A Station One series book .
I won this book in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
Dr. Van Jacobs gave his life to save the universe, or so he thought... However, when he wakes up on an iceberg, he soon realizes that his actions may have gone to waste, and the universe might just need saving again.
When I entered the giveaway, I didn't realize this was the second book in a series and wasn't sure if it would be readable without having read the first. However, the author did a great job of filling in the backstory without disrupting the flow of the tale at hand. And what a tale it was - nonstop action, rifts in spacetime, government plots, and... werewolfy things and dragons?
This isn't a book that requires an intense amount of concentration on the reader's part - it's just a fun read. So much fun, in fact, that I plan on going back and reading the first in the series, if only to find out where those pesky dragons came from...
I downloaded this book and finished it within a day of finishing the first of the series-- not that it is really all that long. Not as good as the first, which I thought fantastic, this sequel runs along the same lines (and, in fact, runs along them numerous times, in several realities). Still, I will surely purchase the third book-- which, based on the ending, is absolutely coming.
I received a copy through the goodreads giveaway. Although I found the beginning to be a little slow, by chapter two I was pulled into the story and found myself lost in the worlds the author created. I also enjoyed that though the ending was believable in the context of the book, it was not one that i had anticipated.
I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I found this book to be very exciting from the first page. A lot of action and suspense. The author has a great imagination. A definite page turner for me.
I won this book through a giveaway, and before I do anything else I'd like to thank Goodreads and the author for providing me with a copy of this book for an honest review.
I must say, this is a tough book for me to review. On one hand it steps beyond implosible and into the realm of silly. Something outrageous happens almost every other page, cliches are abound, and the dialogue made me gigglesnort on more than one occasion. (Dragons, aliens, temporal disruptions, plane crashes, nuclear bombs, ninja-esque action, espionage...this book has everything AND a kitchen sink.) On the other hand, I was highly entertained. It's that quality of cheesy sci-fi that you get from shows like Primeval or Farscape. In fact, it read like a TV show, which was both a strength (it was fun to visualize all the action) and a weakness (some things that fly well on screen come off really hackneyed on the page). It's so over the top that you just sort of laugh and keep reading because you want to know what absurd thing will happen next.
Also in the plus column: I'd like to give the book props for having a kickass main character who also happens to have a gay love interest. I'm surprised none of the other reviewers have mentioned this (yet) - I was beyond tickled as this is a rarity in genre fiction.
So in summary I'll answer the following questions: Was this a good book? No. Was it a fun read? Yes.
I liked "This Time Around" by Justin McLachlan but found it a little confusing at times as Dr Van Jacobs jumps from timeline to timeline. I might have even liked it more if I had realized in advance that it is a sequel to "Time Up" published in 2011. This novel can stand on it's own, it just might have caught me more if I had read the first novel, first. "This Time Around" actually left me with the same kind of feeling as an old 1980 movie, "Altered States," that I watched for a college course which I dreamt about for quite a while as the professor drove home the reality and actuality of those conscious states. Is an altered state so very different than multiple timelines or parallel universes: I don't think it is such a big reach which made "This Time Around" all that more real for me. I enjoyed reading this novel.
Justin McLachlan the author I found is good at pulling you into the story. He has a way of making you want to read more. Found this book slow moving and hard to read, but had looked forward to reading it. Did not realize this was the second book. I don't want to give any thing away for the reader. I just feel I can not give the book a 3 star rating. I would give it to the author though.
The book keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. It jumps back and forth through different futures in time. This was confusing at times to me. I found Mr. McLachlan could of done more development with his characters. Since this was the second book, maybe it would of been better for me if I had read the first one.
If you like Sci-fiction then this is the book for you.
This is a very developed story with great characters and relationships. The pace is riveting and keeps you on your toes! I thought there was a little too much sci-fi in it as sometimes it just seemed all thrown in together just to be able to include everything in the book. The plot was still excellent and I would recommend it to other readers.
I am pretty sure by now that everyone who knows me is aware of my love of Justin McLachlan's books. And this is no exception. I fell in love with these characters while reading Time Up and had to buy the sequel instantly. I laughed and cried (there were a lot of tears towards the end, I'll admit). Just brilliant. I need more of Justin's writing in my life.
I really liked this book. I has a little bit of everything I enjoy in a book: time travel, action, dragons, and aliens. This is my first time reading this author and I think I'm going to look for more of his work in the future.
Again, Justin delivers on the interesting twists of time. This held my interest throughout the story. It continued where "Time Up" left off. A very good sequel.
