A bumper collection of Ireland's favorite legends for children. Included The Children of Lir , The Brown Bull of Cooley , Deirdre of the Sorrows , The Salmon of Knowledge and a host of other legends of Oisin , Setanta, Fionn and the heroes of Irish mythology.
I bought this book as a gift and decided to read a few stories out of curiosity. I was shocked when I realized it wasn’t suitable for children—I was about to give it to a friend for her kids! Even though I was disappointed, I kept reading and finished the book, and now I’m glad I did so.
Irish mythology is my favourite, it is so magical and meaningful! I’ll keep this book for myself, and I just discovered a children’s version, so I’ll get that for my friend’s kids instead.
I should start this review by saying this book was given to me as an incredibly thoughtful gift by someone who knows my love of myths, legends, and fairytales. It is a beautifully illustrated collection of Irish stories including the classics of Fionn Mac Cumhall, Cu Chulainn, and the Children of Lir, many fairytales (though they should really be called Leprechaun-tales), some fables, and even a bit of history with the story of Granuaile. Each one was told simply but full of emotion. And I already mentioned the illustrations, but I will mention them again: they are a delight, and as an added bonus, all done by women illustrators. Overall, this was a truly enjoyable read and a book I will always treasure.
I love the beautiful artwork and the stories! They could have been written better but they're still lovely. I bought this book a few years ago in Cork City Gaol and I'm happy to own it.
