Margaret Hesketh MacFarlane MacAlpine (nee Murray) sister of the writer and environmentalist W.H. Murray was a graduate of Glasgow University, specialising in literature and French. After a love affair with the poet Brian Coffey, she started a life of literature, that included work editing poetry (especially Coffey's), working as a reader for Faber, and eventually publishing three children's books (one for each of her children) and writing under the pseudonym 'Ann Carmichael' for Friends magazine.
