When Heidi has trouble making friends at camp, she discovers that courage can be even more powerful than magic!
Heidi can’t wait to go to camp with her friend Lucy, but when they get there, Lucy’s camp friends from last year make Heidi feel unwelcome. At first Heidi uses her Book of Spells to help her win their friendship, but in the end she decides to be brave and ask the girls why they don’t like her. Heidi is surprised by their answer…and by the time camp ends she has made two new friends!
With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, the Heidi Heckelbeck chapter books are perfect for beginning readers.
It's especially hard for kids when they anticipate something only to have it turn out quite different from how they expected originally. This happens to Heidi when she goes away to camp. She finds out that her best friend has other friends, with inside jokes and lots of shared experiences which leaves her out in the cold. It's hard being left out and Heidi of course turns to magic to try and fix things.
Magic doesn't always help though, especially when dealing with things like friendship. The more she tries to take shortcuts, the more she digs herself into the mess she's made of things. In the end, Heidi has to do the hard thing - to talk about what she's feeling with those around her - to solve the problem.
It's funny how these books feel to incredibly real. Well told, with valuable lessons wrapped up in a whole lot of fun, Heidi's adventures are getting more and more interesting. I really am enjoying this series immensely!
Heidi was going to sleep away camp for two weeks. The first week wasn't so good because her best friend Lucy came along. Her friends Jill and Bree weren't very nice to her and were discluding Heidi. Lucy was trying to have them be nicer when they went to riding class. Heidi was wearing a sweatshirt and jeans for riding class and Jill and Bree were being mean because she wasn't in proper riding clothes. Lucy said "we wore a sweatshirt and jeans last year, remember guys?" They didn't talk to her in the dining hall and made fun of her during swimming lessons. They were really mean. Heidi's counselor told her what to do and then they all became friends. Her counselor told her to tell Jill and Bree that she's upset that they've been so mean and then they all became friends. It was a really nice story. Even if they're your enemy at first, they can always become your friend.
I actually felt really bad for Heidi because when Lucy and her go to camp, Lucy's friends are hogging Lucy. So Heidi keeps feeling left out. Then she casts a spell so Lucy's friends would like Heidi too. But when they go in the water, they're not friends again because the magic rubs off. Heidi comes back from the lake crying and then her counselor talks to her and says that she should tell the girls what she's feeling. After Heidi does that, they understand Heidi and feel bad. Then all four of them are friends.
I think this book talks about friendship. I think it talks about friendship because there new two friends were being mean to her because they thought they were gonna take their best friend but they talked about it and they all became friends.

I liked this book. I liked when Heidi thought there were snapping turtles in the lake and then failed the swimming test and I liked when she wrote the letter and had a shaving cream fight. I liked when they were at the campfire too.
I like about Heidi Heckelbeck goes to camp because l give it a low and a high my high is that Jill and Bree are friends with Heidi Heckelbeck at the end.😁My low is that Jill and Bree don’t like Heidi Heckelbeck in the beginning.😭
Read this with my 7 year old. It had a good lesson, and lots of pictures, but sure didn’t enjoy it as much as other chapter books we have read together.
so heidi was going camping. then lucy saw her friends and then she felt leftout so she got out her book of spells and read it then she gave it to bree and jill then they always went togeter until it was swiming the spell weared off then she was sad then her teacher talked about the probiom then jill and bree said we thot that we would lose our friend then they were friends heidi sended some notes to her brother.
Okay story about a young girl who goes to overnight camp with her best friend, who has been there before and is delighted to see her old friends which leaves Heidi feeling like a fifth wheel. Apparently Heidi, who has other books about her, is a witch and tries to use spells to become popular. That part could have been left out. It added nothing to the story.
Yes, it has all the trappings of an After School Special. Yes, it has the attempted magic "fix" (thank heavens no one's tried out the spells for real- they are common enough ingredients!). Yes, it has the "if you just talk about it" resolution. And despite it all, this book still felt authentic.
This was a good book for girls, especially those who are just starting to understand and negotiate the sometimes dramatic realm of female friendships. i liked that the book encouraged open and honest communication to correct misunderstandings.
Jasmine started this book on Friday/Saturday and finished it up Sunday during church. She seems to love the, "Heidi Heckelbeck," series so I will get the rest of the books in this series for her. Yay! :)
I picked this book because camping with my friends and making s'mores over a fire looks really fun. In this book Heidi goes to camp and she faces girl problems but things work out in the end.
