The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum has one of the most prestigious collections of automotive history in the world, and this beautiful volume pays tribute to a select group from that collection: 34 cars that won the Indianapolis 500.

Beautifully photographed by fine arts photographer Bill Pack in a way that highlights shape, form and intimate design detail — what the artist calls “painting with light” — the cars represent multiple important milestones in the Speedway’s 115-year history. The race’s first winner, the Marmon Wasp, is featured, of course. But so are cars that broke barriers and ushered in new eras of innovation in racing and the automotive industry.

Almost all the cars featured in the book are currently on display at the newly reimagined Speedway Museum, which is on the grounds at IMS and is open 363 days a year.

Each entry features four to six pages in the book, and the accompanying text, written by motorsports author and illustrator Dwight Knowlton, is a fount of fascinating information and trivia. (We learn, for example, that one driver is credited with winning the 500 without ever leading a lap.) Even longtime devotees of the Speedway will learn something new in their reading.

“Epic Drama” is designed to be on display, not relegated to a shelf. Indeed, copies are open on display at the welcome desk when you enter the museum. The winners featured in its 197 pages are only a fraction of the cars in the IMS collection. This book is beautiful enough to demand a sequel.
