Il carro armato

Rate this book

Another review starting with an experience I acquired on one of my bike rides…….Apparently, mountain bike riding is an important part of my life, and I usually listen to audiobooks while riding.

description

So, A few months ago while riding in the southern part of the sea of Galilee, we arrived at the entrance of the Degania Alef kibbutz. There stands a rusting Syrian Renault-35 Pre WW2 era light tank that was left there since the Israely war of independence in 1948.

The tank in the entrance of Degania Alef is an important part of the Isrealy myth of winning independence against all odds. In accordance with the myth, the superior Syrian forces, with tanks and airplanes, rolled down from the Golan Heights, aiming to annihilate the northern part of the new state, and were stopped by a handful of defenders at the gate of the kibbutz, with grenades, molotov bottles and a projectile infantry anti tank gun.

But who actually stopped the tank and how? This is an unanswered question to this day.

Assaf Inbari, in his special talent, wove a story around the five men, each of whom claim to be the person who stopped the tank. Each person has his story of the battle, stories that represent the various approaches to zionism and the personal history of the actual fighter. Their life has continued, each has his achievements and disappointments and each has something in his life that changed since that battle at the entrance to Degania Alef. While we are exposed to the personal story of each person, we are exposed to the history of the nation of Israel and the way the country has progressed since it’s independence.

An interesting fusion of fiction and nonfiction surrounding a symbolic chapter of the nation's history.

Heartfelt tale about heroics and pride with a touch of crazy character driven stories that can only survive in such a uniquely Israeli landscape.
