Grace McKenna sits outside the café with her faithful dog Harvey at her feet, gazing over the sea at Portobello Beach. She sneaks Harvey a piece of sausage and he scoffs it happily. Life doesn’t get much better than this , she thinks, turning her face to the early morning sun. But in the shadowy corridors of nearby Castle Traprain, a remorseless killer is preparing to strike…
Edinburgh, Scotland. It’s been one thing after another for Detective Grace McKenna and her team at the fledgling Portobello Detective Agency, and she’s finally enjoying some peace as the leaves turn and autumn beckons. But when a wealthy local landowner contacts her about a case so sensitive he can’t even discuss it over the phone, Grace is instantly intrigued.
Russian collector Sacha Komorov lives out of the public eye, despite his immense wealth and marriage to a famous ex-prima ballerina. As Grace gazes at the ominous silhouette of his Scottish estate, Castle Traprain, with its high walls and thrusting turrets, a shiver runs down her spine. Komorov himself is just as forbidding as he discloses the disappearance of a priceless rose-diamond Fabergé egg from his collection. It's an inside job, and he needs Grace to uncover the traitor within his own household.
As Grace dives into the case, her team goes undercover at Castle Traprain to win the trust of the staff. But things take an unexpected turn when Komorov's beautiful and troubled wife, Katya, begs for Grace's help to catch a disturbing stalker. Are the two cases connected? And why does Katya want to keep her husband in the dark about hiring Grace?
The plot thickens when one of the potential suspects is found murdered in the Housekeeper's quarters . It seems this is no ordinary jewel thief. The killer lurking within Castle Traprain will do anything to achieve their ends and, as the tension mounts, Grace and her team find themselves ultimately becoming targets in an increasingly deadly game…
An unputdownable Scottish mystery that will have you turning the pages to find out what happens next, perfect for fans of Clare Chase, Faith Martin and Frances Evesham.
Ex-Detective Grace McKenna of Portabello Detective Agency in Edinburgh, was intrigued to receive a call from the owner of the Traprain Castle, Sacha Komorov, about something he told her needed to be discussed face to face. Heading to the Castle, Grace had no idea what was ahead of her and her team, nor the fact that a despicable murderer was poised to pounce. When Sacha informed Grace of a priceless Fabergé egg, a part of his collection, which had been stolen, she deduced it had to be an inside job. The security at the castle was high, but all staff and residents needed to be interviewed.
With Grace's youngest team member Hannah, in the castle as a waitress, and Grace as a supposed art expert, they worked their way into life in the castle. And it wasn't pleasant. The Russians who lived there - as well as Sacha, his wife Katya and brother Nikolai, plus the security enforcer, Viktor - then there was the housekeeper among others. Grace was gobsmacked - a little Russia in the middle of Scotland. But when the murders began and Grace herself was in danger, she wondered if she wasn't in over her head. Would they discover the killer before more were killed? Would the Fabergé egg be uncovered - or was that long gone?
Murder at Castle Traprain is the 2nd in the Detective Grace McKenna Scottish Murder Mystery series by Jackie Baldwin and it was just as tense and fast paced as the first episode! Grace is a strong, determined character, but does go a little too far with her safety! And her team back her (almost) completely! I'm really enjoying this series and hope there are many more to come. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Murder at Castle Traprain was an interesting read. It takes place in Portpbello Beach in Scotland. Grace McKenna is the main character who owns Portebello Detective Agency along with her staff Jean and Hannah and her ex DS Brodie. Sacha Komorov, a Russian who owns Castle Traprain wants to hire Grace to find who has stolen his valuable faberge egg, His household consists of his wife, Katya. his housekeeper, Irina Petrova, Viktor Levitsky, his security guard; his brother, Nikolai Komorov and curator of his collection, Oliver Compton-Ross.
Grace meets with Sacha and it is decided that Hannah would be hired to work in his castle. His wife, Katya was a famous ballet dancer who was injured while dancing in the Russian ballet. Sacha has built her a dance studio in the castle as she still loves to dance. Katya also hires Grace to find out who has been stalking her all these years..
Sacha wants Grace to come to his dinner party and also meet his neighbor, Harris Hamilton and his wife, Hillary. At the party Hannah finds Irina Petrova dead in her bedroom. Irina had just found out that she is Sacha and Nikolia's half sister. Polly Gray is a maid that helps Hannah with her job and later is also killed by stangulation. The third death is Katya's lover, Igor Sokolov.
While trying to find out who killed these people strange things are going on. There is too much to put on paper that takes the reader on an exciting adventure to find out who was killer these people to the exciting and unexpected ending. I don't want to tell too much so that the reader can enjoy all that is happening in the story. It does keep the reader guessing.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this ARC.
Couldn't put it down. The second book in the series and it was just as much as a page turner as the 1st. I thought I'd solved it and then it changed direction and then a 360 again. Murder, mystery and Russian spies what's not to love. But the ending! I think my heart broke just a little. I thought it was going to happen but hoped it wouldn't. I got so lost In the story I forgot they weren't real people
I loved this cozy mystery. I was captivated from the start. While it would be classified as a cozy mystery, it had a greater level of depth than a cozy, intricate characters, and tons of moving pieces which set it apart from others in this genre. There is more than one mystery being solved simultaneously , and trying to figure out if and how they are connected was not easy, and had me guessing the whole time. Truly enjoyed this story, and cannot wait for the next. Highly recommend. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
When Grace McKenna is called to Castle Traprain to investigate the theft of a Faberge egg she is surprised to find that she has another client wanting help from the same household. The egg belongs to Sacha Komorov , a Russian now living in Scotland and his beautiful wife ex ballerina Katya, but Katya also wants Graces help to prevent her murder from a stalker. Then bodies start turning up. This book has so many twists and turns you won't see coming. I enjoyed the story and kept the pages turning. The story is well written which helps when there are so many suspects to keep track of.
I'm loving this cozy series and this is a good instalment: fun, solid mystery, well develped and likeable characters Can't wait to read the next one Recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Thank you to Love Book Tours team for sending me a copy of this to review but this will have no bearing on my over all views and thoughts.
Overall rating is 4.5 but rated down.
We follow Grace McKenna- former Scottish Police Detective of Portobello now full time Private Detective - as she's brought into a castle taken over by a wealth Russian millionaire and his people in a locked room mystery. A lost Fabergé egg that the millionaire had recently bought has gone missing in a room that was secured more than most high risk prisons- only things begin to escalate when a murder occurs and Grace also gets pulled into a dangerous stalker case from the Russian's former prima ballerina wife. With bodies and secrets starting to pile up Grace has to wonder are the all the cases linked?
I was after a cosy high stakes mystery set in the UK and this delivered! If you are from the UK I could compare this story to something like Midsummer Murders or a detective series inspired by Agatha Christie. It has humour, charming characters and a well written and intriguing mystery that if you love the shows like Midsummer murders you will love this.
I also love that the characters feel like people- we learn enough about them that they feel like real people living their lives out of the story and the current mystery without making it take center stage. The actual plot and mysteries that happen within the story are always the main driving force of this story.
The mystery is also written incredibly well- there's enough clues that you can follow along to the conclusion (which I won't be spoiling) or work out the who done it part as the story reaches it's conclusions- but not early enough that you're screaming at the protagonist to just get on with it.
Grace herself is an incredibly likeable protagonist. Both kind and warm hearted but has enough bite and toughness where needed as she takes charge in the situations she find herself in. Every action she takes you believe that she was a very good police detective before she was forced to quit, and while she shows a freedom to act that would have been limited in the red tape of being an officer there's also limits due to her not having the resources that the police does.
Bravo- a lot of PD stories I have read before completely miss that mark sometimes.
You don't need to read the previous book to get into the characters and story- the story has been written in a way that you can catch up without having to have an entire chapter to focus on backstories- there's enough there that any new reader can catch up but also some new stuff for fans of the series to gain.
I do have a few gripes- Grace's relationship with her ex husband Brodie was a meh for me. I didn't feel enough investment in them to fully believe the side story that as going on between them.
Also I don't know if it was just my copy but the way the texts were formatted in my Kindle version was god awful- I mean they were fully unreadable at times- so I think there needs to be a look by the editor to fix it as the format made it frustrating to read.
I was really enjoying myself with this one and it's such a wonderful surprise to find an author who can capture that cosy murder mystery essence of UK crime mystery shows. Jackie Baldwin and her Grace McKenna series is one I will be picking up again in the future.
My thoughts: this was my first Jackie Baldwin novel and I loved it! Scottish castle, jewels and a murder mystery—what’s not to love? This one was unputdownable! full of twists and turns & kept me guessing all the way to the end!

‘Murder at Castle Traprain’ is the brilliant follow-up in this series set in a private investigators in Portobello, Edinburgh! Although, this can be read as a standalone I would recommend reading the first book ‘Murder by the Seaside’ as it does gives you a feel for Grace and her background story! Plus, it's a brilliant book and worth the read!
Former DI Grace McKenna is feeling content in her life at the moment and is finding some peace as the season is on the turn. But when a wealthy Russian contacts her over a case so secretive he won't discuss over the phone, Grace’s interest is piqued. Russian collector Sacha Komorov lives at Castle Traprain with his wife, who is an ex prima ballerina from the Bolshoi. Sacha discloses that a priceless rose diamond Faberge egg has been stolen from the Castle and wants Grace to look into the disappearance and whether it could have been an inside job. Grace takes the case and Hannah is asked to work undercover as a maid. But when Katya, Sacha’s wife reveals to Grace that she has a stalker things begin to take a dramatic turn. Grace wonders whether the two cases could be connected and why Katya doesn't want her husband to know about her stalker. The plot thickens as one of the potential subjects is found murdered. Will Grace and the team be able to find the killer?
So I studied Russian history at university and I became a bit obsessed with Faberge and his eggs for the Imperial Family. They are just so evocative of the period and the standard of craftmanship is out of this world. Basically, what I'm saying is that I loved this element in the book! It was a brilliant read, it was well-researched, full of tension and it was fast-paced and packed full of action! Some people are placing this series into ‘cosy crime’ but I feel it's more than that. Yes, it has elements of that sub-genre but this book is slightly darker in its tone, more dangerous. There were sections in this book which I found to be really scary! Also, the characters are a bit more complex than those normally found in cosy crime, which I love. Yes, it has light-hearted sections and there is a cute dog but I think the sense of these books are outwith this sub-genre.
I love Grace, pure and simple. There has been great character development from the first book, where we find a grieving mother after the death of her son Cameron. We have been on the journey of recovery with her over the two books and I just could read about forever! She is a great protagonist and she really cares for her staff members, Jean and Hannah.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am already looking forward to reading book three! It's going to be an auto-read series for me and I think this series will have great success!
The backstory, fair warning I haven't read the first book in this series. Grace McKenna was a high-flying detective in the Edinburgh police force, until her son Connor's suicide sent her spiralling. Her marriage to Brodie, also a detective but far less driven, did not survive and he is now dating Julie, the (much younger) daughter of Grace's old Superintendent.
Now Grace runs a detective agency, assisted by her friend Jean and Connor's girlfriend Hannah who didn't have a chance to tell Connor she was pregnant before he died. Now Brodie, Grace and Jean help Hannah look after her toddler Jack.
Grace is called to Castle Traprain to investigate what appears to be a locked room mystery. The owner, Russian millionaire Sacha Komorov, has recently acquired an Imperial Faberge egg to give to his wife Katya, a former ballerina whose career was cut short when her dance partner dropped her. He hosted a dinner party for friends and neighbours to show them the egg, but when he took them down to the vault it was missing.
Shortly after accepting the assignment, and planting Hannah as a maid, Katya also approaches Grace, she has been receiving threatening letters and disturbing toys (fake Faberge eggs containing a toy ballerina with a broken leg etc).
Neither of the Komorovs wants to call in the police so Grace and her team must investigate alone, until the Russian housekeeper is found poisoned in her office.
As Brodie and Grace pursue their separate investigations they can't help but wonder if there is a link between them. But as the body count rises it seems they have a psychopath escalating out of control.
I thought the Russian angle was a bit over-egged with references to FSB, ballerinas, defecting, Faberge eggs etc. It felt a bit like the author had just thrown everything they knew that was Russian at the book. And yet strangely there was no attempt to create Russian accents/speech patterns or even Scottish ones which left me feeling that the book didn't really establish itself as being set in Scotland.
Overall, this was a pleasant read, there's a lot of backstory about Grace and Brodie which serves as an overarching story. Verdict? I'd read more in the series on Kindle Unlimited or if they were free but I don't think I would pay for them
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Storm Publishing for an advance copy of Murder at Castle Traprain, the second novel to feature former DI turned PI, Grace McKenna, set primarily in Portobello.
Grace and her agency are asked by Russian oligarch Sacha Komorov to investigate the theft of a Fabergé egg from his private collection. He is a private man and doesn’t want to involve the police as he thinks it’s an inside job. They accept and soon her assistant, Hannah, is undercover at Castle Traprain, but things get complicated when Sacha’s wife, Katya, a former prima ballerina asks her to investigate her stalker and then one of the suspects is found murdered.
I thoroughly enjoyed Murder at Castle Traprain, which is a straightforward murder investigation in the sense that none of the perpetrators are identified before the denouement and the reader can guess alongside Grace and her team. Obviously there is a lot more to the novel than just that with several potential suspects, more bodies, physical attacks and some unexpected twists. I found it entertaining as it held my attention throughout, but it doesn’t bear close inspection as it’s not quite realistic with the Russian characters arguing in English and so, easily understood by the eavesdropping team, for example.
The novel is told from various points of view, chiefly Grace and Hannah, so the reader gets a wide view on events, but not wide enough to reveal the perpetrator or the motive. Some of it is more guessable than other bits, but what it does do is lay bare the secrets of the Komorov household, and there are some crackers. It jogs along at quite a fast pace with plenty of puzzles for the reader to piece together, some of them genuinely creepy and others simply one more piece to slot in.
I like Grace and her team. She hasn’t had it easy over the past few years, but she’s beginning to come to terms with it and is establishing a close bond with her team. It’s pleasant to see such friendship.
Murder at Castle Traprain is a good read that I can recommend.
Having read and enjoyed all of Jackie Baldwin’s D.I. Frank Farrell series of novels, when the first of the Grace McKenna mysteries was published, I decided to give it a try. I wasn’t disappointed, even though Grace McKenna is a very different character from D.I. Frank Farrell and the stories are set around the cases that Grace and her small team at the newly fledged Portobello Detective Agency take on.
Things are starting to look up for Grace and her team and her staff, Jean and Hannah are starting to gain the experience that they will need if the Agency is to become successful and jobs are coming in. When a wealthy local landowner, the enigmatic Russian Sacha Komorov who owns the Castle Traprain Estate, contacts Grace with a case that is so sensitive that he can’t discuss it over the phone, she is intrigued enough to drive out to see him at the castle.
Sacha Komorov is a collector of Fabergé eggs and apparently the latest priceless addition to his collection has disappeared. It can only be an inside job and Komorov needs Grace’s services to uncover the traitor within his own household. With a wide range of suspects ranging from Komorov’s dissolute brother to his trusted housekeeper and even the wealthy guests that Komorov was entertaining on the evening the egg disappeared, Grace is going to have her work cut out. Things are very soon complicated when the beautiful and troubled Katya, a former prima ballerina and Komorov’s wife, begs for Grace’s help in catching a very disturbing stalker.
I won’t reveal any more of the plot, but it was a novel that held my interest to the final word and kept me turning the pages. Well done Jackie Baldwin in creating a character that is the equal I think to D.I. Frank Farrell in solving what appear to be unsolvable cases.
Murder at Castle Traprain" by Jackie Baldwin is a delightful addition to the world of Scottish Crime mystery thrillers. Set in the backdrop of Castle Traprain, this novel offers readers a captivating blend of intrigue, quirky characters, and a murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. The story follows the sharp-witted, Grace Mckenna, who finds herself entangled in a web of secrets and murder. Baldwin masterfully crafts the characters, each with their own quirks and secrets, making them feel like old friends you can't help but root for Grace’s tenacity and wit make her a compelling protagonist, and her interactions with the other characters are compelling. The plot is intricate and well-paced. As the story unfolds, you'll find yourself drawn deeper into this Scottish Crime Novel, eagerly trying to solve it alongside Grace McKenna. The setting of Castle Traprain is described with such detail that it becomes a character in itself, adding to the book's charm and atmosphere. What sets "Murder at Castle Traprain" apart from other cosy mysteries is the author's ability to seamlessly weave social issues into the narrative. Baldwin touches on themes like class differences and the impact of the past on the present, adding depth and complexity to the story without overshadowing the mystery. In summary, "Murder at Castle Traprain" is a delightful mystery thriller that combines a charming setting, well-crafted characters, and a compelling mystery. Jackie Baldwin's storytelling prowess shines through in this novel, making it a must-read for fans of the genre. It's a mystery that will keep you entertained and guessing until the final page, and it's certainly a worthy addition to your reading list.
Cozy mysteries are my favorite, and Jackie Baldwin is a great addition to any cozy mystery lover’s collection!
I had the chance to read Baldwin’s first book in the Portobello mystery series earlier this year, and when this one came up I jumped at the chance. The series ticks all the boxes – a whip-smart female lead, a tenuous love connection, a delightful cast of supporting characters, and a delightful town as a backdrop. I’d say I kind of hate how formulaic cozies are, but it’s what we show up for and I know it.
Cozy mysteries are a murder book where, to me, murder almost seems beside the point. Yes, murder is actually the entire point. But unlike a thriller or horror story, the characters and setting, and romance really make the story. And while the murder is important – we don’t want a story without it – it’s a balancing act. There are absolutely thrilling bits where someone we love is in danger. There are parts where a character we like is now under suspicion. And Baldwin delivers beautifully on all these things we expect.
She also brings her own, new, unexpected elements as well. The romantic elements in this story are anything but formulaic, and in many ways far from cozy. The danger is a bit more than your average cozy, harkening back to the early days of the genre when things were a little less cozy at times. The heroine also deals with some very serious issues like the suicide of her son, which happened before the first book. She constantly worries her friends and family with her own depressive grief episodes, understandable for a mother who has lost her only child.
Who’s It For If you love a cozy mystery, you will love this story. Whether you’re a devoted reader of the genre, or you’ve cut your teeth on shows like Father Brown and Granchester, this is a great book for you. But don’t expect just cozy vibes. Murder is not the only serious subject Baldwin tackles within her pages.
Content Warning: Suicide, Suicidal ideation, Pregnancy, Infidelity, Domestic Abuse, Adult Situations, Adult Language, Violence, and more.
4.5 Stars When a wealthy local landowner contacts Grace about a case so sensitive he can’t even discuss it over the phone, she’s instantly intrigued. But things take an unexpected turn when Komorov's beautiful and troubled wife, Katya, begs for Grace's help to catch a disturbing stalker. The plot thickens when one of the potential suspects is found murdered in the Housekeeper's quarters . The second outing for Grace & her new Portobello Detective Agency & a very good mystery it was. The characters were very well portrayed & I was drawn in from the start & kept guessing until the denouement. I really like Grace, Hannah, Jean & Brodie & love how their friendship is growing. An intriguing cosy mystery with the usual twists, turns & red herrings, the pace is very good & I read it in two sittings. Roll on book 3 My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Thank you @lovebooktours for having me on the tour and the gifted book. The opinions are my own.
Although this is book 2 of the Detective Series, it can still be read as a stand-alone. The chapters are short, the plot flows quite smoothly and the writing engaging and straight forward. I enjoyed the tense vibe throughout and though it wasn’t exactly atmospheric, the mystery element was maintained quite well. I was already sold on the book since it’s set in Edinburgh, Scotland. The protagonist, Grace, is a fairly likeable character, albeit struggling with the aftermath of her personal tragedy and tackling mental health. This aspect of the story added a certain depth and her team seemed like a fun one to work with. I like a story with some good banter that makes you laugh and love at the same time. Sacha was someone I couldn’t warm up to but tolerate, however, his brother got under my skin. I did not like him. Katy’s is the kind of character you can’t really say if you like or hate them but they keep you interested. The harshness of some characters definitely added the right element of danger to the plot. This was overall a quick read, tackling some serious issues apart from being a good cozy mystery.
3 1/2 stars. This left me feeling hollowed out. Crimes of the heart (they don't even have to be illegal) can do as much damage as anything done in hatred. The mystery, more a detective story than a cozy, is the second in the series starring Detective Grace McKenna and her agency who are asked by the reclusive, wealthy and perhaps tied-to-the-Russian mafia, Sacha Komorov, to investigate the robbery of a Faberge egg that seems to be an inside job. Meanwhile, his wife asks Grace to catch a stalker that she doesn't want her husband to know about. During the investigation a person in found murdered in the house.
There is plenty of action, suspense and good detection in this story along with psychological depth, characters you care for and twists and turns to keep you guessing. Grace and the other members of her agency are competent and professional. You won't find amateur detectives in this outfit. Risks they take don't seem foolish or impulsive. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
I read, reviewed & loved the first book in this series Murder at the Seaside earlier in the year (review on my grid) so was really looking forward to the follow up & was not disappointed. We pretty much pick up where book one finished so we see Grace embracing & building a new relationship (vague I know but I don't want to spoil the amazing ending to book one) while continuing with her very busy post police force career as a private investigator with her beloved team & side kick Harvey. This was another cozy mystery but also so much more, there's depth & grit & sadness along with mystery. Grace continues to be a strong, fearless, determined character who you will find yourself relating to & rooting for, I also loved seeing Hannah have more of a role & the developing relationship between herself & Grace. There is alot going on in this book with more than one case being investigated but they all slot in together nicely, with lots of twists & turns this is a true page turner, a perfect cozy Autumn read.
I received a copy of Murder At Castle Traprain in exchange for my honest review, all thoughts are my own.
October appears to be a murder mystery reading month for me. In this one I really loved the female main character – she is stubborn, strong and probably a bit too committed to her job but this made her really interesting to read.
The plot kept me intrigued and the mystery was really well done, keeping me guessing throughout. The twists and turns were brilliantly written.
I liked the seting in this book and the castle background really added to the atmosphere that this author creates. I think it added to the whole story and I really enjoyed picturing the setting where events were playing out. Despite being a clever, twisty mystery – there was a real cosy feel to the whole novel which I enjoyed.
This can be read as a standalone and I hadnt read the previous book; I think this was fine but I did find it hard initially to keep track of who the characters were. So while I think this a good read on it’s own, reading the first book would probably have made this even more enjoyable for me.
This is the second book in the Detective Grace McKenna series and having read book 1, Murder at the Seaside back in May, I was so excited to get the chance to read and review this book too.
I love Baldwin's writing style which draws you straight in from the start. And being back with Grace and Harvey felt like being back visiting friends (although I'm pretty glad I wasn't there with them!)
When collector Sacha finds a very expensive Fabergé egg missing from his home at the castle, he knows it's an inside job and contacts Grace to come and solve the mystery. Whilst there, Sacha's wife needs a stalker problem sorting, but doesn't want to involve her husband! When one of the suspects is found murdered, things take ana unexpected turn.
I think that this book could be read as a standalone as the story does feel complete and isn't full of references to the first book, but you really will miss out on the character development, which I sometimes feel is just as important to keep track of. The building of the relationship within her team at Portabello is now taking shape and it's lovely to watch that develop as a side story.
I adored the setting for this book. I love castles and especially this being restored and lived in. Again, the descriptive writing really paints a vivid image of the castle that totally immerses you as you read. I would love to visit!
There were numerous new characters in this book as we look at the new case, each with their quirks and flaws and the added interest of the culture and class differences.
With so much going on you really need to keep focus to try and spot the relevent pieces of information along the way, but I still had no clue who the murderer was until the reveal - lots of twists and turns.
A fast-paced read that will keep you hooked until the end.
My go to books are always crime and I always want go to authors and I’ve definitely found another one in Jackie Baldwin.
The first thing I loved about this book was that it is set in Portabello with trips to nearby places such as Edinburgh and North Berwick, places I spent a lot of my youth visiting.
This is the second book in the series and I will definitely be reading the first one.
The story centre on Grace McKenna and her team at her fledgling detective agency. Following the success of one of her previous jobs, Grace is hired by Sacha Komorov following the theft of a faberge egg from his home, Castle Traprain.
After Grace starts her investigation she becomes drawn into an investigation of a stalker and very soon after, a murder.
The story picks up in pace very quickly as new evidence and murders make life more difficult for Grace and her team as they also become targets of a psychopath within the walls of the castle.
Creepy castles, lives of the rich and famous, and burgled Fabergé eggs-Murder at Castle Traprain delivers all of these and more in a fun, gripping package.
Two notes: First, I really feel like this book would have made more sense to me if I'd read the first book first. I eventually figured out who everyone was, but it took a while. Second, it amused me to read all the previous reviews complaining that this work was more of a cozy mystery. Ironically, I read almost exclusively cozy mysteries and, to me, this seemed a lot more hard core. It seems like this book exists uncomfortably in the gap between thriller/mystery and cozy. If you read both, you will enjoy this work, but if you only read one side of the genre, you may not find this books hits the right notes for you.
Set in Edinburgh, this murder mystery investigation features former Detective and now Private Investigator Grace McKenna. This is the second book in the series and reads well as a standalone. After success in a high-profile murder investigation, Grace is employed by a Russian living at Castle Traprain to find a valuable item from his collection. The crimes become increasingly more severe as Grace and Hannah work at the castle trying to solve a complex and dangerous case. The characters are believable and vivid. The investigation is complex and immersive, drawing the reader into the action. I like the investigation team, the female protagonists and the Scottish setting for this engaging story. I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
This is such a good mystery book! From the start, it’s interesting and complex. Nothing is as it seems. The plot is thoroughly thought through and there were so many plot twists I could not imagine making the right guess on the perpetrator. I like Grace as a character. She’s very strong and I like reading about her emotions and her thoughts. Somehow, she’s someone I strongly feel for and I want her to find happiness. I also like Hannah’s big role in this book. They make a good team. The ending was surprising and it I was wrong in my many guesses. The very ending made me enraged and a bit sad for Grace. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Former DI Grace McKenna left The Job after personal tragedy and came to start the Portobello Detective Agency with a cohesive group and the occasional assist by her DCI ex-husband. A priceless Faberge Egg goes missing under conditions worthy of Mission Impossible and the first murdered body is that of the housekeeper. There are also the weirdly unsubtle threats to the wife of the (justifiably) paranoid Russian ex-pat and a myriad of other peculiarities. Weaving throughout the story are the problems and insecurities that Grace grapples with in her personal life. A good read. I requested and received an EARC from Storm Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!
Having previously read a couple of Jackie Baldwin’s books, including Murder at the Seaside (book 1 of the Detective Grace McKenna Scottish Murder Mystery series), and thoroughly enjoying them, I couldn’t wait to see what Murder at Castle Traprain had in store for us.
The story begins with Grace and her team taking on what seems to be a small case involving the theft of a Fabergé egg, which then becomes more complicate when it is revealed to be a priceless imperial Febergé egg. But this case is still a lot more than it seems, and there’s no way that the team could ever be prepared for the chaos that is about to surround them. A simple theft case soon turns into a case of theft, stalking, and murder…
Along side this, we pick up right where we left off with Grace’s own story. Following the revelation at the end of book one, Grace is now building a new and very special relationship in her life, along with rebuilding some old ones. Although the death of her son, Connor, is still as painful as ever, these relationships in her life seem to be massively improving her mental health, and making her loss a little easier to live with. Of course, she also still has her trusty support dog, Harvey, who it’s impossible not to love.
In regards to characters, this story has a very interesting mix. Obviously we have the characters that we already know: Grace, Hannah and Jean who are Grace’s team, Brodie (Grace’s ex-husband), and a few side characters (Brodie’s girlfriend Julie, and Grace’s sister and her family). Then we have the new characters who are involved in the case Grace is working on, and to say they’re a lot to handle is an understatement. Sacha Komorov is powerful, wealthy, and extremely proud, but his brother Nickolai is very different. He is sneaky, resentful, and clearly spoilt. But I found Katya rather difficult to read… The whole household was very secretive, and it was hard to know who to trust.
There were so many elements to this story, and gradually they begin to connect together. Watching all of the different investigations unfold was really enjoyable, and I loved the way they all tied in to each other. As the story continues, the pace really begins to speed up. Grace and her team throw themselves into huge amounts of danger, and the story comes together in a thrilling climax. I had a few theories along the way as to what was really going on, but I never expected the outcome.
Overall, this is a fantastic continuation of Grace’s story, with a real gritty mystery at the centre of it all. I hope there are going to be more books in this series, because this is a team that I would love to stick with for a while longer.
I give Murder at Castle Traprain a 4.5 star rating!
I thought the first book on this series was fabulous, but the second one was even better! Grace McKenna and her team, Jean and Hannah, are hired to find out who stole a rare Faberge’ egg belonging to a rich Russian business man. Once again, Grace shows herself to be strong-willed, determined and intelligent. When she and her team are out in danger, she must use all of her wits to keep them all alive. I really liked how Grace became even stronger in this book, seemingly to finally be able to put the death of her son to rest and her business is growing. The setting is great and it was easy to picture the action. I really enjoyed this and can’t wait for book 3.
