The Great and the Gracious on Millionaire's Row: Lake George in its Glory

Rate this book
The families that are represented in The Great and the Gracious had impressive credentials. Included in their number were philanthropists, opera singers, artists, scientists, sportsmen, publishers, financiers, and occasionally a spectacular lawbreaker - all of national and some of international reputation. Lavishly illustrated with historic photos, the reader will delight in these tales.

I read this book I had purchased years ago in anticipation of this year's vacation in Lake George. Every year we take a ride on the steamboat cruised Minne-Ha-Ha (Lake George Steamship Company). On the cruise, the captain gives a narrative of the area including those famous people who inhabited the very expensive homes on Millionaires' Row. Some names you might recognize: Georgia O'Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz (who were a couple), and Alfred Ochs, publisher of the New York Times.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and my most recent trip to Lake George.

This book traces the roots of a great many varied people who inhabit the town that I live in, it depicts many wonderful scenes from what was called Millionaires Row along the shores of Lake George, NY.

Beautiful historic photos that show an era that once was.

Lake George was a bustling town with many rich and powerful people living there and building mansions. It is a beautiful area of the state and it is interesting to realize that the rich wanted a part of this for themselves.
