The Coalman Brothers have made their way in the streets. Money, respect, and the women of their choosing. With the eldest brother Aziz, at the helm, being abandoned by their father as children forged a bonded will to survive. However, for him, beneath the layers of strength and leadership, are the crumbs of anger, distrust, and an unhealed heart.
Then there’s Diamond Kees. Bold, beautiful, and in tuned with herself. Despite his beastly efforts, Aziz cannot escape her, nor can she, him. He is her person and no matter her pain, her heart remains open to giving him the love he needs.
When tragedy strikes, though, Aziz is left with an ultimate decision. Will he become the man he wished his father would be, or continue the cycle of false joy and real pain?
….I’m going to need a book about each brother…this was such a good story….Denim experienced heartbreaking pain and I too felt her pain….I love how Diesel love and took care of her…and there was past pain for Aziz, he got himself together to love Diamond the way she deserved. Despite being a novella, this story definitely packed a punch with a lot of detail and resolution. Definite Must Read!
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS* Whew!!!! This story was FULL!!! Full of laughs, full of love, full of healing and even some grief 🤧😪 that one part broke me DOWN!!! This was such a fulfilling read. It was soooo much happening in the story and even with the different storylines and characters it all tied together nicely. Aziz was a meany lol… I understood his hurt but jeez he had his foot on everybody neck! I loved the conversation with his mom! That was a real raw conversation that all children should feel comfortable having with their parent. The scene when Doe was on her cycle…. Super relatable… I got flashbacks 😩😩 poor Doe… I need her to get her own book! I’d love an update on her and finding love again! There were a few things that I would have liked closure on. One would be the relationship with Diesel and Aziz. They rode for each other as brothers but the tension between them surrounding their father needs healing. I also wanted more from Diamonds parents. What happened to them? They weren’t even at the gender reveal. I wanted more from Aziz and Diamond! She should’ve made that n!gg@ work harder 😑🥱. Overall this was a great read! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
3.5 ✨- this story follows Aziz but there were other characters that were involved in the story, including his brothers. I thought the story had a few layers and heavy topics addressed. Diamond wore me out from acting obsessed with Aziz, after he ghosted her. It took a bit long for Aziz to grow up and become accountable. I felt like the story didn’t show enough of Aziz and Diamond as a couple. However, I will continue the series.
I’m hoping as the series progress my feelings may change. But book one, which I assumed would be focused on Aziz- really was about all of the brothers.
However, in the beginning we meet Aziz and Diamond after they hook up. An encountered that made me a bit uncomfortable. He coerced her into sleeping with him and then ghosted her. The majority of the story she’s pining after him. He’s a complete jerk to every woman with the exception of his mom.
Also, I’m looking at the Denim/ Diesel/Aziz situation with a side eye. It’s a situation that’s not for me. And I can’t believe their relationship is going to work.
Hansel’s story broke my heart, which sorta endeared me to Denim.
To me this wasn’t a romance. We don’t witness Aziz and Diamond fall in love. Her friend gave her horrible advice. This couple reproducing, doesn’t mean they’re in love. Aziz was exactly that to her and HE NEVER APOLOGIZED!
Okay I went in totally hating Aziz from the jump. He was a jerk for no reason! There is a way to “keep it real” at all times and still have some couth about yourself. But the longer you read, you can tell he responds to everything in his own personal trauma. I eventually grew to like him and wanted to peel back some of his layers. I wish we could have seen more of him and his dads story broken down. Now on to me crying …cuz what!?!? I did NOT see that happening that way… at least not in a AK book! She continually shows grow with each new book. This one did not disappoint.
Let me start off by saying that I really enjoyed this story. The full story. However, Aziz!!!! Ejew he wore me out! He was not a character to love or even like. It took me most of this story to see what all the fuss was about, but Ashantay Keys did a phenomenal job developing him in a way that allowed me to see his heart that he had buried deep, deep in his chest. Diamond was so sweet and vulnerable I really wanted better for her. But her heart and spirit knew Aziz was it for her. All of the characters played an integral part in making this story what it was. So heartfelt and genuine. It was heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. I look forward to reading more from this crew.
This book just didn’t do it for me. I struggled to finish hoping it would get better but unfortunately, it didn’t. It seemed like there were extra words and over explaining and describing just to get the word count up. I feel the whole chapter 6 was pointless. Aziz was just an @$$. So out of nowhere he just wants to be with Diamond, there was no buildup. Diamond was too naive. I can understand that because he was her first experience, but come on now girl. You could’ve made him wait at least a week! I didn’t understand Denim’s willingness to deal with brothers, or how Diesel was ok with that. I did understand Aziz because he just didn’t care. What happened to Hansel was heartbreaking I really wished it was a different ending for him. But Taya should get just as much time as her brother. This is a new to me author but I’d still try another book even though this was not it for me.
Miss Lady! I wanted to find something to love about Aziz, but I couldn't even make myself like him! Why was he so damn mean, and an asshole to everyone? 😡. I get he had issues with his dad, but save that ish for him, and let everybody else live! Ughhhh... The way he used Denim and Diamond, and discarded them like they were nothing, angered me so much! 😤. Poor little naive Diamond! I don't know why she wanted this man, but she knew he was her one! I hated that she allowed him back in so easily, after he showed his whole ass! But, he eventually found some act right! Just sorry that it took tragedy for that to happen. Enjoyed getting to know the other Coalman brothers, and hope they get their own stories. Ma'am you took my anxiety to peak levels with this one! 👍👍👍
I stopped reading this book about 20 minutes in. I could not stand Aziz. I didn’t think I could stomach reading this character. But something kept nagging at me to go back , and I did. I’m so glad I did. I shed so many tears reading this book, because they way Ashantay unfolded this story , so much emotion bled through each word written. I hope these characters speak to her again because I need more of this family and their evolution. Breadcrumbs…is one of those books that stay on your mind after the last word is read.
I don't think I have ever been so upset with two characters than Diamond and Aziz. He was the rudest man I've read about in a while. If it wasn't for the fact that this author usually tells a good story; I would have cut this one short. I hoped there was a redeeming side to Aziz somewhere. And Denim needed help too. Poor Hansel... I could not believe the actions against that child. Thank Diesel, thank you for seeing the good in Denim, and Aziz for finally waking and seeing life in a better light. The message in this story... A child shall lead them....
The book hit on just about everything I like to see in the evolution of a story from its growth shown in characters, to the descriptive world building, and to the depicting of real life experiences.
Breadcrumbs left me yearning to know more about these men and how their relationship dynamics outside of their brotherly bond would continue to evolve on all spectrums.
I’m sorry but this was a corny. It’s was a short book but the beginning gave too much and the end just sped through shit. Lol like how did Aziz go from a straight gutta hoe, to a dotting boyfriend band baby daddy in 2 weeks lol seriously??? Them diesel just gone go play house with a bitch him and his brother was sharing??? Seriously ??? I’m sorry it was so unbelievable and annoying . All the women were weak and stupid. Throw it away.
I gave this a 2 because I finished it but I personally didn't find it enjoyable. Just because it wasn't for me doesn't mean it's not for someone else. I will explain why it wasn't for me-
**LIGHT SPOILERS** The beginning of the story starts straight off with Diamond and Aziz in a very intimate situation with no explanation as to how they got there. Later in the story it was mentioned that they met at a comic book convention and that was the extent of it. There was no mention of deep conversation, intense connection, or anything related that would bring these two to a hotel room in the situation they were in. Not only that, SHE PAID FOR THE HOTEL ROOM! So, her high school sweetheart (who was apparently her first love and very sweet...just a mama's boy) wasn't worthy of her v-card but a stranger with a cute face and a shared surface level interest in comics that you know nothing about is worthy of your body and all your love and affections? WHAT!?! There was no love! There was only sex…and a situation.
The unnecessarily extra and over the top descriptors were also a bit much. It felt like when I had an assignment to write a paper with a word count and just fluffed it up to meet the word count.
Out of a 172 pages the characters that were supposed to be the FMC and MMC interacted for about 40 pages (rounded up). Nine of those pages he was coercing her to be intimate with him, gave a less than memorable experience, then slept. It was hella cringe. After a horrible first time (regardless of her rose-colored glasses...bc that was horrible), he naps then up and leaves and doesn't call her afterward. He didn’t even see her to her car!!! But of course she is pining after him and calling him her person. And listening to the horrible advice of her friend telling her call him and follow him when she randomly sees him driving. She needs new friends. And how old are they supposed to be? Her conversations with her friend sound very juvenile and she kept referring to male anatomy as a "thang."
Aziz was the oldest of 5 brothers who all seemed to be established in their lucrative career of street pharmacy. But I don’t recall ages being discussed for anyone.
Aziz and Diesel were sharing a woman who had a 14 year old son (super cringe on the scene with him and his girlfriend. Not necessary to the plot whatsoever). Why is this even a thing? Passing around a woman? Aziz didn’t even like her! And it was never addressed how that came to be or the actual impact it had on their relationship as brothers. It was glossed over very quickly.
The synopsis made it seem like this was a story about Aziz and Diamond but it jumped around so much I forgot who it was supposed to be about at times. Aziz's brothers got more attention in this story than Diamond. Diamond was just an afterthought that was building up Aziz to be this great love based on nothing.
The synopsis also mentioned that the 5 brothers were abandoned by their father but the scene in the book where they all visited him made sure to make it known that "he wasn't a good dad but did the best he could...and provided for them financially from afar." So, clearly not abandoned.
The only connection between Diamond and Aziz was him being her first. He wasn't nice to her, wasn't considerate, paid no attention to her, and gave her no stimulating conversation. He wasn't even gentle or giving with her on her first time. But of course that warranted her being in love and calling him her person and lusting after him the entire book while he gave her not a second thought. He literally pretended not to know her when she called and then said nothing else about her until toward the end of the book when he miraculously couldn't stop thinking about her during the talk with his mother.
Let's circle back to the 14 year old son of the woman Aziz and Diesel shared. How did he have more common sense than his mother? He could see that Aziz cared nothing about her but she was so in lust. Over what? All she did was service him, he stood up, wiped off, tucked back in and left. The conversations between the son and his girlfriend sounded nothing like the conversations of 14 year olds. What adolescent teenage girl with cramps is going to say her uterus feels like it’s coming out of her body? And why were they ready to fight those random girls at his school like they were on an episode of Love & Hip Hop but then turned around and got dropped off at Chuck E Cheese?
Just as abruptly as it started…it ended.
There was more but I feel like I'm starting to write a book on the book. Because it wasn't what I enjoy out of my reading experience, I personally wouldn't recommend this book and will not be continuing with the series. Again, these observations were based on my own reading experience. What I didn’t necessarily enjoy may be someone else’s five star.
Yea this just wasn't my cup of tea. The couple Aziz & Diamond relationship was lacking if you ask me. There was no chemistry between the two, they had sex one time. Aziz ghosted her and spent the majority of the book ignoring her so when he talks to his mother and brother about his feelings for her I'm left saying wait WHAT? You have feelings for her when. I never read a book where the couple spends barely anytime with each other. I've read other books from this author that I really enjoy this just won't be one of them.
I will say that I enjoyed the other couples relationship in this book definitely Diesel and Denim. Hansel ending was so wrong I wish we could of seen some accountability on Taya. Her little behind cost someone their life because she got rejected. That was senseless wanted Doe and Denim to handle her.
When I first started this book I could not get over Aziz. He was rude, uncaring, crass, and an asshole. Although his attitude was not without reason he was definitely taking it out on the wrong people. But there comes a day where every person like Aziz becomes grounded. Diamond was so naive which is not a bad thing but sometimes it can be when the wrong person has access to you. I'm glad Aziz got it together. I really enjoyed every interaction between Diesel and Denim and how Diesel treated Denims son. I wouldn't mind each brother having their own book to learn more about them and their family dynamics. Overall this was a good story and very well written.
What did I just read? I’m sorry this wasn’t a good book at all. Nor was it realistic. All of sudden he wants to be with ole girl and they’re in love? Yeah I don’t believe that at all. And how was she showing so quickly? Idk this wasn’t good at all.
OMG…Aziz and Diamond’s journey. Wow & whoa! This book was full of all types of action and provoked all types of emotions 🫣😳💔❤️😡🤯😩😭😉. Mostly on behalf of Aziz! There was know dull moments. Aziz was a lot. He was hard to like until you learned his journey. So wait for it🤔! Does he get better? Diamond was book smart, sheltered, kind and naive. She was trusting and sweet. Then sweet met bitter! This story will take you on a ride ‘⚠️’ you’ll need a helmet. It hits some holes, dips and deep falls. Then it’s all up hill. It is written well. The writing style is very unique to this author. Ms. Keys style I’d describe as angsty, very expressive and descriptive. This storyline will leave you pondering and wanting more. Another good read!
Have you ever come across a character that you dislike immediately and think that they have no redeeming quality? Let me introduce you to Aziz. He was rude, disrespectful, angry, unfeeling and unforgiving. This is where the author shone through with character development. It took a tragedy (a heartbreaking one) to knock sense into Aziz. From there you can see him turning his life around. This story teaches us to never give up. You never know what it will take to cause a change in a person. Aziz was a handful and then some! Loved Abdul the father and his brothers. Aziz definitely gained a gem in Diamond.
It took me awhile to get through this because of all the shock factors. Like Ik she lying. 🤣 She had me from the beginning. I just couldn’t believe sis was sleeping with two brothers and they knew about. Denim is one bad mf🤣😩. I’m so happy she finally choose Diesel. I love him for her. Um miss ma’am that hospital and funeral scene took me out. I couldn’t stop bawling my eyes out. I had to stop reading until I calmed down. Hansel was a good kid. He just wanted the best for his mom. As for as Aziz I didn’t like him at first but Im happy he had a change of heart for diamond. They both deserve to be happy. 🥰❤️ Can I get a update on Denim & Diesel please and thank you lol?☺️
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Aziz was a hurt soul and with that he hurt others. I wanted Diamond to be like “f” you dude because I couldn’t hold off for him. He was a true Ahole for sure and Diamond was naive for sure. But he got it together at the end and made things right.
Denim was slow when it came to Aziz and her relationship, I was like you have a good dude Diesel right there in your face looking to love you and your son. And speaking of her son Ashantay why you do me like that…all in my feelings!
So he was a wounded man. The absence of his father really messed him up. His brothers were going to be there for him no matter what. This is the book that explains the brothers, relationships and family. I believe this is the beginning and the other books will explain even more. I loved the complexity of this character. Can’t wait to continue on with the rest of the books
Ms. Keys cut ✂️up on this one!!! I am soooooo amazed at the phrases and use of words in this 📚 book. Her talent as a true wordsmith shined thru.
I hate that Aziz was such an asshole!!!! He was so hard to like in the beginning. All that pain and feeling of desertion he carried from his childhood was definitely understandable. I am so glad he got it together but sad that death helped him🥲to get to that point. Diamond was such a sweetheart. I loved her naïveté😂. I still can’t believe she busted it open for him on the first, I can’t even call it a date. 😂😂
I am conflicted about Denim. I feel like Diesel was a constellation prize. I think it was nasty 🤮 yo go from brother to brother!!
Great read and I would love to hear from Junie, he prolly the biggest freak of them all😂🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
I went into this book with blinders on. May I say I loved these brothers. Yes they have a weird complex relationship but the love is there. Ok A Keys you did a great job. I enjoyed the ride you took me on. I definitely recommend reading this book.
Chile I just knew Aziz was never gonna get his act right!! That fool was doing to much holding all that pain in from not having his father around!! But babbbbbbyyyyy these tears really fell when Hansel was murdered!! Just sad but a harsh part of our reality!!
This book gave me all of the emotions and feelings that a great book should. I laughed, cried, got mad, but also very happy. I am throughly happy that I read this in one sitting. I came across this book on TikTok and it was the 1st book I read but I will for sure be reading more books by this author. Thank you for this work of art!
First time reading a book by this author and I am not disappointed at all. The Coalman were all so different and I love it. You had your suspense, romance and drama but it was a enough to keep you wanting more.
I don't like how naive Diamond was, yet I guess if you have this instant connection to someone, you'll do silly and stupid things. Aziz clearly didn't want her, yet she pined for him regardless. He treated her like scum and she still wanted him🤦🏾♀️.
I didn't understand Aziz. He was apparently more like his father than he thought or wanted to be, yet I never got a clear understanding on what his true issue was with his dad. And then for him to take it out on his brother, Diesel was unfair. I'm glad he eventually got it together and changed his ways.
While I understand that they were brothers (Junie, Smoke, Black, Diesel and Aziz), I didn't like the underlying dislike they had and felt like they couldn't speak on it. The each had an issue with Aziz, yet since he was the oldest, they didn't say anything. I'm glad they eventually voiced their thoughts on how disrespectful Aziz was being to their father.
I like that we got to see a glimpse of the brothers and their relationships. I'd love to read more on Black and Jill.
This story held a lot of emotion and was very descriptive, which was very interesting. The whole Hansel situation was very touching. The author did an awesome job of putting you right where she wanted you and the characters to be; I could see the scenes playing out and I always enjoy when authors can do that.
This was a good read. Hope to get more on these characters.
DNF @50%. I'm going to try another book by this author, because I've heard she's really good, but this book was not for me.
Aziz is just so disrespectful. I really dont see how I could even tolerate him by the end. Diamond is dumb dumb, but also inexperienced so i'll let it slide. Denim though is just straight stupid, she should know better. Diesel deserves better. I would prefer to read about Jill and Black. They were cute.
All I can say is Sweet Black Baby Jesus! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It took me longer than it should have to read this but I did cry and laugh reading this. Aziz was hard to love and I think that emotional switch was too sudden but at least there was one and he wasn’t a butthole the entire book.
