My pet peeve is books that claim to be reading material for beginners when really it is at a B1+ level. The stories are ok, a bit like fairy stories or children's stories, each having some kind of moral. However, there is no vocabulary control or grammar control. The first story is in preterite tense (passé simple), which is normally taught a lot later. The second is in present tense. There are glossaries and exercises. As I often see, some of the glossaries annoyingly translate an exact cognate to itself (provisions = provisions), while ignoring other words that would be worth translating. Why?!!!! I do not understand the logic of the selected words, or why the authors say that they are the ones that should be learnt. It all seems pretty random.
If you really want stories for beginners, there are many good options. There's Gnomeville, which starts from zero French, or there are the many TPRS-based reading books, which have small vocabularies. Then after that there are offerings from various publishers and independent authors, which are aimed at A1 level and upwards.
Positives: I like the comprehension questions and key vocabulary at the end of each story. The stories were interesting and were a good length.
Negatives: Maybe the stories are too advanced for beginners. The key vocabulary could have been put at the story's beginning rather than the end. This would make the stories easier to read.
