This work is a collection of essays by the author. Cullmann is a German NT scholar who was an official observer at Vatican II and an active participant in the ecumenical movement. Cullman's vision of a unity of confessional stances sees the doctrines of each church as a distinct charism. He is very clear about the kind of enthusiasm that tries to move beyond doctrinal confessions. His explanations of how the doctrine of the papacy actually works to hinder unity as well as his reflections on major ecumenical milestones of the 70s and 80s were very insightful. While proscriptively this work leaves much to be desired I really appreciated this realistic and faithful look at the challenges of ecumenism.
