This is a great suspense thriller by a writer that has just recently come onto my radar. I am now intrigued enough by her writing that I'm going to find some of her previous releases.
The Missing is incredibly twisty--just when you think you have it figured out I guarantee that you are wrong! I probably should have paid closer attention while I was reading and I might have picked up on a few things, but I didn't so I was happily surprised.
It's told from the point of view of Katy, a woman on vacation and spending most of her time reading by the pool because her husband is always working. She's offered a spot for free on a boat tour, and a few hours later, claiming engine problems and promising to return, the boat drops Katy and four other passengers off on an island. It soon becomes apparent that they are indeed stranded and things are not as they seem. A note appears stating that until only one of them is left alive, they will all remain on the island. And there are strange things happening right and left--who is behind what is happening and why?
I read quite a few thrillers and this one stands out for its inventiveness. I can see this as a Netflix movie, it has all of the gripping elements. If you like psychological thrillers, definitely pick this one up.

There you are sipping your drink, reading your kindle, stretched out on an idyllic beach in Key West, when asked if you'd like a free boat/yacht ride with free drinks and food? With your husband working from the hotel room, leaving you alone, yet again... Why not? Sounds good, doesn't it?
What can I say, Kiersten Modglin has done it again! Another edge of your seat, suspenseful, fast paced, fun read! Filled with bone chilling intensity, mounting palpable tension, and unrelenting twists and turns, The Missing had me up till 4 am, racing to the finish.
Both thrilling and heart breaking, The Missing has plenty to contemplate. With morality, friendship and the basic meaning of humanity crashing and colliding with the tender and tenuous thread of mere survival, it will have your head spinning.
"Sometimes we know the truth about the people we love; we know the truth in our bones and in the fiber of our being, but we can’t admit it, not even to ourselves. That's it? Such an unimpressive climax to a very interesting plot and characters. I was left with more questions than I can count.
An isolated island? With strangers? What would you do to survive? Would you kill for a chance to go back home? Or accept this island life forever?
Intense setting for a group of people who know nothing about each other. Characters you will love and hate and a villain so evil you would want to get even.
Noah, oh Noah. A fellow Filipino. One of the reasons why I kept reading albeit the unanswered questions, plot holes and confusing POVs.
If you want a simple thriller and you don't mind suspending a few of your beliefs or a Hallmark movie ending, go ahead and dive in.

I loved this crazy ride of a story!!! A little bit like the tv show Lost or Survivor, but also Hunger Games for adults.
I read this story at breakneck speed. My theories wildly fluctuated depending on the chapter and now that it’s all over, I feel like I need to re-read this book at a normal pace to better understand all of these characters.

Recently I've been seeing a lot of reviews for Kiersten Modglin's books and since The Missing was free with my Kindle Unlimited membership and I had downloaded it a while back, I started reading it one night when our tv was on the fritz.
Katy is vacationing with her husband in Florida when she is approached by a young man asking whether she'd be interested in a free boat tour. The boat is actually a yacht and since her husband is spending most of their vacation working, she decides to take the offer. After a few hours the boat experiences some type of trouble and Katy and the other four passengers are dumped on an uninhabited island with nothing to eat or drink and no explanation.
From there on, things get pretty intense at times as strange things start to happen. All the while, the five people, none of whom knew each other previously, are trying to determine who could've engineered the circumstances that brought them together. This book reminded me a bit of Stranded except those people knew why they were on the island and had some tools and supplies to aid them in carving out an existence. Parts of this story were hard to believe, or maybe it's just that the details weren't explained, but it was an enjoyable quick read with quite a surprise at the end. 3.5 Stars!
Ms. Modglin seems to be a prolific author and I'll definitely read some of her other titles, some of which appeal to me and some which don't.

Modglin does it again. A fast-paced thriller, original and interesting. There were some things that wasn’t completely top notch, for example how they managed to make a fire, but overall this was a very enjoyable read and I loved the dark, twisty dive into the darkest corners of our minds.

Oh jeez, where to start? The plot holes could hold a universe. The characters are shallow. The grocery store sushi of thrillers, effective but so not worth it…for me.
To be fair, if you’re looking for something twisty and quick, and you don’t need it to fully make sense or have fleshed out characters, this is for you. I understand why some people love her books, but between this and The Arrangement, they are not for me.

This was a fun and twisting story full of suspense and adventure. Some of the turns I could see coming but others did take my by surprise. The writing flowed and the story was hard for me to put down. The characters were well developed and even when they weren’t exactly like able they were compelling. What would you do if you were trapped on an island for 4 strangers and told that only one of you could leave, the last one alive. That is what happens to poor Katy after she agrees to a free boat ride that ends with her being stranded on a desert island. While I am currently desperate for a real vacation and would love to go to the beach this book made that desperation fade a little for a bit.

I thought Katy was also the woman who did the wedding con. I totally missed the part where a different character named Miss Sheridan entered the pictured. They were both written in the first person so I thought it was only one character.
Imagine my surprise when Katy gets a call from the cops to identify the con woman. I couldn’t understand why she would show up for that meeting. And when Miss Sheridan acted so chipper telling Katy she was the “winner” it was too far fetched to suspend my normal system of disbeliefs. I had to go back to the beginning to reread what I missed. The chapters could have been titled better or I need to read slower. I feel like a dope.
I don’t think the characters were developed enough to get me to believe they would bond so quickly. I really didn’t buy that happily ever after ending either. Really disappointed in this book after enjoying all of the other books I’ve read by this author.

This was an Audible deal of the day a few days ago. I had low expectations. They were not met.
This book claims to be one of those puzzle-box mysteries where strangers with dark secrets are thrown together. In most of these, the fun of them comes from a steady drip-feed of plot twists as the body count rises. Usually, characters have to figure out what the connection between them is, and who they can trust. In this case, five of them are dropped on an island and told they’ll have to kill each other to get off.
Only, they don’t try to kill each other, and they don’t try to figure out each other’s secrets or the connection between them. They just look for coconuts and fret about getting rescued. For weeks. This is the first huge problem: in a book about five strangers with dark secrets having to murder each other on a deserted island, the details of how they find enough coconuts to eat are the most boring part. But for 75% of the book, that’s all that happens.
When finally real plot twists start to pop up, they hinge on these strangers trusting each other, and being good friends. This is mystifying. If they needed to be good friends, just start the premise with a group of friends, don’t waste more than half the book establishing relationships that still feel hollow and flimsy, despite the overworked histrionics of the main character.
Here’s a specific example of how this all goes wrong.

This was a mess.
I can’t really go into too much detail in why this book sucked due to spoiling. The “twist” in this book was poorly executed. One of my favorite types of twists, but it didn’t work in this case. The note. No explanation on it, so why even put it in the book. I’m not going to google and hunt down an explanation that the author posted on a site somewhere. Poor planning.
The character development was poor.
The entire time we had the main character crying over her husband and how she missed him and this that and the other… but then the ending?! Make it make sense Jesus. 🙄

I.DONT.EVEN.KNOW.WHAT. TO.SAY.
So, I have been "missing " on an island all day...and I just got home.I'm sitting here after power reading this book and I don't know where to begin....because once again Kiersten has written a book that NO ONE will anticipate or see coming and believe me when I say this.... NO ONE!
This book is unlike any book she has written before, yet so familiar with the signature crazy twists and unbelievable situations she is known for...you will in no way anticipate or comprehend what is happening until you read the very last page. This book, I mean seriously still speechless after reading the last page, and then reading it again... because it was honestly that crazy good! Thanks Kiersten for blowing my mind yet again with your most recent book, I will be waiting impatiently as ALWAYS until you boggle my mind again with my next favorite book that you will write, because you always do!

the ending didn’t satisfy me
I am not a fan of suspense thrillers. But I did read this one for book club and I was hoping to at least have the end justify the duplicity. I liked the beginning with a neglected wife going on a yacht for an adventure while her husband worked. But I guess I was confused because the whole story had little character development.
The only good thing was the development of the relationship with Noah. The rest was forgettable

why was there so much romance in this?

What a fun thriller! A lot of insufferable characters. Survivor mentality. One of those late night page turners that you have to finish. Had a great time with this one!

It should have been an idyllic vacation...a beach, the sun, a cabana, but when your husband is a workaholic, holed up in the hotel room, and you're left to your own devices, you find yourself saying yes to things that you normally wouldn't. Like when a stranger singles you out to ask, "Would you like a free boat ride?" The "boat" is actually a yacht, and there is zero chance of having your husband join you, so you say yes, partly out of boredom, partly to live a little, and partly in the hopes that your workaholic husband will come down to live a little and find you gone. It would serve him right to worry a little, right?
He's going to be more than a little worried.
The boat ride you've just accepted will be the beginning of the end. Five strangers, are all unceremoniously dumped on a secluded island under the guide of "boat problems," but as soon as the past passenger is on land, the boat disappears, leaving these five to fend for themselves.
What do they have in common? Why were they chosen? Is this a type of revenge?
Then the first note appears, and it's clear that this will be a fight to the death...there can be only one survivor. Let the games begin.
I don't think I've ever swiped pages SO quickly before on one of Kiersten's books! This one was high stakes, hugely plot driven, and with such a tense atmosphere, I was compelled to read until I got to the truth at the end. Publishes May 18th, and you do NOT want to miss this one!

MINI REVIEW: I really love Kiersten Modglin's novels. While this one isn't a favorite I love how she always has amazing twists within her stories that truly shock her readers! The ending of this one was EXCELLENT. If you enjoy deserted island thrillers then you should definitely check this one out!

Actual rating 2 stars based on the abrupt ending.
I enjoyed this for the most part but there was no real conclusion to the crime. I feel like Modglin has a lot of twisty interesting ideas but cannot deliver on them all the way.

Too much romance 😭 if you like that in your books, you wouldn’t be disappointed but this felt a lot less like a thriller to me. 2.5 stars.

What a fun, entertaining, engaging book with a terrific narrator. I appreciated the small cast of characters who were easily distinguishable. I’m going to have to read more of Modglin’s books.

One of the worst books I’ve read. It was like two or three different books combined into one. It was not cohesive and made no sense whatsoever. I can’t believe I wasted my time. I read the audiobook version and the narrator was so over-the-top that she sounded like an overly dramatic porn star. Beware of your wasted time.

The Missing is the second book I've read by this author, and I went into it with high expectations after reading The Arrangement. I'm disappointed to say that I didn't enjoy this story at all.
It feels like this book was written by a completely different person. There was a whole lot of telling and not enough show. It was rushed, confusing and unbelievable. Yes, The Arrangement was over the top but it was still captivating and a fun read.. and I read it in one night. This one, however, took me way too many days to read because I would read a few dozen pages and be sick of it and have to put it down. The second half of the book, I only read just because I was slightly curious how it ended up, but that was disappointing as well. By the time I got to the last handful of chapters, I was skimming.
I'm honestly not sure where to go from here. I've read one that I loved and one that I hated. I don't know which to trust. I'm not going to give up on her other books, but I sure hope I'm not disappointed again. It could go either way. I'll keep you posted.

Consistently fabulous author with consistently fabulous books. I know whenever I see a new Kiersten Modglin hit the shelves that I'm gonna be thrilled, chilled, and enjoy losing myself in a good book (...and check the locks several times!)
