It's a light-hearted book, neither educational nor informative about anything other than not being afraid of the unknown.

The boy Cudweed, who lives in a castle with his strange looking parents and sister, is rather bored one day. He discovers an old sci-fi comic book, reads it cover to cover several times and writes off for his very own spaceship, as shown in the advertisement of the old comic book. Eventually the thing arrives and Cudweed, together with his pet monkey Fellah, have fun building the spaceship, even if the instruction booklet has mysteriously disappeared.

They set off into space, meeting at first with a frightening attack by the green and spooky looking Thrillons, the very alien race mentioned in the comic book. The boy and monkey crash land on a planet when their space ship is hit by two missiles - and just when they think they're safe, it turns out to be the Thrillon's home planet. Drat!

I won't spoil the ending - suffice it to say, there's plenty of cake involved and everybody's safe at the end. The coloured illustrations are funny and show enough detail for young exploring minds to dwell on them for a while. The text is also light-hearted and full of humour. An entertaining great little book for kids who dream of space travel every time they read a sci-fi comic book.

In this story, Cudweed is so bored that he is reading a comic book over and over. Then he reads the ads on the back and manages to get his dad to give him the money to buy a Build Your Own Spaceship Kit. This leads to him and his pet monkey Fellah having a little adventure in space. Note: If you plan on reading the other Cudweed Early Reader stories, I would read Cudweed's Birthday before this one as in that story it tells you how Cudweed got his pet monkey.

Even though the first couple of pages introduced Cudweeds mum and sister the same way as in the Cudweed's Birthday book, there was no mention of them at all in this story. It only had Cudweed and Fellah, and Cudweed's dad.

I really really loved the illustrations, and the ending of the story was amusing (won't say what it was as wouldn't want to spoil it for first time readers).

What I didn't like about the story was how unrealistic it was - how can a child just be able to build a kit spaceship and fly off just like that.

This a lovely short story with beautiful illustrations which is great for young children, and can be read as a standalone.
