I thought this was a fairly run-of-the-mill collection of horror stories, the kind which play out familiar themes and then resolve themselves as you might expect before you then move onto the next. Entertaining, but unsubstantial. However, the book ends with "Cinder Images" by Gary McMahon and immediately I was taken to another level: a short, punchy, relevant, disturbing, powerful piece which subverts its tropes rather than simply uses them. It was a great final story, serving, however, only to emphasize how generic many of the other pieces had been. If only they could all have been like that.
