The Undead Day Six

Rate this book
My name is Howie. I was named after my father Howard, but it became too confusing to have two Howards, so I became Howie. I am 27 years old and I work as a night’s manager in a supermarket.
I will tell you what happened.

On Friday the world fell apart. A zombie infestation has ravaged Europe. Howie was at home and quickly had to learn to fight and survive in this new world as he battled through hordes of undead, desperately trying to reach his family...The Undead Day One.

On Saturday he went back to his town but an undead stripper and her psychotic boyfriend awaited him. Then he met Dave and everything changed as they went to war on the undead...The Undead Day Two.

On Sunday, Howie and Dave have to travel across country still searching for Howie’s family. Their travels bring them into contact with many strange people as they battle with zombies and other survivors...The Undead Day Three.

Monday. Day Four. Howie and Dave have to battle their way out of the police station and make a disturbing discovery. They finally reach Salisbury Army Training Centre and find a massive army of undead soldier zombies, new recruits, an arrogant and cowardly officer and more battles. Meanwhile the infection is learning to control new species…The Undead Day Four.

Tuesday, Day Five. Howie, Dave and the teenage army recruits drive the Armoured Personnel Carrier through villages, killing every horde they find. The infection evolves and learns more skills and starts to target Howie and his group of resistors. Introducing Sarah, Howie’s sister at home in her apartment in London. Fighting to survive with any method available. Howie and his group find a fuel station when things go horribly, horribly wrong…The Undead Day Five.

Wednesday, Day Six. Howie, Dave and their group travel to London to find Sarah, Howie’s sister. Meeting more wonderful and strange characters on the way. They find another commune led by the enigmatic Big Chris which lead to an amazing adventure. The infection continues to evolve in a shocking twist. The zombies get faster, meaner and tougher and the battles more intense as they fight to survive. The tragedy strikes…. The Undead Day Six

“We draw breath, and we roar our rage into the air.”

R.R. Haywood’s Day 6 throws a few new ingredients into his end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it zombie mix. We get new anger, new faces, and a whole new scary strain. Bring it on!

The infection is learning. And evolving. And it’s coming for Howie! I love the growth happening here. Different layers are coming to light and I love where it’s headed. A couple of developments in this installment broke my heart and in ways that still haunt me too. I have to applaud Mr. Haywood for the way he addresses the violence. All the blood and guts make you wonder what the cost will be in the end. Will these guys ever be the same?

Mostly, my whoops of glee are for the way these characters come to life though. They all found a place in my reading world so quickly. I love these characters! The new voices too. Big Chris and Malcolm and Clarence all fit right in with Howie, Dave and the lads. They feed off each other perfectly---no pun intended there. The humor along with the I-have-your-back mentality are already established. And it’s something special to watch. This group is gross and childish, but funny too. I laughed out loud more than once here. The superhero debate and the shopping for weapons pit stop absolutely cracked me up!

Check this series out. It’s a must for zombie fans.

I've read all 5 previous books and this, I must say, is even better. Can't wait for day seven. I can never guess what will happen next, so I hope Mr Howie will be okay. He's a great character.

The Infection became much more intelligent and started to plan and organise the hoardes of zombies more. I liked how it used Darren to spy on everyone else without him knowing he was carrying the infection.

I wasn't keen on how the POV would quickly switch over to Chris within Howie's chapters. I think they should've been separate POVs.

Howie has often joked throughout this series that another problem always appears every half an hour and he's pretty much right 😂. The group seems to fight and solve one issue, have a reprieve for a chapter and them something else pops up but this keeps the momentum going and helps the pacing to stay fast and consistent.

I'm glad that Howie was finally reunited with his sister, Sarah. I hope they get to catch up properly as I'd like to learn more about their relationship as well as Sarah herself.

The ending was very good. I was sad to see one of the characters die while trying to help someone else but I really liked what The Infection chose to do. It made me want to read the next book immediately.

Climaxtactic

All of these have been exceptionally great, but the build-up from when the virus takes a host within the inner circle to its climax was gripping. The climax itself was not what I was expecting, and I had many ideas. Once it got rolling I couldn't put it down until I made it to the end. I feel the same anticipation in starting Day 07, I can't think of a solution that agrees with me and then I'm presented with the perfect one I hadn't thought of, pleasantly surprised each time. It's enough to keep me going if the story was lacking anywhere else, but it isn't. The characters are unique and fantastic and it's a rare take on "behind the zombie". I've read probably 500 zombie books in the last 6 years. I'm obsessed. I recommend these books to any other zombie lovers out there, or to fans who want more than a "dead" virus story.

(Day 6 of 6 from the “Part 2” audiobook)
This one wasn’t as good as the last one but still enjoyable. Some scenes seemed to drag on and I got lost in a few places. I was starting to expect a “Walking Dead” like vibe when we meet another ‘tribe’ of humans, but luckily this series has not gone in that direction… yet. We get to meet Big Chris and he’s cool, I guess. But more characters were added that make things just a little more complicated.

Audiobook narrator Dan Morgan rating: 3 stars
Same situation… The narrator is just ok. Would be nice to have slightly more variation in voices.

This series is by far the best series I have ever read in my entire life. It’s getting to the point now where every book within the undead series is getting five stars from me. Haywood has such a way with making his writing so incredibly addictive. This is THE best apocalypse series you will ever come across. I haven’t cried over any books this year apart from the last three books I’ve read in this series. I wish I could sit here and binge the next 30 books in one sitting!

Some good developments in day 6. Successes and losses. So much happens in the first 6 days, it feels like much more time has passed!

I am totally hooked on this series, the best spin on the zombie apocalypse I have seen yet. Can’t wait to start the next one.

Another excellent instalment. Day 6 follows Howie and Dave on their rescue mission, to find Howies sister Sarah and their battles along the way. On to book 7!!

The writing continues to be quite engaging but the intelligence of the virus seems very uninspiring. Let's see, maybe I'll continue the series.

Day 6: The Commune.

Howie and the crew are on the way to London to find his sister, Sarah, but run into a commune of survivors along the way.

Some good new characters introduced in this book - looking forward to the next one!

I listen to The Undead on audiobook, so although this was part 6, it's not day 6. I think part 6 goes up to day 11, and there may be spoilers past this point.

This episode follows a similar format to part 5, with a parallel story being told. Howie and the lads return to Fort Spitbank and are sent back out immediately on a mission by Doc Roberts to raid local hospitals for medical supplies. It's a sweltering day, and you really feel their exhaustion coming through.

The other strand of the storyline introduces a new character, Paco Maguire, American movie star. His story goes form day 2 to day 11. There are times when this character really reminds me of Larry Underwood from Stephen King's The Stand in some ways. At the start, he's sort of a shithouse, but by the end of the section you start to quite like him and he learns to be less cowardly and useless. He's pretty predicable as a character but that's alright.

The two strands meet when refugees at Fort Spitbank report seeing a huge German Shepherd dog who had fought through the night and hadn't turned. That dog had been travelling with Paco Maguire, and Howie and the lads had gone out to recover the dog so that they might learn about how it has been resisting the virus.

The dog is literally the best and if she dies in a future episode I'm going to be devastated. Please don't kill the dog, R. R. Haywood!

Compelling

I read the first Three books in the series in one night as a trial of Amazon Unlimited.

An amazing, terrifying and truly moving at times account of the Zombie Apocalypse.

The scariest thing is the reference to mundane and well know n British locations that make it all the more uncomfortable to read.
The majority of Zombie stories are set in the USA or some unknown country, but, a perfect example being the siege of Tesco, the instantly recognisable situations and locales make it all the more believable.

I can highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a tale of Brotherhood, courage and hope in the face of uncertain doom.

~Short Review~

Characters: These supporting characters, such as Blowers, Cookey etc, they grew on me. Also we had Darren as main enemy, he seemed legit evil.

Storyline: Wow non-stop fighting with zombie+these young soldiers's skills has been improving and I felt like they were in the war zone. Kinda exhausting to read but I couldn't stop, it was just simply intriguing.

+ Points: Non-stop action. Gore, mayhem, blood everywhere I loved it. And also relationship between Howie-Dave haha Bromance was very strong I ship them xD

- Points: Howie's monologue. He had conversation with himself (or I can call it his deep soul? Lol) and that was creepy.

Overall: I love zombies! Next! 3,5✩
