Passed to me by a coworker who had visited the island, and picked up the book. Always good to read about others' lives and this was no exception. Would have appreciated a more coherent structure, but the introduction said upfront that the author kept the rambling cadence of the stories so that you get a feel as a reader for Makia's personality, and it definitely worked. By the end of the book, I was a bit sad to say goodbye!

Fabulous! I very much appreciate that Maika’s voice was captured so well. I loved the pattern of the book and the honoring of Pidgin. Though it’s a terribly sad experience, those who experienced Hansen’s disease personally or through loved ones, this book honors those stories. Those lives, those bodies taken apart. I’ve been to Moloka'i and I felt connected to the land through his lens.
I couldn’t put the book down and his story left me smiling.
