 unimpressed stars:/

Couldn't finish this one. I thought it was badly written almost as if the author had rushed through it. It had a very overdone, melodramatic, and juvenile feel to it. Not something I was looking for.

A lot of the language and dialogue was extremely fanciful. Not to mention, it was all about the raven. Ravens abounded. They were everywhere. Not only as a reference to the actual bird, but as the name of Ember's friend; it was also used as a descriptor. There were a lot of raven feathers, too.

Moreover, there were aspects that bothered me. For example, the story makes it seem like ritualistic murder was an everyday thing. There wasn't any real lead up to this story arc. Also, Ember doesn't tell Raven how she will die--at least not in the portion I read. She justifies this by saying death is written in stone; nobody can change it. How did she arrive at this conclusion? Why not tell Raven she's supposed to die a horrible painful death? The reason she gives for not trying to stop this wasn't adequate for me.

I don't know. I just didn't like it. The sex scenes weren't that good either. No real heat. Almost awkward. I expected more from this author.

Ah, what can I say about Ember X.

Well, for starters, it was bloody amazing; even though technically this is my second time to read the first book in the death collectors series. I'm not usually a "re-reader" because there are so many different books out there yet to be discovered, but I needed to read book two and three finally, and since I was buddy reading this with a friend and she had not read book one, I choose to give the adult version a go.

Let me start by saying I equally love "Ember" the YA version, as this version (Ember X) was not out when I stumbled upon Jessica Sorensen's books with "The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden", but holy hotness batman was this book so much better than the YA version. It had the juice that we all secretly wanted to come of Ember and Asher in the YA version -- at least to me. To my memory, there wasn't a single sexy scene in the other version (but it has been several years between readings, so my memory is a little rusty) Quite honestly, I'm not sure I've ever read this kind of heat in any of Jessica's books, but I tell you, she doesn't disappoint. As she still holds the top spot in "my favorite author" category, I've read almost all of her older books. (I've fallen far behind to date). But in all of those, at least the paranormal, the single only thing that was missing for me was I wanted more romance between the H/h. (Fallen stars/ souls series--I'm totally reading the adult versions of these next--and then Ember) But this -- Ember X was absolutely and utterly perfect. There wasn't a single thing that I longed for when reading, and even being the second time around, I was completely engrossed.

Originally, I remember it being difficult to choose between Cameron and Asher, because they both brought totally different aspects to the table. There's Cameron, the twisted bad boy that we all know and love that is utterly obsessed with her and has been around for the long haul. But then there's Asher, the sexy sweetheart that steals your heart and never gives it back. This time around was quite different however. I was torn with Cameron several times. At first he brought the lighthearted laughter that really makes you love him, but his constant flirting with the well-known Mackenzie Baker drove me mad, and for me, he lost mega points at the Lake scene and the night the cops arrived. (Cameron, you really had it going for you prior to this, even given your background) His powers go far beyond the book and even reach the reader. This, I know to be true, because as I finished this epilogue, reading what he wrote for the second time around, I find myself being torn again. Even in his twisted existence I believe he truly loves her, and that's what makes it hard to hate him. His persistence is what saves him.

Asher, my beautiful broken man, comes in with a number one in consistency. You have been a sweetheart throughout, yet totally hot nonetheless, and this is what gives you winning points with me. The ending hurt me as much as it did years ago when I read it, but at least this time I don't have to wait to read book two. Ah, the pull. Which will she choose? I can only guess a certain calmness in nature will be her ending path, but still, it won't be easy, because a certain someone has ways of pulling you to him, even in the middle of a hell storm.

This book is a solid 5 star for me. It has originality, it has heat, it has humor, and it has the brokenness that I love so much in my characters. Where will death take them next? I'm about to find out.

Ember X is a new adult version of young adult paranormal novel Ember by Jessica Sorensen. Ember, our narrator, has an unorthodox ability. Whenever she touches or is touched someone, Ember has a death omen: premonition how and when that person is going to die. Tortured by these painful and horrific visions (since in her town obviously no one never dies peacefully or from old age) Ember shuns away from human contact. With dead father, alcoholic mother and crazy-artistic brother, Ember's only confidant is her best friend who is outgoing, slutty, questionably loyal and party-loving'.

To make it a little bit more cliche (like this was not enough) enters a romance part of a story. Of course it's a love triangle and it has something for everyone's taste: one blond and one dark hot guy both new to town and both attracted to our heroine. There will be a lot of smoldering glances and Ember's insides will be 'curving and cultivating with so much sweltering heat'. I personally could not feel any heat, but maybe it's better, that thing that happens to her insides does not sound comfortable. But Ember obviously liked it, because she sometimes nearly has an orgasm just from heated glares exchange.

Ember was tough heroine to relate to. She was usually mopping around either because of her love dilemma, family problems or because she can not deal with her ability. With constant complains and dramatic self-pity through the whole book, Ember sounded more like a teenager/young adult then like a grown up. Although adding more sexual content pushed Ember X into new adult genre, the psychology of characters needed more change and work too, because some behaviour that can be tolerated for ya book feels out of place and immature in novel targeted for older audience.

The one part of Ember X I liked was the (surprise surprise) paranormal part. The lore about angels and grim reapers that Jessica Sorensen made up was interesting and we got introduced to the whole history gradually. Ember X is easy to read because proverbial carrot on a stick, aka new info about something, is always dangling just a little bit out of reach, so you trod along hoping to catch it and finally figure out what is really happening. As always, since this is a series, a some things are left unanswered for the sequel but I think we had good back story for the start.

Although I liked the paranormal elements of the story, the characters were too immature and dramatic, so I doubt that I will be continuing Death Collectors series. Fans of ya paranormal books who want to increase the heat to new adult level and who like angels, love triangles and tortured heroines will probably like Ember X by Jessica Sorensen but I recommend that you check an excerpt either via Amazon or some other website before buying. Or grab a Kindle ebook while it is still free. ;)

I made it about halfway through this thing.

I think where I went wrong here is that I downloaded Ember X, which is the adult version of this story. I think it probably does work as YA, but it was a complete and utter fail as an adult story, and the reason why is the author put absolutely NO EFFORT into making this an adult story. She simply changed a word here, a word there, a few details and then BLAMMO! Adult story.

Did. Not. Work.

Let me give you an example.

When Ember first meets Asher, their interaction goes like this:

Ember: Did you just move to Hollows Grove? I've never seen you around before.

Asher: Monday will be my first day. I just moved here from New York.

First day? First day of what? Living in Hollow's Grove? But obviously if he's there with her now, his first day has come and gone. So what? Obviously, in the YA version, Monday will be his first day of school, but as an adult, this interaction makes no sense.

Other things that allude to the author putting in no effort: the characters still live at home, they treat college exactly like high school, they go to house parties like high school kids. I mean, it was just really, really poorly done.

And the romance! HAH, the romance! It came at completely inappropriate times and again, just made no sense.

It would've taken a complete rewrite to make this an adult story and I guess Sorensen was just completely unwilling to put in the time to do that.

I would not recommend this version of the story to ANYONE. If you must read this book, read the YA version. If you're looking for a good adult read, stay far, far away.

Another winner from Jessica Sorenson! This book is deep, dark and smoldering. I've never read a more original plot that had me on the edge of my seat. I simply could not put this book down, nor could I put the rest of the series down!

It's titled Ember-X for a reason; it's deliciously X rated! Jessica took this paranormal to a whole new level that hasn't been done before, and added a whole new type of smokin' to the book. I loved every minute! ~ Kelly, 4.5 stars

Much like the original story with the review... but, the "hot" scenes... oh wow!

I really enjoyed re-reading this book with its minor changes. Everyone is more grown up in this story, but not much else has changed. I will say that it has grown the flame that makes me desperate for the next book! When? When is it coming out!?!

This was so bad! Just horrible, horrible, horrible. This is what you shouldn't do when you write a book. And the character's habit of not taking a shower was disgusting! Did anyone else notice? Gah!!!!

This version the book is an extended new adult edition of the YA release Ember, but I found the new parts clumsy and ultimately unnecessary. Which is not to say that I think I would have enjoyed the original YA version much better - this book has a premise that has been executed better elsewhere.

Ember can see your death just by touching you. So she doesn't have many friends and has a hard time going out in public. Parties, in particular, are hard for her, and forget about a boyfriend! The she meets Asher, and lo-and-behold, she can't see his death. She begins to crave the silence as their encounters become increasingly bizarre, full of heat filled eye contact and orgasm-inducing touches to shoulder, stomach and thighs.

The characterisation is hum-drum at best, I couldn't connect with any of the characters, and they all behaved irrationally and unpredictably. I think I could have really liked Ember's brother, but unfortunately he was kept in the background of the story and only pulled out when the author needed to prove that Ember is a family-oriented person despite her horrific home life.

The plot-line feels very formulaic, and I can't really say I was surprised at any time. Nor was I particularly excited or thrilled. Extending the novel to include a bloody bar fight didn't increase my enjoyment at all, but left me highly sceptical of that situation ever developing naturally in the real world. I felt similarly about the added sexual content in the novel.

There's an exasperating love triangle that really didn't turn out to be a love triangle (which I guess is a point for the book), some paranormal blah-blah about angels, a very four-base oriented physical aspect that made me gag in its ridiculousness (smexy times right after a bar fight, next to the back entrance of the bar? Seriously??), and no characters I can claim to like.

If you like your stories with love triangles featuring sexy boys and heroines with dark, difficult lives peppered with angel feathers, this book might be for you. If you're interested in this concept of a girl who can see death omens by touch, I strongly recommend Chuck Wendig's adult series about Miriam Black, starting with Blackbirds, which tackles this premise with a lot more finesse.

Currently putting up past reviews from my Blog on GR because I forgot at the time oops 😅

This novel didn't capture me the way a few other books by this author has. This is also the second time I read this novel and I can't really say it was all that memorable the first time around. The paranormal mythology that was created for the story was awesome though. I don't think I've read a book on angels with this twist.

Another qualm I had with this story was the pacing. The first 60% of this novel is Ember being freaked out, confused and scared. Sure there's the murder mystery going around but it wasn't all that intriguing after the third body dropped because there wasn't even a sprinkling of some semblance of answers.

Ember is an outcast and has been one ever since she was four. People blame her for things she had no hand in and she's just gotten accustomed to being a sad human being. I hated how meek and apologetic she was in situations that weren't her fault. I also hated how she put herself in situations where she clearly should've put her foot down and just said 'no' to.

I'm not a fan of either of the guys in this love triangle. Asher is alright, I guess, but Cameron is a psychopath and should be locked up. I don't understand the appeal to Cameron. All his scenes just made me feel like my skin was crawling.

When the story was finally answering some questions and picking up the pace it ended. It ended in an end-for-now but still kind of cliffhanger-ish. It was creepy I'll tell you that much. I'm not sure if I'll pick up the next novel in this trilogy.

My Favorite Quotes:

"It hurts to be around life. People don't understand how close death is, right over their shoulders, around the block, at the end of a street. It's everywhere and I'm the only one who knows where it is."

"My whole life doesn't make sense. It's like I'm always one step away from walking off a cliff."

"Everyone fears death, Ember. Even death itself."

I have to admit, even when I reached the end of the book, I felt slightly confused. Perhaps it's me. Or it could be that there was just too much information cramped towards the end of the book that I couldn't quite absorb it.

So, there's Ember - who can sense how people will die when she touches them.
There's Asher - mysterious boy who rescued her from drowning.
There's Cameron - another mysterious boy who she bumped into at the cemetary.

One of them's an Angel, the other is a reaper and yet another is The Grim Reaper.

Naturally, Ember is the person in the middle of the paranormal tug of war. And she doesn't seem like someone who would be able to make a wise decision as she seems all over the place, emotionally. And it seems that she could probably go insane.

There's also Raven, her best friend who most of the time doesn't act like her best friend. I doubt Ember can rely on Raven to help her make a wise decision. Nope.

The ending was unexpected, almost anti-climatic. Not really sure if I'm gonna go read the next book in the series.

I am confused, dumbfounded and breathless.
This was one hell of a story. Creative, dark, emotional.

Ember, a girl that can see people's death by touching them has her life thrown upside down when two boys come into her life, Asher and Cameron. Things get confusing and dangerous as she realizes that things are not what they seem.

This was a gripping tale. Absolutely addictive. There was just no way of knowing what will happen next. Jessica Sorenson kept the suspense level on life-threatening high throughout the whole book.
As I reader I did not know who is good or who is bad, who is hiding what.
I did like Ember's character from the beginning, did not like her friend Raven whatsoever, which had proven to be somewhat correct. But with Asher and Cameron, I felt slightly schizophrenic. One moment I was on team Asher, the next moment on team Cameron.

I hope there will be another book to find out what team Ember is going to end up on and how.

I really enjoyed this book. Once again, the plot was unique and the characters were interesting (except Raven, I couldn't stand her).

Ember is the main character and she has an interesting ability. She can see a person's death if touched by them. Because of this curse, Ember chose to steer clear of people in general (who can blame her)! She grew up without a father (disappeared) and a drug addict mother who blamed her for it.

Things got interesting when two handsome men showed up in town - Asher and Cameron. Suddenly, the story’s momentum accelerated... Ember had to choose between two men she found attractive, search for the truth in her past and battle between the good and evil that lies inside her.

It was a page turner for sure! Kudos Jessica! Well written story with just enough passion and mystery to keep me hooked!

I really struggled with this one and I'm really surprised. I had high expectations for this book since I loved The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden AND The Secret of Ella and Micha. I was disappointed and left wanting more.

Don't get me wrong, the idea of touching someone and being able to see their death is crazy interesting. I actually would have liked more detail every time this happened. You know, something more than just brief flashes. Maybe some sort of painful feelings tied to them as well. Just more. Well, with this little inconvinience, I understand why she doesn't like to be around many people. And yet, she goes to parties and has close friends, all that stuff that gets you touched.

description

Also, this book is supposed to be the New Adult adaptation of Ember. Uhm, no. replacing the word "high school" with "college" does not make the book instantly a college based book. I actually had to revert back to thinking of these characters in high school just to relate to it. The climax starts with a school Halloween dance... hm. Don't get me wrong, there are some steamy scenes that made this not fall into the Young-Adult category either, but I am a passionate believer that there is more to the New Adult category.

description

The plot was kind of obvious and nothing really surprised me. The foreshadowing wasn't subtle and was really easy to pick up on. No "a-ha" moments. The plot twist? Color me not surprised. In fact, I felt myself going "just get on with it already." By the way, who wants to hold off on knowing the answers to their questions until they're ready? Not me. If there is something you know that will ease my pain, you need to spill your guts right. Now. Or I will.

Overall, you could tell that this book was patched together to try and create the New Adult setting. It was just too choppy for me to believe. I was going to give this 2 stars because I still love the author, but then I realized while writing this review that I couldn't find any redeeming qualities to the book itself. I'm sorry. Maybe the original Ember would go over better.

Ember was a creative story. I really liked the idea of the usual battle between “good” and “evil” being applied to Angels of Death and Grim Reapers and all other ramifications and decisions catapulted by this battle. The book was easy to read and the pace was neither fast nor slow, which fit this story perfectly. It also did a good job at keeping you guessing who was who/what in it. There were a few times when I didn’t know myself and that doesn’t happen frequently. This doesn’t mean the book was completely unpredictable.

Ember’s family life really sucked and it’s a real accomplishment that she wasn’t already insane by the time the whole major “event” happened. To make matters worse, she has the flakiest best friend a girl could have. I intensely disliked Raven and that is the nicest way to “say” it I can come up with right now. Can she quietly disappear in the second book? Pretty please? I’m sure Ember will get over it soon after. Although, some of her actions (Raven’s) did make sense towards the end of the book. But yeah, I still do not like her. Also, I thought Raven and Ember’s lifelines were too parallel. I won’t say too much, but I found it a bit weird that it was so similar, almost identical. And they even have flower names (Rose & Lilly) as their middle names. I raised my eyebrow at that. I’m hoping all this parallelism in their lives has an important reason to be in the book.

There was some…romance?...in the book. Okay, it was more like lusty insta-love times two, but in a way it did make sense why it was like that and what the pull was, but I’m still not a fan of it. I did like the guys, Asher and Cameron, and that is also something that doesn’t happen often, since I also dislike the dreaded triangles of death. I wanted her to pick them both. Though, I am a little mad at Asher. It was definitely the wrong time to break the rules when he decided to do it. He needed to let things take their course. He knows what horrible thing he did…

I’m sort of at a crossroads with this book. I did enjoy the book, but I have this lingering feeling that something really important was missing and I can’t really tell what it was. Maybe the feeling will go away when I read the second book. I will continue with the series because I did like the story and do want to know how the story will continue to develop and grow.

*I received an e-copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review which is part of my stop in the Ember Blog Tour.

“Grim Angels – half Grim Reaper, half Angel of Death”

Jessica Sorensen never lets me down with any of her books. She is always able to take me away to another world and suck me in!!

Ember is able to see every person’s death when she touches them so it’s hard for her to be an outgoing person and be surrounded by other people. Ember’s father disappeared when she was younger and she was blamed for it. Her life has never really been easy due to her “curse” but she doesn’t let what other thinks about her bring her down. Her mom calls her crazy and her brother sort of checked out for a little bit after his girlfriend died. Her best friend, Raven knows about her ability and still tries to keep Ember out and about in the world of the living.

“Open your eyes,” a deep voice demands. “Come on, not yet. Open you eyes, God dammit.” The whisper alters to a desperate plea. “Please, Ember…Please, wake up…You have to be on of them - I know you are.”

Two new boys come in to town , Asher and Cameron. They both bring her two different feelings when they touch her, however she is not able to see their deaths like everyone else. She has never had a boyfriend before because touching someone else is too painful for her to deal with. But when they both touch her, one brings her beautiful silence and the other brings her crazy silence. She has no idea what is going on but things start happening in her town and everyone points fingers at her again. She sort of finds herself in a love triangle, but not in ways you are thinking – it’s slightly different.

One of the poems from the book:

“In separate fields of black feather, the birds fly. Four wings, two hearts, but only one soul. They connect in the middle, but are separated by a thin line of ash. It’s what brings them together, yet rips their feathers apart. They can never truly be together as light and dark. Unless one makes the ultimate sacrifice, blows out their candle, and joins the other in the dark.”

You will feel everything that Ember goes through – pain, suffering, hatred, confusion, love, lust, jealousy – the list is endless. As Ember learns about angels, grim reapers, death and what they all mean, she begins to wonder about her past and what really happened to her father. Ember has to make a decision that will change not only how her life but the lives of everyone else.

I love this world that Jessica has created. A very well written story with a great plot!! And the ending will have you left wanting more!!!

Highly recommended!!!

4 Solid-Stars

I've to say at the beginning I was very skeptical about this book; the cover didn't attrack me and the story seemed a repeated one. But I gave it a chance because I really like Jessica Sorensen writing style- a lot, and I'm so glad that I've read it. That book was fantanstic!!!

Let me start by clarifying that it wasn't my first book about death or that a young girl/adult was drawn to death; but I never expected such a great plot as in Ember.

The story line was originally and the details, just wow, I was stunned, literally! I enjoyed reading the history about Dark Angels, Grim Angels and the Reaper. It hooked me and not ones did I think the story was boring. Jessica uses a lot of emotional appeals and hooks her readers totally-loved it!

Poor Ember sees the death of ppl since she's 4yrs old. She avoids crowded places and the only place where she finds peace is at the cemetery. One night she watched two grave robbers; that's the night where she sees the first time Cameron. Soon after that, mysteriously Cameron moves just few houses next to Ember, claiming they just moved here from NYC.

Cameron is attractive and has a charm of his own. He isn't the only guy who messes with poor Ember's mind and heart. Another new kid moves to the small town- Asher. Asher was her rescue,he saved her in the night when she ran her Dad's car off the cliff and crashed into the lake.Since that night, Ember feels drawn to him, especially after realizing the she can't see his death omen when they touch. Instead, Ember feels calmness when Asher is around.

Both guys are determined to win Ember's heart, for their own reason-both hide a secret which Ember has no clue about. While she tries to figur things out for herself, a murderer kills off people and all leads to Ember. Since her father mysteriously died/disappeared, the police and the towns citizen have a special eye on her.

Soon Ember puts piece by piece the puzzle together and she realizes who she is and what Cameron and Asher are after.

I can't wait for book two :)!!! It was pure bliss to read it.

This was a horrible book to start off the new year with.

The plot was weak and convoluted. There wasn't any substance or movement to keep the book intriguing at all and the characters were horribly written.

I couldn't decide if Ember was supposed to be written as strong or depressed and weak?!?!? Her personality leaps around a bit too much to make a solid character. Even when she made up her mind that she didn't want to do something, she couldn't follow through with the decision. She was always coerced be her friend or family to do exactly what she didn't want.

Her friend, Raven, irritated the hell out of me. She definitely fits the profile of "who needs enemies with friends like these." She may have been possessed for part of the book but it doesn't excuse her being a terrible friend and failing to actually listen when she was in her right mind.

Every life and death situation or threat was followed by a sex scene which was just ridiculous! The state of mind and emotions that would likely follow life threatening scenes do not immediately include sex that obliterates any concern for what actually happened.

How am I supposed to take a story seriously when each time the heroine dies traumatically and is brought back to life, it's immediately followed by lust and sex? Seriously!?!?!? It's not normal, it's not believable, it silly!

And the whole love triangle in this story was equally stupid. Asher and Cameron and Ember. Geez, wither one of these guys touches her and Ember immediately succumbs- it was nauseating. I actually put the book down and left it a few times when this happened. Ember would literally have just made out with Ash and then go on a date with Cameron and let him feel her up...WTF!?!?!? And she didn't really know either of them! If you're gonna play around, at least know who the hell you're playing with!

Needless to say, this series is finished for me. I truly do not care about what happens or why. The whole book from characters to development were lacking in anything remotely captivating.

I am so glad to be apart of the Blog Tour for Ember because I have been super excited to read this book. It was a very quick read for me. It was a fast paced and an action packed kind of book. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read the second installment!

The thing that got me about this book was that it was about death. When I say death, I mean filled with death. You can't turn a page without there being some kind of reference to it. It was a very interesting thing. I liked Ember :) She was a different. She had a different mindset than anyone else because she's been able to see death since she was a child. Just from one touch, she can see how a person will die, whether it's painful or from old age. I also liked how we got to see Ember's family life. She did not have an easy one. The thing with her mom and brother was really sad to see. Also, Ember's best friend creeped me out at times. I must say she had more issues than Ember did in my eyes. She was to flip floppy with her emotions for me.

Now on to the boys, Asher and Cameron. Now the issue I have with the romance part of the story was that it was basically insta love, in a sense. I wasn't digging it. But I did like Asher over Cameron though. Cameron was really weird and would always show up when it was least expected. I suppose that's all I'm going to say on the that.

The ending was kind of confusing a bit. I'm really sad about the part with Asher and I really hope he makes an appearance in book 2! The part with her brother has my mind running wild. I'm still not entirely sure what happened. And what, again, happened to Raven?! I can't wait to read the sequel and I definitely recommend this book!

There were sooo many questions that came up while I was reading this book! I enjoyed the fresh story line about grim angels. The mystery of what they are, how they can upset the balance between the light & the dark & how they relate to Ember. I was confused at times at trying to guess who Asher & Cameron really were. Who's the reaper? Who's the angel? Then I was like, "please let so & so be the good guy!" What's up exactly with the feathers, the hourglass, the X marks? And how many times will Ember die & be taken into police custody? (Just some of the questions I had while reading.) I hope the next book will be here soon. I need more answers & more of those two boys again!

My highlights-
1. The hotness of both Asher & Cameron- Ember is drawn to both of them. Whomever is considered good or bad, they both have lethal seduction techniques.

My Lowlights-
1. The Poetry- Not that I don't like poetry or anything but some of it left my mind a little muddled at times. Felt like I REALLY had to read into it every now & then.
2. Raven- I know it's not all her fault or whatever but she still bugged me. Thank heavens she didn't sink her claws into Cameron or Asher.

Ember is a girl who can see a person's death with the just slightest touch and only her best friend Raven knows about her curse. Her world is turned even more upside down by the arrival of two irresistibly mysterious boys, Asher and Cameron. A dark and sexy twist on the old tale of Good vs Evil.

This is the first book I've read by Jessica Sorensen and I gotta say I'm impressed. Ember X is the more mature adult paranormal version of her previously released young adult book titled just Ember. This was a one shot read from start to finish for me. I just couldn't put it down. This story had a little bit of everything for me. It was dark, mysterious and a bit gothic, but at the same time playful, romantic and sexy with lots of twists and turns. Sorensen sure does have a way with words too. She paints beautifully poetic scenes that draw you in without going overboard. She had me loving, hating and second guessing all the characters at different times throughout the book. Nice little cliffhanger of an ending too. Can't wait for the next one!

She can see how you will die.
Ember has had to deal with the fear of touching people or she will see their death. If that isn't enough to send people running, the fact that she was a suspect in hers father disappearance does not help! Enter two new students. Both equally yummy in their own way, Ember doesn't see their death when they touch, in fact all she can hear in static. But with Asher she feels a since of peace in that static, more like a white noise. He's different and she soon finds out just how different both boys are. Someone's trying to kill her, others are disappearing around her, in the same strange way her dad did. Then there's the fact that's she's seeing things, none of this is normal, but Embers not normal. Ember is special, she just has to learn how special and what to do then.

2.5 stars. This was free on amazon, which was cool, but I don't know...I had trouble getting through this one. I've enjoyed all the other Jessica Sorensen books I've read so far, but I just didn't feel this one. There were parts that felt "off" to me; the way Raven acted and the way Ember responded (or didn't) was odd. The characters all seemed a bit flat to me. There was just no spark for me with this book.

This was good. I really feel like she is alone in this one. A very different storyline, good never the less. I liked the heroine. Asher was a little wishy washy to me. I knew Cameron was a wild card. Raven, I need for you to let her go. Mom, brother, wow. She has nobody. She is a sitting duck. Hopefully the next one will gear to her getting a few allies. This is a War she is bound to lose. Help!

I got this book while it was for free on Amazon, while I haven't been particularly impressed by this authors books (with the ones I've read) I thought this book has a lot of potential to be a really good story, it could use some editing and some plot hole filling as well as better character development but was alright. I look forward to reading revised versions of this book in the future.
