Meet Atticus Grammatticus Cattypus Claw, the world's greatest cat burglar. He's a tabby who spells trouble. And he's been hired by the fiendish Jimmy Magpie to steal all the jewels in Littleton-on-Sea.
Atticus needs a temporary home - preferably one with lots of sardines provided. But when he adopts Inspector Cheddar and his family, Atticus starts to wonder, is a life of crime really for him?
Jennifer Gray has been writing children's comedy for a couple of years. She is also a Barrister and she knows how to spot a cat burglar when she sees one, especially when he's a large tabby with a chewed ear and a handkerchief round his neck that says Atticus Claw. Jennifer's other books for children include Guinea Pigs On Line, co-written with Amanda Swift and published by Quercus. Jennifer lives in London and Scotland with her husband and four children, and of course Henry, a friendly but enigmatic cat.
This book is so cute, fun and hilarious!! The second half of the book was my favourite, I couldn't stop laughing. And god, have you seen Atticus on the cover? I keep on peeking because damn, I want to rub that belly so much. EEEPPP!!!
I LOVE THIS FLUFFY CAT READ. LOL. THANKS TO YOU, YES YOU. ;)
One of the aspects of my job that I love is running kids literary events. Once a month we run a kids book club, aimed at primary aged children in an attempt to engage with and widen their reading experiences. In January my colleague and I ran the book club based on the Atticus Claw series. I hadn't read any, so thought I should have a go at least one! Atticus is a pretty cool cat. He goes from a life of crime and loneliness to being a crime fighter with a family. The villains, in the form of some dastardly magpies are brilliant. I love the fact Gray has created a world where it is perfectly acceptable to arrest animals for crimes. There is a lot of pulp out for kids at the moment. Mass produced mega series (think Rainbow Fairies or Zac Powers) which do have their place. I do truly believe that any reading is good reading for kids, but it is really nice to come across something that I think will have mass appeal to kids and is well written. I'm not sure I'll read any more of Attius Grammatticus Cattypus Claw's adventures - I'm not really a cat person - but they have definitely been added to my list of suggestions for when library patrons ask what's a good thing for my child to read!
This was chosen to read for the "your name" theme at the library book café.
There was quite a bit to like in this story of an actual cat burglar, a gang of magpies and the family of the local police officer. There's quite a nice theme of not fitting in, and not really wanting to fit and then changing. Some fast paced and ludicrous scenes to enjoy. Overall though it didn't quite satisfy - as the opener in a series it felt as though we were starting in the wrong place and it wasn't easy to understand how Atticus Claw comes to be who and where he is.
The misunderstanding about the motivations of police work is a good one.
The revenge of the magpies didn't quite work - yes, they like shiny things but they are avenging the deaths of fellow magpies (and their feelings about these are well conveyed). Perhaps Gray wanted to keep it light but magpies (even if you're not one of that rather odd anti-raptor anti-corvid Songbird Survival outfit) are capable of worse than nicking jewellery, and the marvellous scene where they gather en masse really only works if you discount the danger to the tiara and think of darker things.
I liked the characters of Mr and Mrs Tucker I could imagine them sadly not Callie or Michael which I would have liked. Looking forward to reading the following books in the series as I'd like to feel more of a connection with the characters which I didn't in this first book.
3.5 This was kinda cute, my son wouldn't read it because there were no pictures, but it was a fun story. I didn't exactly think it unusual that the police inspector didn't believe the kid's story about magpies stealing the jewels. It would've been a bit strange if he had believed it.
Cute little book about adventures of one of the best cat-burglars in the world, Atticus Claw. My son and I read it out loud and thoroughly enjoyed it - we had quite a few good chuckles.
Atticus Claw Breaks the Law by Jennifer Gray is a story about a couple of criminal masterminds that belong to the animal world, a cop who’s desperate to get a promotion and a couple of kids who would do anything to shed light on a mystery.
The first thought that crossed my mind when I saw this book was: this sounds fun. And it is fun. But, it’s also thought provoking, deeply human and, unavoidably, feline.
Meet Atticus Grammaticus Cattypuss Claw, a cat unlike any other. Atticus is a thief and a cosmopolitan, somebody who likes to live as a prince. At the beginning of the story we find him living the big life in Monte Carlo, but before that he’s been to Moscow and Milan, Montreal, Miami and Madrid. He’s been all over the world.
He doesn’t need anyone, but apparently someone needs him. Thus he receives a message, delivered by a pigeon, that summons him to the small English town of Littleton-on-Sea, for a job. The message ends like this: “It will be worth your while.”
So he shoos the pigeon away and then hops on a train that takes him to the northern coasts of France from where he sails to England. He hitches another couple of rides and to Littleton-on-Sea he arrives, where he meets the customers, a gang of magpies. Jimmy is the leader of the pack.
He’s curious about Jimmy’s motives, as he’s kind of a shadowy character, but it’s not just his curiosity that makes him take the deal, it’s the reward as well: six sardines for each item he steals. What more can a cat ask for? A home, of course. So he sets off to find a family to adopt. And soon enough he finds his targets; a couple of kids, a boy and a girl, walking with their nanny home.
What he doesn’t know though is that they are the Cheddars, the kids of a police inspector. When he finds out though he’s more than happy to remain exactly where he is, since he thinks: “…where better to hide from the law than right under its nose?”
Sooner rather than later he gets to work. And the first job is way too easy for someone as talented as him: “Humans would call it a piece of cake. He called it a piece of stake.”
Well, Atticus feels happy at first in his new home, as well as with the working conditions. The kids and their mom love him, and so does the nanny; the inspector not so much but that’s okay. And the sleepy little town is not that boring after all. The people are kind of strange, but so what? People are strange everywhere.
Soon enough though things will begin to change, as he’ll start to have feelings for the kids, and he’ll also meet a lovely lady that will bring his romantic self to life. And at the same time he’ll start having trouble with his employers. They simply make him mad. And they’re stupid. Well, most of them are, apart from Jimmy; he’s not only clever but also dangerous; he can smell it.
But what is a cat to do? The truth is that he can, and he’ll do a lot, and then some more; and he’ll have the biggest adventure of his life, during which quite a few things will change in his psyche.
In this book we have all the ingredients of a great story: stupid cops and brilliant villains; feelings of pure love and deep hatred; many twists and turns and a grand finale that can take the cat’s, (sorry, I mean the reader’s), breath away.
Atticus Grammaticus Cattypuss Claw is a well-established, and quite possibly the best, cat burglar in the world. One day, whilst chilling in Monte Carlo, he is rudely interrupted by an edgy pigeon with a message. Atticus is offered a big burglary job in the town of Littleton-on-Sea by as of yet unknown employers. Little does he know that this will lead to Atticus readdressing his profession, becoming a part of the Cheddar family and being framed by some spiteful, yet dim, magpies hell bent on collecting a whole hoard of shiny things.
Incredibly well written, I found myself enjoying this in spite of myself. The dialogue is hilarious in places and Atticus is a brilliantly imagined moggy whose heart is bigger than we are first led to believe. I loved the characterisation of the magpies, they make for perfect bumbling crooks with a deliciously evil streak.
The story itself will have you hooked as well; there is, thankfully, no waiting around for things to happen. The narrative is pacey with no instances of pointless filler text. It will sweep you along and before you know it you will have reached the end of the novel desperately wanting to read more about the most famous cat burglar in the world, Atticus Claw.
This is perfect for both boys and girls, and will make bedtime stories all the more exciting for grown-ups. A wonderful new novel for the 5-8 year old market, I can’t wait for the next one!
This is a fantastic book for all the family, its full of fun and excitment and the kids couldnt wait to hear what would happen next.
Atticus Grammaticus Cattypuss Claw is a "cat" burglar. He receives a message to go to Littleton-on-Sea to meet with the person wishing to hire him. So he sets off to England to meet with this mysterious boss. When he gets there he meets Jimmy the boss who is a magpie. Yes I know a magpie hiring a cat to steal for him. Strange but the adventure just gets going at this point. As we get to go with Atticus on his various exploits to steal all the shiny things from the humans.
This story is wonderful because we get to see Atticus trying to decide if a life of crime is truly what he wants. I won't give away the story but the lesson he learns is a very good one that family is important...
I HIGHLY recommend this book to parents and children alike. Any age from the youngest toddler being read to or the oldest adult doing the reading will enjoy this story with the twists and turns and the crazy antics of Atticus, the Magpies, the children and the police its a fabulous story for all.
I read this to my 7 year old son. I think maybe he needed to be a little older, but he did enjoy it. I only say he needed to be older because it didn't hold his attention completely like some shorter books do and we kept having to come back to it after a few days off. However, he did like the story. I think it was well written, not a classic, but not hard for a parent to read either. The kids will love the different animal characters. My son was particularly fascinated by the villains of the book. The villains were cleverly done and not your usual bad guys. My son gives it a thumbs up and he's looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
I loved this book. I thought it was pretty much the perfect MG novel. I loved that the animals had their own world and talked to each other (but the humans couldn't hear). And the set up was perfect - first we meet Atticus, then the baddy magpies and then the hapless Cheddar family - and then they are all brought together in a tale that is funny, warm and pacey. I liked that Atticus was presented with a moral dilemma - the greedy life of the cat burglar he has always known or the love of a good family. No prizes for guessing which way he jumped. Also a great example of a set-up novel (ie. book one) in a series.
This was a delightful tale and one I'd recommend for children and the young at heart. I fell in love with Atticus Grammatticus Cattypus Claw from his first appearance. The book had me it stitches, especially the magpies who seemed to get the best lines.
I didn't know people were still writing this kind of charming fantasy. Will certainly be looking out for more in the series even if I have to sneak into the Children's Section of the library to do so.
Atticus claw breaks the law by Jennifer Gray. Atticus claw breaks the law is about a tabby cat who is always spelling trouble. Atticus has been hired by a magpie gang to steel from the magpies enemies the humans. When Atticus finds a nice family is a life of crime really for him cause Atticus doesn't want to be a prison cat. This book is mostly for 6-10 year old boys and I would give it a 10/10 rating.
Atticus Claw. The worlds greatest cat burglar. The coolest feline on the block. Atticus Claw breaks the Law is an amazing, humorous novel written by Jennifer Gray. It is about a cat gang who have been hired by the malicious magpies to steal a handful of precious jewels from Littleton-on-Sea, however they suddenly betray him. Will Atticus be able to get his name cleared? Read this extraordinary book to find out…
