Nonfiction/Twin Text Entry #4
This rhyming, informational nonfiction about bees contains wonderful illustration paired with real photography. This simple primary school book helps children to understand the life cycle and duties a bee carries out for the hive. The book describes how bees, as a team, collect pollen and nectar to make honey comb. Russian's book reminded me of "The Very Greedy Bee" by Steve Smallman because unlike real bees this bee was lazy and selfish. Smallman's bee looked out only for himself and tried to eat so much pollen and nectar that became too big to fly. In his journey to find the hive he meets lots of other insects who work as a team; this shows him the value of teamwork and sharing. This fictional fantasy and nonfiction "Bees" book pair beautifully because one talks about the teamwork and collection for the colony while the other illustrates a bee learning cooperation and sharing.
