Sept garçons
C'est un livre attachant qu'Anne Wiazemsky vient de publier. L'un de ces romans dans lesquels une atmosphère émerge dès les premières pages. D'emblée, on sait que le livre nous conduira au cœur d'une énigme : ici, il s'agit de celle de l'enfance.
Comme le titre Sept garçons ne l'indique pas, l'héroïne est une petite fille (Roséliane) qui, au cours de vacances où sept garçons l'entourent, va découvrir ce qu'il faut appeler sa féminité. Les garçons quant à eux joueront à être de vrais petits hommes : chacun voudra éprouver la demoiselle. Mais dans ces jeux enfantins auxquels les adultes décident de ne jamais se mêler, une curieuse ambiance règne. Il plane un "quelque chose" de grave. Comme si ce moment de l'enfance était le temps où toute la vie future prenait forme. Comme s'il fallait que les risques les plus terribles et les plus déterminants y soient pris. Au fond, à quel moment et pour quelles raisons l'enfance finit-elle ? C'est la question que pose Anne Wiazemsky. Elle y répond d'une manière particulièrement tragique. As an actress, she appeared most notably in Robert Bresson's Au hasard Balthazar (1966) and in the films of Jean-Luc Godard La Chinoise (1967) and Week End (1967). She was married to Godard between 1967 and 1979.
After abandoning her movie career in the late 80s, Wiazemsky began writing critically acclaimed fiction and memoirs. Her 1993 novel Canines was awarded with the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens, while Une poignée des gens, a novel she published in 1996, won the Grand prix du roman of the Academie française.
Some of her books have been adopted into film. All the Fine Promises of Jean-Paul Civeyrac was based on Hymnes à l'Amour, while Michel Hazanavicius adopted her memoir Une anée apres, an account of her relationship with Godard during the protest movement that paralysed France in 1968.
Her 2007 autobiographical novel, Jeune Fille, is based on her experience starring in Au hasard Balthazar at the age of 18.
On her father's side, Wiazemsky was a descendant of a Russian aristocracy that fled Russia after the October Revolution of 1918--the Rurikid family of Princes Vyazemsky-Counts Levashov. Her mother, Claire Mauriac, was the daughter of writer François Mauriac.

Se lit très bien, fin tragique qui ne m’a pas tant touché

It would take me a lot longer to write my review in French but I certainly read it in French, don't think there's a translation available. It was a book club choice and I was the person who loved it whereas some ppl thought it was so so. For me the novel asks two questions: what is it about summer time in ones's childhood that seems to be the closest we get to a genuinely happy time and at what point does this change. I loved the sixties vibe, the south of France and the depiction of women; I think she's good on gender. Some ppl felt the plot line was weak. I enjoyed visualising the characters and the setting, reminded me of how I felt aged 10. I was thinking of having a go at a translation.

Livre touchant sur la jeunesse, l’insouciance et l’été. On change, on grandit, on évolue, on découvre. C’est comme revivre un premier amour, un premier été marquant. La plume était très jolie. Et quelle fin… une tristesse profonde pour tous les gens qui le liront. Une histoire sur les premiers amours, sur l’amitié, sur l’intégration et sur un petit garçon mort trop tôt qui ne grandira plus jamais.
« Et quand on descendit le cercueil dans la tombe, tous savaient qu’un peu de ce qu’ils avaient été, ensemble ou individuellement, s’en allait pour toujours avec Simon. »
