When God Guides

Rate this book
From Back Cover:

Does God guide individuals? Does He have a purpose and plan for every individual life? Can I ever be sure that I am in the pathway of His will, and if I miss that pathway sometime, am I perpetually condemned to a second-best kind of existence? Is guidance confined to the big things of life, or must I refer everything to God's direction?

If these are the kind of questions in your mind, then this book is for you. After an introductory chapter in which Denis Lane sets out ten principles for knowing God's guidance 27 members of the Overseas Missionay Fellowship share their experiences in relation to such diverse topics such as marriage and children, houses and staff, missionary call and type of work, and the manifold details of everyday life.

In this book guidance is clothed in flesh and blood!

"Does God guide, and does He guide individuals? Does He have a purpose and a plan for every individual life? How does He guide? Can I ever be sure that I am in the pathway of His will, & if I miss the pathway sometime, am I perpetually condemned to a second-best kind of existence? Is guidance confined to the big things of life, or must I refer everything to God's direction? These are just some of the questions we ask ourselves, each other, and God as we wrestle with the situations of life." - Denis Lane.

Denis Lane goes on to simply outline 10 principles for guidance, and then comes the flesh and blood stories where we see the principles worked out in people's lives. This book has been published by the Overseas Missionary Fellowship, so the stories are all about missionaries, but despite that, the principles apply to every Christian, whether you're going out to the mission field or not - and I certainly have not.

I received this book as a present when I was baptised at the age of 13. Many years later, the book is still on my shelf so I have easy access when I want to refer to it - and over the years it has certainly been very helpful! I really enjoy the stories too, because they help bring the principles to life and I can see how the principles are applied by real people.

Very easy to read. Highly recommended!

This book was given to me by a friend's dad at church. I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but surprisingly, I did! The book discusses how to know when God is guiding you. It gives you ten, very practical principles to follow and then, in each chapter, shares short stories of missionaries who lived out those principles. These vignettes are old, dating from the 1960s-80s (with some writings by Hudson Taylor thrown in). I felt like I was stepping back in time, listening to how God worked in these missionaries' lives. It was encouraging to read about how people wrestled to hear God's voice, doubted his leading, and ultimately walked down a path that God had prepared for them. Perhaps, it's because I just came off a short-term mission trip myself, but this book was really good.
