From Tom Wright's meditation on Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the 'Prayer is one of life's great mysteries. Most people pray at least sometimes; some people, in many very different religious traditions, pray a great deal. At its lowest, prayer is shouting into a void on the off-chance there may be someone out there listening. At its highest, prayer merges into love, as the presence of God becomes so real that we pass beyond words and into a sense of his reality, generosity, delight and grace. For most Christians, most of the time, it takes place somewhere in between those two extremes. To be frank, for many people it is not just a mystery but a puzzle. They know they ought to do it but they aren't quite sure how'
Tom Wright delivers nuggets of wisdom and insights into our need for prayer in this compilation of entries on prayer littered across his 'For Everyone' series. It's devotional and part apologetic. It is gentle on the mind and a welcome salve for the soul. I'm beginning to like Tom's series as it's helping to bring me back into line with prayer, an indispensable activity for all children of God.
It's bringing to mind these two verses:
Matthew 7:7 - Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Acts 4:29-30: Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.
A rousing book for any stage of life. He weaves in his own life experiences which makes the book that much more readable and relatable.
