Space Mission Engineering: The New SMAD

Rate this book
Space Mission New SMAD is an entirely new approach to creating both a text and a practical engineering reference for space mission design. Just as space technology has advanced, the way we learn and work has changed dramatically in recent years. SME combines the best features of a traditional unified text and reference covering the entire field, an electronic version that does many of the calculations for you, and the web that allows regular updates and references to the vast literature base available online. Among the many features of this new approach Completely rewritten, updated, and expanded follow-on to the 3rd edition of Space Mission Analysis and Design, the most widely used text and reference in astronautics, covering a great many topics not previously covered, such as CubeSats, Inflatable Structures, Space Economics, End-of-Mission options, Space System Risk Analysis, and new, much more precise formulas for ground station and target coverage. Downloadable electronic spreadsheets for most of the numerical tables and plots in the book that let you, for example, calculate all of the critical parameters for orbits about the Sun, Moon, Earth, and any of the other planets, or even new planets, moons, or stars of your choosing. An annotated bibliography and references on the web that is updated as new references become available and that shows you where to get nearly all of the references with direct links for those available at no cost and where on the web to buy copyright books and professional papers not available for free. All of the cross referencing, careful definitions, and thoroughly explained equations that are the key ingredient of any high quality engineering text or reference, along with the wisdom and experience gained at substantial cost by some of most experienced and knowledgeable space system engineers in the world. I was reading and working from the new SMAD for the Space Mission Systems Engineering course I took through UCLA Extension. Some nice new information on small spacecraft and reducing the cost of space programs, but the book seems overly long.

Great resource for any Space Systems Engineer, or any engineer in the space domain, for that matter. Covers most topics very well, and provides a lot of interesting information to students and professionals alike.

Wow... this was definitely a dense one! I read 75% of it as required (and supplemental reading) for two different Master's courses that I'm now finishing up. Not a light read and not something I'll be recommending to my friends, but incredibly insightful and well-written in a way that helps get the necessary content across. There's even some whimsical pieces thrown in as well, which made some of the more dry sections a bit more manageable. 4/5 for those that are in the field or interested in it... Maybe a 2/5 for someone not pursuing Space Systems Engineering.

Starting to get dated, the space industry moves so fast, but still a must have resource for anyone in the field.

Section 1.3.1: Getting To Space Is Really Hard
"To get to Low Earth Orbit, we need to go up about 200km, turn left, and accelerate to 7.8 km/s."

Some of SMAD is collegial and funny; some is dry as toast and written for engineers, some is in the middle. All of it is interesting but it is a little erratic.
