Personal Reaction:

-I thought that the "First "Salmon" was a great book overall. With strong meaning, beautiful illustrations, and new vocabulary, this book was a joy to read. Since I have a strong Native American background, I liked that I could relate to some of the cultural aspects that the young boy in this story experienced throughout the book. Since diversity is so important in the classroom, I thought this book could teach other students more about other cultures. The "First Salmon" is a powerful story that any teacher could incorporate into their classroom.

Purpose:

-Overall enjoyment of this story would be a delight to all children in the classroom. Enrichment to new cultures is also important and critical in developing young children which is what this story consists of.
-Life lessons should be taught to children no matter the harsh circumstances. This story tells that there can be a bright side of life even in bad situations. It also shows good relationships between family members.

Curriculum: Grades 1-3

-While children listen to this story, they can incorporate it into their own lives. Losing a loved one can be hard to understand at a young age, but this story helps children see a bright side of remembering the good in the life that has been lost. Since the boy in "First Salmon" lost his uncle, he can relate to other children who have lost somebody.
-Different cultures are also very important when learning about others. This book could be a part of a lesson plan based on present-day Native Americans. I think that it is important to share with students cultures about Native Americans in the past but also in the future. Many times educators look past the lives that Native Americans live now and I think that it is important to show them that Native Americans still practice traditions.

Other:

-The illustrations in this book were amazingly colored and thought out. I enjoyed seeing different animals and elements of nature while reading this book. The overall quality and theme of this story made it enjoyable to read.
