Mathematics for Elementary Teachers with Activities

Rate this book
An inquiry-based approach to this course allows future teachers to learn through exploration and group work, leading to a deeper understanding of mathematics. Known for her contributions in math education, Sybilla Beckmann writes the leading text for this approach. In Mathematics for Elementary Teachers with Activities, students engage, explore, discuss, and ultimately reach a true understanding of mathematics. The Fourth Edition provides a new full-color design, making the math come alive. For the first time, the content and activities are combined into the same text, creating a self-contained resource for this course and beyond. Common Core State Standards are integrated to complement the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Focal Points and Standards that appear where appropriate. New "From the Field" features highlight the latest research, "Integrating Mathematics and Pedagogy" (IMAP) videos (available separately), children's literature, views from the classroom, and lesson planning to prepare future teachers for their teaching careers.

Counting this towards my reading challenge as an ego-boost to myself; in all honesty a lot of me "reading" this book was just me looking at the pictures. I guess I would say this book is good, since it taught me math for my wildly expensive online math course. Indeed, I wish I had simply bought the book and read (or looked at the pictures in) it, rather than paid for the entire course, which was formatted along the lines of "read this book, do the exercises in it, and then complete online assignments and quizzes based on what you learned in the book, for a grade" (there was a prof but he did not interact with us and in fact I do not know how to pronounce his last name). So, in short, if you read this book cover to cover and do some of the exercises, you will learn just as much math as a very expensive course at an accredited university, and for much, much cheaper.

I read this for my math class this semester (yes, I read the whole thing). It was helpful with some topics, but not all. It gave very brief descriptions, but had lots of good activities!
