Macbeth is one of the most popular and bloody of Shakespeare's tragedies. This accessible introduction offers a springboard into the play, taking a hands-on, performance-based approach, exploring the challenges and the rewards it presents to actors, audiences and students.
Springboard Shakespeare: Macbeth has a three-part structure: whether you're watching or reading, Ben Crystal takes you through exactly what you need to know Before, During and After the play. He combines a genuine passion and understanding of Shakespeare with his experience as an actor, giving the reader a clear route to thinking about, understanding and enjoying Macbeth.
I start teaching tomorrow. I read this over the weekend in preparation for the first lesson over Macbeth. I read this and watched “the tragedy of Macbeth (2021)” with Denzel Washington! Very insightful stuff! Crystal really educated someone that knew absolutely nothing! It has 3 segments. Before you read/watch. During you read/watch. After you read/watch. So it’s an engaging book too! The witches are great! Act 1 and 2 are fantastic. Act 3&4 are pretty slow. Act 5 is quick and great.
Whether you're reading the play, watching a movie production or seeing it at a theatre, this is a short, but informative guide. The perspective is that of Shakespeare as a theatre man, rather than an author, which allows a new way of interpreting a lot of the material. Impressive metric analysis and lots of useful, understandable information.
Loved this book. So much Shakespeare and with interesting analysis. Handy, pocket sized. Will recommend to teachers, students, and anyone who will listen to me. Can't wait for the Romeo & Juliet version.
