Émile Gaboriau

The book, which was Gaboriau's first detective novel, introduced an amateur detective. It also introduced a young police officer named Monsieur Lecoq, who was the hero in three of Gaboriau's later detective novels. The character of Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned police officer, Eugène François Vidocq (1775–1857), whose own memoirs, Les Vrais Mémoires de Vidocq, mixed fiction and fact. It may also have been influenced by the villainous Monsieur Lecoq, one of the main protagonists of Féval's Les Habits Noirs book series.
The book was published in "Le Siècle" and at once made his reputation. Gaboriau gained a huge following, but when Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, Monsieur Lecoq's international fame declined. The story was produced on the stage in 1872. A long series of novels dealing with the annals of the police court followed, and proved very popular. Gaboriau died in Paris of pulmonary apoplexy.
Gaboriau's books were generally well received. About the Mystery of the Orcival, Harper's wrote in 1872 "Of its class of romance - French sensational - this is a remarkable and unique specimen". A film version of Le Dossier n° 113 (File No. 113) was released in 1932.

No importa que Sherlock Holmes dijera que el agente Lecoq era 'un chapucero indecoroso que solo tenía una cualidad recomendable: su energía. [...] Yo habría sido capaz de conseguirlo [la resolución de un caso] en veinticuatro horas. A Lecoq le llevó cosa de seis meses. Podría servir de texto para enseñar a los detectives qué es lo que no deben hacer.', honestamente Lecoq es de los detectives más down-to-earth y prácticos que he visto entre todas las novelas policiacas que he leído.
En El crimen de Orcival la cuestión es clara: una mujer ha sido asesinada y encontrada por un par de cazadores a la orilla de un río, quienes alertan del hallazgo al alcalde del pueblo, y quien junto con un clérigo y un juez se dirigen a la escena del crimen para saber qué es lo que ha sucedido. El agente Lecoq, por otro lado, será introducido al lector una vez sepamos cómo se halla la escena y quiénes son las posibles víctimas.
Como ya he dicho, Lecoq tiene una intuición y una capacidad de resolver el caso que no es para nada extraordinaria, sino más bien te pone al nivel de él para entender qué es lo que ha pasado en la escena del crimen. El problema que tuve aquí —y diría que es el único 'pero' que le pongo a la novela en general— es que el caso y su resolución son muy, muy predecibles (terminado el capítulo 4 ya sabía la respuesta y no me equivoqué, con eso les digo todo), tanto por quién o quiénes son los culpables y cómo fue que lo hizo/hicieron dadas las circunstancias que tenemos delante. La ventaja, por otro lado, es que el caso se resuelve en los primeros diez capítulos y después comienza una segunda parte (no explícita) donde nos adentramos al pasado de los personajes involucrados a lo Wilkie Collins (si ustedes me permiten, yo diría que El crimen de Orcival es una novela sensacionalista más que una novela de detectives) que si han leído al autor inglés, ya saben a lo que me refiero: engaños, asesinatos, dobles apariencias, deudas, intriga, y mucho, mucho drama; una telenovela en pocas palabras.
Posteriormente, y la tercera y última parte, regresamos al presente de la mano del detective Lecoq quien, junto con un número de personajes, idearán un plan para darle solución al caso y atrapar a los responsables, todo de una manera muy dinámica y en la que no podrás parar de leer hasta el final (a pesar de que desde el capítulo 10 sabes quién lo hizo).
Émile Gaboriau es un pionero en lo que a la novela de detectives se refiere, y vaya que lo hace muy bien; una novela que explora a sus personajes, donde los principales se desarrollan a lo largo del relato y que si bien no se enfoca principalmente en la resolución del crimen, si no más bien en el por qué se llevó a cabo, jamás se vuelve una historia aburrida o tediosa. Por supuesto, la recomiendo mucho para quien esté más interesado en leer un drama —muy bien escrito— con tintes policiacos y no al revés.

Su larga cabellera suelta se desparramaba entre las hierbas acuáticas; su vestido de seda gris estaba desgarrado y manchado de fango y sangre. Valami kiárusításon találtam, száz forintért vesztegették, úgy voltam vele, hogy retro krimi, jó minőségű kiadásban, jöhet. Fogalmam nem volt, hogy egyrészt ennyire retro (1867-ben jelent meg először, két évtizeddel az első Sherlock Holmes-sztori előtt), másrészt hogy miért tisztelte meg a hatvanas években keménytáblás kiadással az az Európa-kiadó, amely a krimiket rendszerint kisebb presztízsű (és puhatáblás) sorozatban jelentette meg. Azért, mert ez nemcsak krimi. Mégis alig tudtam letenni.
Hogy ki a gyilkos, azt a bűntett helyszínének feltérképezésekor már sejteni lehet, a könyv harmadánál a detektív is kimondja, nagy meglepetés ebből a szempontból senkit nem fog érni. De az a fajta detektívtörténet ez, amelyikben a "ki?"-nél sokkal fontosabb kérdés a "miért?" És akkor kap az olvasó egy Bovaryné-szerű, bonyolult históriát házasságról, házasságtörésről, unalomról, gyengeségről és hidegvérű bosszúról. Egy "mesét a mesében", egy lélektani betétregényt, a XIX. század második felének francia társadalmának rajzával együtt. Aki nem szereti a realizmust mint stílusirányzatot, annak nem fog tetszeni. Én ezt találtam benne igazán izgalmasnak.
Persze a főszereplő detektív, azaz Lecoq felügyelő is tetszik, ez a "hiányzó láncszem" Auguste Dupin és Sherlock Holmes között. Alakváltó (nem, ez nem fantasy, ez színészet :)) sportember, aki a legelőkelőbb körökben és az alvilágban egyaránt kiismeri magát, mindenkinek a veséjébe lát, és humora is van. Tetszetős figura, kicsit sok is nekem, nem véletlenül vettek vissza egy kicsit a tökéletességéből a későbbi írónemzedékek. A módszere is érdekes: ujjlenyomatnak még híre sincs, DNS-vizsgálatnak pláne, ettől azonban egyáltalán nem kevésbé tudományos. Az pedig igen bájos, ahogyan a bűnügyet az 1860-as évek közvéleménye elé tárják. Mit mondjak, alacsonyabban volt az ingerküszöb. Ez nem azt jelenti, hogy a bűnügy unalmas, hanem azt, hogy az elbeszélésmódon sokkal erősebben érzékelhető a felháborodás és elborzadás. Szégyellheti magát az utókor.
De ez mind ügyes elmejáték lenne egy kismestertől, ha nem volna ott a "miért?" Az a bizonyos realista kisregény az aprólékosan megjelenített jellemrajzaival. Meg a korszak Párizsával, amelynek hétköznapi életéről szintén meg lehet tudni egy csomó érdekes dolgot. Nem egy Flaubert, az biztos, de Flaubert mögött másodvonalba kerülni se szégyen.

I found it at a sale of second-hand books, in an 1960s hardcover edition, sold for next to nothing. I said all right, I like retro detective stories anyway. I had no idea it was really so old (published in 1867 for the first time, two decades before the first Sherlock Holmes stories). How was I to know why the publishing company showed such respect to a detective story, fashionable but not too prestigious at all in the Hungary of the 1960s? It did because this is not only a detective story. Yet I found it hard to put down.
It's not really a whodunit. It's more of a whydunit. You can begin to suspect who the murderer is right at the beginning of the detective work. At about the third of the book, the detective confirms those suspicions. No surprises. And then, without any warning, the reader gets another story within the story. Another novel, somewhat like Madame Bovary, a story of marriage, adultery, boredom, weakness and cold-blooded revenge. A psychological novel, with an added comedy of manners about France in the second half of the 19th century. A must for those who like realism.
Of course I like Inspector Lecoq, the protagonist, the missing link between Auguste Dupin and Sherlock Holmes. But to me, he is too much. A master-actor and a sportsman who knows his way in both the highest and the lowest circles, sees to the dephts of everyone's soul and even has a sense of humour. No wonder the story-writers of later periods made their detective figures less perfect. His scientific method (without fingerprints and DNA) is equally interesting to see. And there's no better word than "charming" to describe the way the crime is shown to the contemporary readers. Their nervous system needed much less stimulus than ours, to say the least. Which doesn't mean the description of the crime is boring. Rather it means that everyone looking at the result is much more outraged, horrified, much more emotional than what we experience nowadays. Shame on us.
But that would all be a mere mind-game by a minor author without the question "why?" Which makes Gaboriau write the other story of fully detailed characters, against the backdrop of the everyday life of his age. Gaboriau is no Flaubert. But why would it be a shame to come in second after a master like Flaubert?

Una historia muy bien ambientada, llena de personajes interesantes y con un protagonista muy curioso.
La descripción del caso está bien llevada, las deducciones, las pistas, los posibles móviles y todo ello converge en el final. La resolución del caso no me ha sorprendido, pero hay que destacar la cantidad de detalles y matices que esconde la narración.El señor Lecoq hace bien llamándose el primer detective de la historia.
Con sabor a clásico.

Before there was Sherlock Holmes, there was Monsieur LeCoq, and this is of one his starring turns. This was written long before the elements of mystery genre writing was developed, so this does not follow the path of mystery writing that modern mystery fans would recognize. It took me a while to get into it, but then I stopped thinking and started to just enjoy the chase, as the whodunit is solved about a third of the way through the book, but the question of whether the suspect will be caught isn't resolved until almost the last page. I guess there's nothing quite like a late 19th century French potboiler!

It was slow going at first but I did like it and I actually found my self reading it late at night to finish it and see the ending..

To 1841 υπήξε χρονιά σταθμός. Τότε γράφτηκαν απ’ τον Πόε, οι Δολοφονίες της οδού Μοργκ και διευρύνθηκε ουσιαστικά ο τρόπος που ένας καλλιτέχνης μπορεί να ψυχαγωγήσει με ένα όχημα το οποίο έχει τη δυνατότητα να παρέχει περισσότερες διεξόδους για τον κοινωνικό σχολιασμό και προβληματισμού στο δημιουργό του. Ήταν η αρχή ώστε μέσα σε μια εικοσιπενταετία να γεννηθούν τα φαινόμενα Κόλλινς και Γκαμποριώ, που μετεξέλιξαν το είδος. Το οποίο έκαναν συνολικά. Το ψυχαγωγικό μέρος δεν ήταν υποτυπώδες, αλλά αναπτύχθηκε σε βάθος, με πολλά ευρήματα κι ατμοσφαιρικότητα και παράλληλα η εντόπιση κοινωνικών σκαλωμάτων, τέτοιων που να απαιτούν μια δυναμική ανάδειξη επιτεύχθηκε στο μεγαλύτερο δυνατό βαθμό. Το είδος βέβαια στα επόμενα χρόνια εξελίχθηκε ακόμα περισσότερο στο κομμάτι της ψυχαγωγίας με άλλους συγγραφείς. Αυτοί όμως ήταν οι πρώτοι που το ανέπτυξαν συνολικά. Θα ακολουθούσαν βέβαια μέσα στα χρόνια συγγραφείς σαν το Ντόϋλ και την Κρίστι που το ανέπτυξαν κατά βάση ψυχαγωγικά και συγγραφείς σαν τον Τσέστερτον που δημιούργησαν μία βάση πειστική, που τους επέτρεψε με ελεύθερα χέρια να ασχοληθούν κατά βάση με την κοινωνία.
Το Έγκλημα στο Όρσιβαλ παρουσιάζει πολύ μεγάλες καινοτομίες για την εποχή του, αξιοζήλευτες. Ενώ ο Κόλλινς είχε τη θαυμαστά αξιοσημείωτη ικανότητα να ντύνεται μέσα στους ρόλους και να σε πείθει πως μιλάνε άτομα απ’ όλες τις κοινωνικές ομάδες, άντρες, γυναίκες κλπ ο Γκαμποριώ παρουσιάζει μια άλλη ιδιότητα εξ’ ίσου ενδιαφέρουσα. Είναι ο μικρός θεός της παρομοίωσης και του παραλληλισμού. Καθετί μεταφράζεται κάπως, ταιριάζει με κάτι, θυμίζει κάτι και με μεγάλη ακρίβεια και στυλιστική δεινότητα τα εντοπίζει και με λόγο άλλοτε ποιητικό, άλλοτε συγκρατημένα κυνικό, σαρκαστικό, ή θαυμαστικό τα κρυσταλλώνει.
Το βασικό κατηγορώ του συγγραφέα γύρω απ’ το οποίο αναπτύσσονται όλοι οι υπόλοιποι προβληματισμοί του είναι η κραυγαλέα ενοχλητική δύναμη της κοινής γνώμης, ικανή ��α επηρεάσει στον ίδιο βαθμό την κοκότα, το δημόσιο υπάλληλο και τον αριστοκράτη. Ισχυροποιείται μάλιστα ακόμα περισσότερο όσο πιο επισφαλή είναι τα παραβάν εκείνα που αναπτύσσουμε ως ενδιαφέροντα, για να μοιάζει λιγότερο επίπεδη η ζωή.
Παράλληλα όμως είναι μια γοητευτικά δοσμένη αστυνομική ιστορία, χωρίς ιδιαίτερα ψεγάδια που μιλάει έντονα εγκεφαλικά στον αναγνώστη, τον πείθει για την αληθοφάνεια της κι ας μην καταφέρνει να κάνει κανένα χαρακτήρα ιδιαίτερα αγαπητό, ενώ επιτυγχάνει να τέμνει διαρκώς τις όψεις που παρουσιάζει και να τους δομεί με μεγάλο ρεαλισμό και στην ουσία τους. Και επίσης, ο Λεκόκ έχει κάνει ένα άλμα κι έχει εξελιχθεί από ‘’γκρούπι’’ του Ταμπαρέ σε μέγα μάγιστρο ντετέκτιβ. Είναι ενδιαφέρων, φρέσκος, μάγος των μεταμφιέσεων και όλα είναι κατανοητά δοσμένα ώστε να γίνονται αντιληπτά απ’ τον κοινό νου και να μη θυμίζει καθόλου το Σέρλοκ που εντόπιζε από πού ήταν κάποιος, ή τι έφαγε το μεσημέρι από στοιχεία που δεν παρουσιάζονταν στον αναγνώστη, δεν εμφανίζονταν στην εικόνα, παρά μόνο ως ευρήματα που απεκάλυπτε ο Χολμς. Απ’ αυτή την άποψη είναι πολύ περισσότερο συγγενής ο Πουαρώ. Αλλά όμως, ο Λεκόκ παραμένει ένας χαρακτήρας χωρίς ιδιαίτερα κοινωνικά ψεγάδια, αλλά ούτε κι αξιοσημείωτες αρετές που μας κάνουν να αγαπούμε πολλούς σύγχρονους ντετέκτιβ που μας πείθουν ως ανθρώπινοι χαρακτήρες.
Ο Έξαντας βρίσκεται σε καλό δρόμο ώστε να θεωρείται αξιόπιστος, παρόλ’ αυτά όμως κι ενώ ήδη έχω διαβάσει το βιογραφικό σημείωμα του μεταφραστή, δε μπορώ να συγχωρέσω ή να αποδεχτώ λέξεις κι εκφράσεις όπως ‘’τρελαμένος’’, ‘’όλα τα λεφτά’’ κλπ. Είναι ένα φινίρισμα που επί Κοτζιά δύσκολο να συναντούσαμε.
Στοιχεία τέλος που κάνουν το Γκαμποριώ να ξεχωρίζει είναι πως παραμένει πιστός στο κοινωνικό μυθιστόρημα και μαζί με πολύ μεγαλύτερη συνέπεια αναλαμβάνει το ρόλο, να ‘’μην είναι ευγενικός’’ σε κάποιες περιγραφές όπως ο Μπαλζάκ, αλλά να ‘’μην είναι θρασύς’’ όπως ο Σαντ. Χειρίζεται το νυστέρι της κοινωνικής συνάφειας με ακρίβεια, χωρίς να το σηκώνει ή να σταματά κατά διαστήματα και αφήνοντας ως ένα βαθμό ορισμένα πράγματα, ανείπωτα.
Η ιστορία ήταν πολύ διασκεδαστική, πειστική, με διαλόγους αρκετά αληθοφανείς κι ατμοσφαιρικότητα. Τράβηξε ελάχιστα παραπάνω απ’ όσο χρειαζόταν, το οποίο όμως ήταν εν μέρει κουραστικό. Και μεγαλύτερο του επίτευγμα παραμένει πως η ανάγκη να ανήκουμε διαρκώς δίνει μάχες με την αλήθεια και την ηθική.

Το Έγκλημα στο Όρσιβαλ παρουσιάζει πολύ μεγάλες καινοτομίες για την εποχή του, αξιοζήλευτες. Ενώ ο Κόλλινς είχε τη θαυμαστά αξιοσημείωτη ικανότητα να ντύνεται μέσα στους ρόλους και να σε πείθει πως μιλάνε άτομα απ’ όλες τις κοινωνικές ομάδες, άντρες, γυναίκες κλπ ο Γκαμποριώ παρουσιάζει μια άλλη ιδιότητα εξ’ ίσου ενδιαφέρουσα. Είναι ο μικρός θεός της παρομοίωσης και του παραλληλισμού. Καθετί μεταφράζεται κάπως, ταιριάζει με κάτι, θυμίζει κάτι και με μεγάλη ακρίβεια και στυλιστική δεινότητα τα εντοπίζει και με λόγο άλλοτε ποιητικό, άλλοτε συγκρατημένα κυνικό, σαρκαστικό, ή θαυμαστικό τα κρυσταλλώνει.
Το βασικό κατηγορώ του συγγραφέα γύρω απ’ το οποίο αναπτύσσονται όλοι οι υπόλοιποι προβληματισμοί του είναι η κραυγαλέα ενοχλητική δύναμη της κοινής γνώμης, ικανή ��α επηρεάσει στον ίδιο βαθμό την κοκότα, το δημόσιο υπάλληλο και τον αριστοκράτη. Ισχυροποιείται μάλιστα ακόμα περισσότερο όσο πιο επισφαλή είναι τα παραβάν εκείνα που αναπτύσσουμε ως ενδιαφέροντα, για να μοιάζει λιγότερο επίπεδη η ζωή.
Παράλληλα όμως είναι μια γοητευτικά δοσμένη αστυνομική ιστορία, χωρίς ιδιαίτερα ψεγάδια που μιλάει έντονα εγκεφαλικά στον αναγνώστη, τον πείθει για την αληθοφάνεια της κι ας μην καταφέρνει να κάνει κανένα χαρακτήρα ιδιαίτερα αγαπητό, ενώ επιτυγχάνει να τέμνει διαρκώς τις όψεις που παρουσιάζει και να τους δομεί με μεγάλο ρεαλισμό και στην ουσία τους. Και επίσης, ο Λεκόκ έχει κάνει ένα άλμα κι έχει εξελιχθεί από ‘’γκρούπι’’ του Ταμπαρέ σε μέγα μάγιστρο ντετέκτιβ. Είναι ενδιαφέρων, φρέσκος, μάγος των μεταμφιέσεων και όλα είναι κατανοητά δοσμένα ώστε να γίνονται αντιληπτά απ’ τον κοινό νου και να μη θυμίζει καθόλου το Σέρλοκ που εντόπιζε από πού ήταν κάποιος, ή τι έφαγε το μεσημέρι από στοιχεία που δεν παρουσιάζονταν στον αναγνώστη, δεν εμφανίζονταν στην εικόνα, παρά μόνο ως ευρήματα που απεκάλυπτε ο Χολμς. Απ’ αυτή την άποψη είναι πολύ περισσότερο συγγενής ο Πουαρώ. Αλλά όμως, ο Λεκόκ παραμένει ένας χαρακτήρας χωρίς ιδιαίτερα κοινωνικά ψεγάδια, αλλά ούτε κι αξιοσημείωτες αρετές που μας κάνουν να αγαπούμε πολλούς σύγχρονους ντετέκτιβ που μας πείθουν ως ανθρώπινοι χαρακτήρες.

Der zweite Gaboriau und erste echte Fall für den sagenhaften Ermittler und Verkleidungskünstler LeCoq ist so etwas wie der erste echte Krimi der Reihe, die LeRouge-Affaire begann zwar auch mit einem rätselhaften Mord, war aber in der Ausführung eher ein Gesellschafts- oder Sozialroman in der Nachfolge von Balzac und Eugéne Sué, in der das Ermittlergenie nur für eine Tatortbesichtigung in Erscheinung trat. Parallele zum ersten Fall ist ein allzu schnell gefundener Hauptverdächtiger.
Die Lösung liegt deutlich früher auf der Hand, wie auch im Nachfolger Aktenfaszikel 113 geht es nach gut einem Drittel für ziemlich lange Zeit um die Vorgeschichte des aktuellen Mordfalls, in deren Verlauf weitere Leichen zu Tage gefördert werden. Für Leser, die gern bis ins allerletzte Kapitel im Ungewissen bleiben wollen, sind Gaboriaus Romane nichts, bis zum Showdown liefert 'The Mystery of Orcival die Chronik eines großkotzigen Prassers, der aber zur feige über die letzte große Geste ist und mehrfach beim Versuch scheitert, sich das Licht auszublasen. . Ein enormes Geflecht von Dreiecksverhältnissen mit tödlicher Eifersüchtelei und Versuchen die eigene Position vor dem örtlichen Klatsch zu schützen

Rätselfreunde und Liebhaber von atemloser Spannung kommen hier sicherlich nicht auf ihre Kosten, trotz zahlreicher Schritte in Richtung Krimi ist 'The Mystery of Orcival nach der Tatortbegehung eher ein Ehe- und Eifersuchtsroman mit einer ziemlich vertrackten Motivation, dessen Auflösungspotenzial in den folgenden 150 Jahren noch oft wiederholt wurde, zumeist nicht auf höherem Niveau.

A surprisingly good read: I set out to read a museum piece and found myself reading a nicely-translated, well-paced detective story that plays by all the rules of the 20th Century mystery and it blessed with well-drawn characters. There are three parts to the story and initially I found myself put off by the change of pace in the second part. That was soon overcome: as a story within a story it holds itself well and its importance in the bigger story becomes apparent.

Más allá del debate sobre si las obras del autor fueron o no las primeras consideradas como policíacas, es un libro al que no recuerdo cómo llegué, pero que me ha mantenido en vilo en los 3-4 días que he tardado en leerlo.
Personalmente, me sorprende que un libro de 1865 pueda estar tan bien escrito, con narraciones de muy alto nivel... aunque si te paras a pensar en que las” series policíacas “ de la época tenían su entrega por entregas en los periódicos (en lugar de por televisión, o ya por Netflix, HBO, etc.), entonces cobra sentido.
Libro muy recomendable. Ya estoy pidiendo el primero, el caso Lerouge, para ver cómo se formó nuestro amigo Lecoq.

Cuốn này làm mình ngạc nhiên thật sự - cuốn hay nhất trong 3 cuốn về thanh tra Lecoq. Mới đầu đọc mình cứ nghĩ lại viết kiểu kể lể các backstory nhân vật không có suy luận gì nhưng mà KHÔNG, trời ơi, điều mà ở Hồ sơ số 113 và Vụ án Lerouge không làm được thì ở cuốn này đã làm được, đó là thể hiện được KHẢ NĂNG PHÁ ÁN SUY LUẬN TÀI TÌNH CỦA LECOQ. Chia tạm cuốn này làm 3 phần, trong đó phần đầu và phần cuối hoàn toàn là Lecoq chiếm spotlight, đưa ra những suy luận logic có căn cứ dựa vào những quan sát và bộ óc liên kết của mình. Ông hành động chặt chẽ, triệt để và rất coi trọng công lý, nhưng không kém nhân văn tình người. Phần hai là phần kể backstory của các nhân vật liên quan để người đọc hiểu hơn về vai trò và động cơ của các nhân vật trong vụ án mạng này. Phần 3 đặc biệt hấp dẫn còn ở chỗ Lecoq chỉ đạo các hành động cần thực thi tiếp theo để bắt quả tang thủ phạm. Mình chỉ không thích nhất cái sự mềm yếu của ông thẩm phán hoà giải tự dưng làm phá vỡ quan điểm đưa thủ phạm ra ánh sáng chỉ vì ông thẩm phán này vô tình yêu cô gái bị bất đắc dĩ lôi vào tội ác này.

Wow! What a great mystery book!
When I first prepared to read this book, I noticed my copy was printed in 1903! Then I saw it was originally published in 1871. It was translated from the French of Emile Gaboriau and published in English by Scribner's. For a comparison, A Study in Scarlet was published in 1887.
So this is a very early mystery novel, set mostly in the little French town of Orcival, and partly in Paris.
When I read the first chapter I thought, Oh, I have this all figured out. But the book went on. The characters became more clear. More events happened. It was really a good mystery novel, and I enjoyed it a lot.
For those who like an historical setting, this book which was written as a contemporary novel, provides that with absolute accuracy.

Monsieur Lecoq is the creation of Emile Gaboriau, just like Sherlock Holmes is for Conan Doyle and Hercule Poirot for Agatha Christie. Lecoq was created well before anyone had heard of Sherlock, infact it is a known fact that Doyle drew inspiration for Sherlock's character from Lecoq. The methodically, scientific manner in which Lecoq solves crimes is interesting to read, along with the ruthlessness of his conduct in some instances. It is fascination to read how crimes were solved back in the 1800s without the means of DNA testing or fingerprint technology etc. I had downloaded the book from Project Gutenberg a while back, but once I started reading, it was hard to keep away...

I like these types of detectives way way way more than Sherlock Holmes.
I enjoy the gathering of clues, the deduction, the thinking, its way more fun for me than Sherlock coming out of nowhere saying that he knows everything because the mud was salty and then a rushed explanation towards the end.
Such a good book, had so much fun, it was quite lenghty as a audiobook but it was ok, I wasnt bored. I did think the whole part of the manuscript was a bit too much (as in it didnt read as a manuscript since it knew eveeeeeeerything) but other than that its quite a nice detective story.

Una de las primeras novelas policíacas de la historia con un detective protagonista que desentraña el misterio a través de métodos deductivos, publicada dos décadas antes del primer Holmes.
A ojos del lector actual puede resultar ingenua, pero no deja de ser un interesante retrato de una época pasada cargada de hipocresía en la que las apariencias lo eran todo.

Maravillosa historia de crimen y venganza. A pesar de que el peso del drama romántico es grande, la intencionalidad de la obra es la de narrar la investigación policíaca por encima de todo. Lecoq se convierte aquí en un investigador astuto y muy profesional. Sabe leer las pistas de una forma metódica y astuta. Un magnífico personaje para una novela extraordinaria.

Công nhận đây là cuốn hay nhất trong mấy cuốn đã đọc của Émile Gaboriau. Cấu trúc khá giống với Hồ sơ vụ án 113 cơ mà phần truyện không bị quá dài dòng, và đọc rất thỏa mãn, đặc biệt là đoạn Sauvresy trả thù 👌. Tuy một số điểm khá là dễ đoán trước, nhưng tựu chung lại là 5⭐.

Một tác phẩm trinh thám hay, đòi hỏi tính kiên nhẫn khi đọc. Câu chuyện được kể dựa trên dòng hồi tưởng về một tội ác trong quá khứ liên quan đến hiện tại.
Vì được viết vào khoảng năm 1870 nên cốt truyện có phần hơi xưa cũ, nhưng ngược lại thì câu chuyện vẫn rất hay và hấp dẫn.

So với hồ sơ 113 thì tội ác ở Orcival động cơ vẫn xoay quanh những tình yêu, hận thù nhưng phức tạp hơn hẳn. Tội ác cũng thâm độc hơn khiến người đọc phải rùng mình. Lecoq có nhiều đất để thể hiện tài năng suy luận hơn, khéo léo giải quyết vụ án và trừng trị kẻ thủ ác đích đáng.

Novela policiaca de investigación con método deductivo. El policía protagonista es auténtico, amante de los disfraces, listo, excéntrico y divertido😂. Parece ser que sirvió de Inspiración para Sherlock Holmes.
Es una obra original tanto por la psicología de los personajes como por su narración (parte de la trama se cuenta a partir de unos escritos). Me gustaría leer más a este autor.

El escritor y periodista Émile Gaboriau con su novela El caso Lerouge (1866), ostenta junto con el casi anónimo Charles Warren Adams autor -o al menos hasta ahora así está reconocido-, de El misterio de Notting Hill (1863) y a Wilkie Collins con La piedra lunar (1868) -y próxima reseña-, como los creadores de la novela de detectives. Si a esto añadimos que Émile Gaboriau se distingue especialmente gracias a El crimen de Orcival (1866) por ser también el precursor del roman policier -novela policiaca-, y por crear al primer policía profesional de la literatura al incluir en El crimen de Orcival al inspector Lecoq de la Sûreté de París, podremos tener una visión más completa del inicio de la novela criminal.

M. Lecoq in fine form, with Gaboriau's distaste of the upper class and their empty love affairs readily evident. Lots of science in this one, nothing better really than mid-1800's forensics and crime scene examination to make you wince a little while being nonetheless impressed.
Comparatively a workhorse of a detective novel, but M. Lecoq is a damned gem and really gets to ham it up in disguise.

Leído entre enero y febrero de 2017. Se trata del primer caso del inspector literario francés Lecoq y destacaría los primeros y últimos capítulos. Son los que más he disfrutado. Los centrales me han parecido lentos. A pesar de esto, "El crimen de Orcival" es una novela para leer con tranquilidad y disfrutar de cada una de sus palabras. The value of this Gaboriau's work decreases after the first because to me it felt too much of a repetition. Blue blood scandal. And it just so happens that the detective or in this case somebody close to the detective is kinda involve in the scandal and able to reveal it to the detective and the reader. So to me, doesn't feel like an awesome detective work.

I read this as it was the second book in a detective / murder series with a strong lead detective. It was written in 1867. Detective LeCoq is a gatherer of technical details and an actor who uses different disguises to obtain information and solve the crime. I see strong similarities between LeCoq, Holmes, Cinq-Mars, Gamache and Poirot. And it had a strong plot. I will read the next one.
