This book introduces Vanishing Feast – An Heirloom Solution (VFAHS), www.vanishingfeast.com, a project that raises awareness of heirloom varieties of vegetables and the threat of extinction they face. According to a 1983 study by the Rural Advancement Foundation International, an estimated 93% of the varieties of vegetables grown in 1903 are now extinct. VFAHS encourages people to look at these heirloom varieties of vegetables as family heirlooms to plant in their garden. Jeff cites examples of heirloom plants from his own family as the inspiration for VFAHS. Future Tomatoes contains 22 exquisite full color photographs of tomato buds, along with a stories about the varieties from Jeff’s garden in 2011. This book is available as fund raising tool for any groups that supports environmental education and stewardship. Please visit vanishingfeast.com for more information.
What a lovely little book! Instead of a book of tomato photos, this is a book of tomato BUD photos. Each and every one is absolutely lovely - truly frame-able. The photos are accompanied by a brief write up of the tomato it will become. Each page is like a combination biography of and love letter to the tomato - nostalgic, historic, enthusiastic and, overall, inspiring. I want to grow every one of these now!
17 tomato unusual varieties are showcased including Mark Twain, Boxcar Willie, Cour Di Blue, Jerusalem and Red Fig, to name a few.
One note - some of the pages are straight up and a few are sideways. I actually find this to be an interesting format. There are a few edit issues but nothing at all the interferes with the enjoyment of the book.
Finally, the mission of the book comes through with a good resources page in the back and, of course, just a few photos of the tomatoes.
This would make a wonderful gift book for gardening friends and is an unusual addition to any gardening collection. I can't wait to revisit this book during the darkest and snowiest of winter days. It is sure to cheer me up.
