The Undead Day Five

Rate this book
My name is Howie. I was named after my father Howard, but it became too confusing to have two Howards, so I became Howie. I am 27 years old and I work as a night’s manager in a supermarket.
I will tell you what happened.

On Friday the world fell apart. A zombie infestation has ravaged Europe. Howie was at home and quickly had to learn to fight and survive in this new world as he battled through hordes of undead, desperately trying to reach his family...The Undead Day One.

On Saturday he went back to his town but an undead stripper and her psychotic boyfriend awaited him. Then he met Dave and everything changed as they went to war on the undead...The Undead Day Two.

On Sunday, Howie and Dave have to travel across country still searching for Howie’s family. Their travels bring them into contact with many strange people as they battle with zombies and other survivors...The Undead Day Three.

Monday. Day Four. Howie and Dave have to battle their way out of the police station and make a disturbing discovery. They finally reach Salisbury Army Training Centre and find a massive army of undead soldier zombies, new recruits, an arrogant and cowardly officer and more battles. Meanwhile the infection is learning to control new species…The Undead Day Four.

Tuesday, Day Five. Howie, Dave and the teenage army recruits drive the Armoured Personnel Carrier through villages, killing every horde they find. The infection evolves and learns more skills and starts to target Howie and his group of resistors. Introducing Sarah, Howie’s sister at home in her apartment in London. Fighting to survive with any method available. Howie and his group find a fuel station when things go horribly, horribly wrong…The Undead Day Five.

Wednesday, Day Six. Howie, Dave and their group travel to London to find Sarah, Howie’s sister. Meeting more wonderful and strange characters on the way. They find another commune led by the enigmatic Big Chris which lead to an amazing adventure. The infection continues to evolve in a shocking twist. The zombies get faster, meaner and tougher and the battles more intense as they fight to survive. The tragedy strikes…. The Undead Day Six

“Rats and zombies all coming for us. Doesn’t it just make you feel special?”

It’s only been five days “since the world fell”. I love that R.R. Haywood line—since the world fell. 5 days! But Howie, Dave, and the lads have seen and done a massive amount of destruction. As they make their way to London, the recruits learn and practice different killing methods and weapons on the hordes of the infected. New weapons like sniper rifles, grenades, and flame throwers! are now at their disposal. The “blood, bone, and bits” factor is astonishing. I love it! Their locked & loaded arsenal makes me smile. Dave too! :)

In addition to the squad getting closer and more effective, The Undead: Day 5 introduces readers to a couple of new points of view. For one, we meet Howie’s sister, Sarah, in London. And. AND! “The infection watches through the eyes of many hosts.” We get to hear from the infection itself! Yup, you heard me. It’s creepy as f*ck.

I’m going to try to wrap this up now because I don’t want to spoil any of the surprises and believe me….there are some fun surprises here. Before I go though, I have to shout out some love for the writing. The first and last chapters in this installment are hold-up-to-the-heavens perfect! I had some trouble switching gears to Sarah’s voice at first, but I adjusted soon enough. The opening chapter hooked me hard though and that ending! The ending is why Day 5 gets 5 glowing stars from me. The action packed pace, suspense, and heroics collide oh-so bloody, beautifully on the page. The anger and battle lust build and build! I balled my hands into fists, gasped, rooted, roared, and laughed! It was one hell of a battle.

I’m off to Day 6. I can’t wait for more!

Day 5: The Fuel Station.

Not a big fan of the infection having a POV.

(Day 5 of 6 from the “Part 2” audiobook)
This one was much better than the last one (and still short and easy to follow along). We get to meet Sarah, Howie’s sister, and her story line was good and refreshing. There were still a lot of army guys but we get to know them a little better which helps. We also get to know the infection better which is an interesting adaptation, or difference, from a series like The Walking Dead. Dave is still awesome.

Audiobook narrator Dan Morgan rating: 3 stars
Same situation… The narrator is just ok. Would be nice to have slightly more variation in voices.

It was really unnerving to see how quickly the infection could evolve. It had some kind of sentience and it was constantly monitoring the zombies all around the world, almost as if they shared a hive mind.

I liked how the author included little recaps but rather than giving them in chunks and info dumps, they were given gradually throughout the current story.

I'm so glad that Sarah, Howie's sister, was finally introduced properly and that her POV was included. I'm looking forward to finding out more about her.

Howie has grown a lot since the first book and has adjusted to the role of the leader quite well. Dave is also starting to come out of his shell a little bit, even if it's only with Howie.

The pacing was fast and the action and fighting scenes were well done.

WOW. What an absolutely brilliant read. I read this in one sitting, shed some tears and on the edge of my seat the entire time. I have never rooted for two fictional characters more than I have been for Howie and Dave. The relationship between these two is absolutely heart wrenching! It’s only fair that this receives one of my rarely awarded six star reads. I absolutely cannot wait to read the sixth book in this series. The best zombie apocalypse series I’ve ever encountered

One must have some sorrow I guess. This one is a bit darker as the Infection adapts to changes. As the story is told you learn more and more about the enemy. Some very sad points but still going strong. I can't guess where the plot is going. Oh, I have guessed but usually not correct. Thank You "Mister Haywood"

The writing continues to be quite engaging but the intelligence of the virus seems very uninspiring. Let's see, maybe I'll continue the series.

Cows, hoses and a service station full of rats....not a sentence I would ever think would make sense, but now it does!

OMG! What was that? This book seriously gave me palpitations! I wanted to throw my phone/kindle across the room but also clutch it for dear life and continue to read...this was such a crazy ride! The laughs balanced out the drama perfectly and Mr. Haywood's style and characterization just gets better and better with each installment. He has such a strong voice, I am in awe! I bow down to you, Mr. Haywood, Sir!
P.S Still love Dave... Blowers, Cookey, Jamie and Tucker are fast becoming firm favorites and Howie...Mr. Howie, sir...love him...Also Sarah is so bad ass...can you tell these books have infected me? I am wholeheartedly obsessed!!
Day 6, here I come!
Current list of things I shall be bringing along to the Zompoc:-
Spatula
Hose ( from a swanky apartment block in London...of course, only the best ;) )
a Dave (preferably, THE Dave but Howie in a rage would do in a pinch....but then again perhaps one of the recruits would be nice...oh hell, I want the entire team, if poss.. thank you, please)

This review is for The Undead part 5 (not day 5) as I'm listening to this on Audible and the labelling is slightly different. It goes up to day 11 I think.

Howie and the gang start on the Isle of Wight, having defeated Darren. They steal a catamaran to sail them to a Navy supply ship in Portsmouth harbour. They load up on ammo and supplies, first killing all the undead on the ship.

The parallel story is about Maddox, who runs a council estate gang - and this storyline is actually really interesting. There is a conflict between Howie and Maddox who work together by accident to defeat the zombies and a raid on the estate by local residents, however this is resolved by the end of the episode.

The gang make it back to Fort Spitbank feeling somewhat dejected because they've completed their mission and worry that they won't feel like such a 'unit' now that they're home, but Doc wants them to go out tomorrow morning to get medical supplies so they've got a new mission.

A better written episode than the last one by a mile, and I've started listening to part 6 immediately.

Once again, the dynamic of Mister Howie and Dave is just a fun romp in the zombie apocalypse. The new recruits were developed a little more, and are performing nicely. The whole group is just one big zombie killing machine, with almost no break in the action. Especially since they are now being targeted by the Infection. We also get a little development and back story on Mister Howie's sister, Sarah.

~Short Review~

Characters: They were well-portrayed.

Storyline: Holy crap! The story was intense and getting better and better! It hooked me up & I couldn't even blink, I kept reading, very addictive if you ask me. Smart move for "The Infection", hell they thought like normal human, that was scary!

+ Points: The Infection's POV. It was genius to use them for what they thought, how they were planning to take down Howie. That made this book different.

- Points: Sarah's story was short.

Overall: Hang in there myself. 4,5✩
