Day of the Dawg: A Football Memoir

Rate this book
Popular and outspoken NFL cornerback Hanford Dixon offers an inside look at the turbulent, exciting, and frustrating Cleveland Browns seasons of the 1980s. A three-time Pro Bowler and co-inventor of the Dawg Pound, Dixon recalls both the roller-coaster on-field action and a culture of drug use that permeated the NFL and led to the tragic death of a teammate. He shares in detail … Dixon refers to himself as “a top-notch, speedy, loud-mouth, cocky, shutdown cornerback.” That gives an idea of his outsized personality as well as his willingness to say exactly what he means. He’s not shy about delivering praise or criticism where he thinks it’s due―to teammates, coaches, officials … or himself. This Dawg tells it the way it was.

Dixon's book is exactly what I expected: a nostalgic look back at the career of one of the stars of the Cleveland Browns teams of the 1980s. It's fun to read and look back on the thrills and disappointments of the teams when the Browns were good. Old time Browns fans will enjoy it.

Hanford Dixon provides a firsthand account of the Cleveland Browns during the 1980s. Reading this book brought back of memories of watching the team during the 80s, especially those playoff games which Top Dawg identified as some of his favorite of all time. I enjoyed the candid nature in which Hanford told his stories. However, there were grammatical errors in this book, to the point that I was surprised at how many.

If you loved the Browns in the 80s, this is a must read. Listen, don't read it for some literary experience! Read it to learn more about the team, and especially one of the two outstanding cornerbacks that anchored their defense. And, it's FUNNY. Still can't stop laughing about him calling Terry Bradshaw, Terry Bradshit. LOL.
