Section 8 #3

Irreplaceable: A Section 8 Novel by Stephanie Tyler

Rate this book
From New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Tyler, the Section 8 series continues...WHEN THE RISKS ARE THIS GREAT… When Dr. Drea Timmons was kidnapped during Section 8’s last mission, Jem did everything in his power to rescue the woman he’d fallen for—a woman unwillingly recruited for one of S8’s most personal and dangerous covert operations. Drea survived, but at a price. The trauma of her capture has rendered her without a single memory of her ordeal—or any recollection of how violently unpredictable her ex-boyfriend, Danny, an Outlaw Angel, had become, or why she had left him. IS TRUST EVEN AN OPTION? When Danny threatens to turn Drea over to the feds, she is forced to go on the run and confront a past that is as deadly as her future. As trouble closes in on both ends, Drea has no choice but to trust Jem, the only man who can help her, the only man whose electrifying touch brings back memories—piece by piece—too stirring to forget.

Dr. Drea Timmons is forced to go on the run and confront a past that is as deadly as her future and with trouble closing in on both ends she has no choice but to trust the Section 8 team and Jem in particular in this thrilling romantic suspense.

There is never a dull moment in this fast paced and smooth flowing plot full of suspense, action and romance. The reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Drea struggles to remember her past which includes Jem and to convince him that despite everything she does love him and will stay by him. There’s certainly no problem in the attraction area of their relationship as it burns hot and steamy but Jem has emotional turmoil that leads him to believe that he is too crazy for someone like Drea and well since Drea has her own emotional issues, she’s not to accepting of Jem’s version of himself.

The well written scenes and details draw the reader into the story with well orchestrated suspense and action and spine tingling anticipation builds with lots of danger and excitement. Drea’s violent ex is trying to frame her to get out of his own trouble and Section 8’s newest mission has them rescuing a kidnapped girl and the mission has a few hiccups that results in lots of tense moments and a yacht explosion that brings the FBI to their door and leads Drea right back into the middle of the conflict with her ex.

Like I said lots of excitement going on in this thrilling and complex romance that grabs readers attention from the very beginning with strong compelling characters that capture the heart of the readers and ensure that they want to know more and the fact that they all have a past that unites them adds lots of depth and spice to the story. I was completely caught up from the very beginning and I can’t wait to read the next exciting Section 8 mission.

Quickie Review:
I really LOVE the concept of the series/book. Enjoyed the heck out of the characters. The action. The romance. The team. All very nice. My big issue is it went on too long. About 90 pages out I was ready for things to wind up and it dragged a bit for me from there on out. Good all together and in the end I'm ready for more from the series but it started to feel more like a transition read that was setting future things up instead of the romance/in the moment story.

Full Review:

Oooos sexy fun! This was my first time venturing into the Section 8 series and gah, yeah, sexy good times *nods slowly* as a group of mercenaries throw themselves into danger to save and protect those in trouble. Romance, suspense, incredible chemistry...Fragmented really had it all.

Quick of it is that a bit back Jem kinda sorta kidnapped Drea (he's a good guy. Swear!) when he and his team desperately needed a doctor. And they got close but a mission went bad and she ended up hurt and losing her memory. Yeah. And now her life is in danger from a scummy ex that's trying to frame her for all kinds of nasty and she's got to put her trust in a team she "knows" but can't remember. It's intense and nerve-wracking and so so good.

LOVED these two. They're both a touch broken. He's reckless and fearless and thinks he's too crazy to be loved. She's vulnerable and struggling to remember and feel safe but she can kick some ass too and isn't at all flail-y.

The romance was--so so good-- and I loved that they had some history even if she couldn't remember it all. They were sweet, in their own way, together. Sexy as all fuck when things heated up too. They'd both be pretty damn hard to resist. Seriously. Both...so dang lickable. I was loving the heat and tension between them.

I really LOVED the concept of the series/book. Enjoyed the heck out of the characters. The action. The romance. The team. All very nice. But I did think it went on too long.  It was good all together and in the end I'm ready for more from the series but it started to feel more like a transition story that was being used to set up future reads instead of being about the romance and being an "in the moment" story.

Why you should read it: Whenever I'm in the mood for hot alphas and a very steamy romance, I always got to Stephanie Tyler. She had me hooked from her Defiance series. This is the third book in her Section 8 series, and we are treated to bigger-than-life heroes and the heroines who love them. I do recommend reading the series in order, since this book picks up right after Unbreakable.

I love Jem. He wants Drea so bad and wants to protect her. Stephanie's heroes are so raw, so tormented and strong that they feel like living, flesh-and-blood characters. Like, if I go to the nearest bar, Jem will be chilling there. I was rooting for him the entire book, and it just broke my heart along with Jem's when Drea couldn't even remember why she wasn't supposed to be with Danny. And Drea … what a great heroine. She's had it rough. She's been through so much, and still I don't feel sorry for her. There's no pity, only admiration for the strong person she's become. The two together are electric, and this has been one of my favorite installments so far! All I can say is I can't wait for Jem's little brother. If you want heat, lots of heat, steam and plenty of action-packed plot, pick up Section 8.

Another action packed adventure featuring men and women of Section 8. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and Fragmented is a wonderful addition. The men and women are tortured and sexy, a favorite troupe of mine and this book definitely delivered.
Dr. Drea Timmons has lived a troubled life, as a teen she became involved with a boy named Danny whose family was part of a notorious motorcycle club. Danny controlled her for years but she was at least able to join the military and obtain her medical degree, only because the club believed it would be helpful in the future. Yet she has wanted out for years, when a mysterious man needed her and gave her no options, she still felt it was the opportunity she needed to leave. She was able to help the team but the danger and additional trauma left her without memories, something she has been working on with a woman named Caroline for the last two years.
Jem is part of the Section 8 team, a band of mercenaries that are currently working on the human trafficking problems around the world. Jem is the person who is responsible for both the kidnapping of Drea as well as the missing memories, but when Drea needs protection from Danny he is the first to jump into action.
I like this series, Ms. Tyler knows how to write about heroes and heroines that have endured much in their lives, yet there is still more to come and the ride we take from the beginning of each book to the end is fast and furious.
Drea is the perfect heroine, strong and intelligent. She has been trying to find the missing pieces of her memory in order to move forward for the past two years and as she works through the fragments she realizes there is one man who she connects with. When trouble finds her and she needs protection, he is the one she gravitates to and as her memories come back they find the relationship that started years ago is stronger than ever. I love how they feel about each other even when they have been apart for so long.
Jem is amazing, he has overcome many obstacles, as most on the team have but he truly treasures Drea. He feels guilty that he started the mess but she knows that she is in a better place even with the trauma she has experienced. As tough as they are on the outside, I like how sweet they are together and with the two already having a history, the story really centers on finding solutions to her problems as well as other issues that the team works on. There are many difficulties that stand in the way of their happiness but the team is united in their belief they can help Drea and also rid the world of another evil.
I enjoy reading series that involve the camaraderie of men and women that work on a team to rid the world of evil. There is something to be said for those that have your back no matter what and it is fun to read. This of course is no exception, we are treated to seeing all those from the other books as well as meeting new characters who stir up the mix adding new story lines that I am excited to read about, Ethan and Key? Although this is the third in the series, the author catches the reader up without problems so it can easily be read as a standalone. The pace is non-stop from beginning to end and the ride is thrilling all the way through. It is interesting that the author has thrown in the names of several motorcycle clubs she is featuring in other series, not truly part of this series, but still I recognized the names. I am looking forward to reading more about these men and women who fight the good fight even though they don't always follow the law.

Brought into the Section 8 team under unfortunate circumstances, Dr. Drea Timmons decided to stick with the covert ops group to hide from her ex Danny and his motorcycle club, Outlaws Angels. However, after an accident on their last mission, Drea ended up losing many of her memories, including those of her new friends and romantic interest, Jem. With help from friends, Drea is trying to piece together her life and stay under the radar.

Jem has fallen hard for Drea, but won’t make a move until she remembers everything about him, both the good and the bad. Feeling he’s unworthy of her advances and too dangerous to make a commitment, Jem fights his emotions and tries to stay focused on Section 8’s mission to stop human traffickers. But when Drea’s safety is compromised, Jem realizes he is the only one who can protect Drea, regardless of his own deadly situation.

Fragmented begins immediately after the preceding story, Unbreakable, but then quickly jumps months ahead in time. One thing that I really liked about the opening chapters of the book is how the author uses Drea’s efforts to recall her own memories as a means to remind readers of the complex and complicated history of Section 8 and events from the first two books. When I originally read those titles, I found much of the world building confusing. Using Drea’s recovery flows well and allows newcomers to jump into the series as well.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book as Drea slowly comes to remember her time with Section 8 and her feelings for the handsome Jem. The couple works well together; smoldering sexual tension coupled with raw and honest emotions. Jem’s conflicted feelings - pulling him towards Drea while simultaneously trying to keep her at a distance - add fabulous anticipation to the brewing romance. I also appreciate that the author didn’t wait until the end of the story for Drea to recover her lost memories.

There is a big shift in the storyline midway through the book, and I didn’t enjoy the second half of the story as much as the first part. After Section 8 completes its mission, they suddenly find out that they are under surveillance and wanted by the feds and a group lead by the wealthy Ethan. In addition, the federal government is after Drea because of her history with Danny. While the first half flowed well and was fairly straight forward, I felt the second half was confusing and held too many small inconsistencies and contradictions. A couple of these concerns really bothered me, like the fact that Ethan didn’t recognize Key, a man he’s been hunting for who knows how long, in the club. Unfortunately, these issues took away from my overall enjoyment of the book. In addition, Drea and Jem began fighting and there was too much back and forth, causing me to lose some interest in their relationship.

In the end, I really liked the first half of Fragmented, but I felt the second half became confusing, and I started to lose interest in the couple and overall story. However, Drea and Jem make a great team, especially in the beginning, and I do like the overall outcome of the story. I am also very interested in what the future holds for Section 8 and what roll Ethan will play. Even though I wasn’t fond of how he came into Section 8’s world, I do like the possibilities his character holds.

My Rating: B- Liked It, but I had a few small issues

I received a digital and print copy in exchange for an honest review from Berkley.

Fragmented is the third book in the Section 8 series, and although I'm only just starting the series with this book the author does try to fill in some of the blanks from previous books there is much that leaves the reader mostly hanging unless you've read the previous books. That being said I do feel that Stephanie has done a fantastic job creating characters that are both flawed but carry their own strength that really gives the readers something deeper to hold on to and respect.
I particularly like the new direction Stephanie takes the story because it becomes more complex than just the chase and the longing of our h/h and gives us a hook to grab onto for her following installments.
I love Stephanie's writing and will be investing in both the previous and following books in this series. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Review courtesy of Romance Junkies:

Dr. Andrea Timmons – Drea to only her close friends – is a woman with a deep and complicated past. A past she cannot recall much of after the ordeal she endured while helping Section 8. Drea strains to remember Jem and the group who had saved her from her ex-boyfriend’s tyranny and his MC gang. She feels inexplicably drawn to Jem and does not hold him accountable for her memory loss. When the Outlaw Angels learn of her secret location and attack, Drea is forced to flee and accompanies Jem on yet another Section 8 mission. The covert operation helps Drea unlock her missing memories. She decides to join the group, having remembered the strong kindred bonds she formed with its members. Drea knows to remain with Section 8 and Jem that she first needs to confront her ex and clear her name of suspicion with the feds.

Jeremiah “Jem” Brossard is a member of Section 8. He relishes in the work the group does opposed to his time with the CIA. Jem battles the heavy weight of his guilt for involving Drea in the mission that had caused her amnesia. He believes his crazy tendencies are a danger to her, that he brings too much trouble into her life so it is better to stay away as Drea recovers her past and life. When the Outlaw Angels attack her, he has no other choice but to drag her along on yet another dangerous Section 8 assignment. Jem does not deny the attraction between them but he refuses to take advantage of Drea in her current condition until her memories resurface. Section 8 and Jem use their skill-sets to expose Drea’s ex-boyfriend and motorcycle gang to exonerate her of the trumped-up charges, so she could have the choice to remain with the team or lead a respective life as a doctor.

Jem is a riot. He and his off-the-wall antics made the book so entertaining and fun to read. I cannot say how many times I had to pause in my reading to laugh at something he said or did. Jem is also responsible for my new favorite hero type: the snarky, slightly unhinged hero, a type I think more authors should consider creating. Add to the mix that he is born and bred on the bayou, although I wish he had a more Cajun twang to his speech. I suspect he pushes the crazy angle to keep his adversaries on their toes and leery of what he would do or say next. Jem has more to him than blowing things up, silly antics, and sharp-as-tacks comebacks. He is a remarkable man who is willing to sacrifice parts of himself to shelter and protect the ones he cares about from pain and abuse. Jem may behave like a lunatic but it’s obvious he has a heart of gold. He is unafraid to carry the burden of his guilt and worry on his broad shoulders. I love that about his person.

Andrea is another amazing character. She has been dealt a rough and difficult hand in life. Drea not only survived the abuse of her childhood but also her unintentional involvement in the violent MC world. She had the courage and smarts to attempt to distance herself from that world, something that an ordinary person may not have the guts to do. I like how UNBREAKABLE introduces her and touches on the situation with the Outlaw Angels and then her accident. It paves the way for FRAGMENTED, unfolding the relationship with Jem that UNBREAKABLE hinted at. Both books show Drea’s stubborn determination to fight tooth-n-nail for what she believes in and persevere against any odds stacked against her. She does not let it daunt her but fuels her to work harder. I especially like how she proves continuously throughout the book that she is no victim but a survivor. Drea may have her moments of weakness, it just accents the point that she’s human. I admire her tenacity, first struggling to regain her memories, good and bad, and last in convincing Jem, despite his reservations, that they truly do belong together.

FRAGMENTED is book three in Stephanie Tyler’s suspense-action SECTION 8 series. The book picks up right after the events at the end of UNBREAKABLE. I confess that I sort have forgotten what happened in the previous book. The author successfully uses Drea’s fight to remember to recap what happens in book two. After a couple pages in, things started to click and I remembered. I could not believe I could have forgotten about such in-depth characters and larger-than-life characters like Gunner, Key, and Jem. It also reminded me that I had hoped Jem and Andrea would be the focus of the next book. The author made me anticipate the next installment with the enigmatic tension growing between Key and Ethan. I am curious to see what transpires between the two and the wait is going to kill my patience.

FRAGMENTED is an excitement-filled, action-packed suspense guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats in anticipation. I know once I got invested, it was rough pulling away or putting the book down. FRAGMENTED’s pace moved more quickly than its two predecessors but I think that is largely because of the hero’s deranged but humorous personality.

Fragmented by Stephanie Tyler is the 3rd book in her Section 8 series. It is difficult to write a review without some background, and possible spoilers of previous books. Please be aware that the start of Fragmented details heavily with the cliffhanger from the previous book, Unbreakable.

When we last left off in Unbreakable, Drea had lost her memory. Drea is a doctor, who was kidnapped by Jem, a Section 8 operative and brought to Section 8 to save Avery, our heroine in that book. By the time the book ended, Drea was happy to be part of the team, but after a covert mission failed, Drea did not remember Jem or the team.

Fragmented is Drea and Jem’s story, and we learn at the start that Drea has slowly begun to remember some things about Section 8, and the team. Carolina, and the doctors have been working for months with Drea, and when she slowly begins to remember her feelings for Jem, he brings her back to Section 8 to protect her.

Danny, who is Drea ex-boyfriend, is the main villain in this story. Though she may not remember as much as she would like to, Drea knows how dangerous Danny is to her. Jem will do anything he can to protect Drea from Danny, the FBI and other agencies who threaten Drea. The Section 8 team all band together to help her, bringing in a new partner, who will help clear the way for the team to fight the bureaucracy and continue to do their covert rescue operations.

What follows is an exciting story, with Jem and the Section 8 team trying to save a young kidnapped girl, and at the same time protect Drea from Danny, his MC members, and the government officials working with him. The romance between Jem and Drea was hot, and it is their true feelings for each other that will bring Drea fully back to Section 8. I loved being able to see all of the team again.

I really enjoy this series by Stephanie Tyler, as she has created a wonderful group of characters that make up the Section 8 team. I will say that though Fragmented was a good story, it was in my opinion not as good as the two previous books. Drea and Jem were a great couple, and their chemistry was hot; but I suspect that my reasoning may have to do with the many flashbacks for Jem that slowed the story somewhat. However, with that being said, this was still a great book and series.

Quick & Dirty:
Another good Section 8 Story

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3 3/4
REVIEW:
Fragmented is book 3 in the Section 8 series. In my review of Unbreakable (bk 2) I had said that you could read Unbreakable (bk 2) without reading Surrender (bk 1). Well you really should read Unbreakable (bk 2) before reading Fragmented (bk 3). Fragmented picks up where Unbreakable leave off and the events that happened to Drea. So if you have not read Unbreakable you might want to stop here.

Fragmented did pick up after the events from Unbreakable. Which left Drea without parts of her memory. But she remembers the man in the photo. A man she sees as a hero. Her hero.
But sometimes people are not what they seem. Drea found that out a long time ago too.

Jem’s job was to protect Drea and he let her down. But when push comes to shove he doesn’t know if he is strong enough to walk away from her.

This was a good story. I enjoyed Jem & Drea’s story. I was also thankful that it was not as heart wrenching as the prior books. I am not sure that I could have handled another story like Grace’s. I really wish that Drea would have done just a tad bit more in that room with Danny (I know I would have given the chance). There is a lot going on in Fragmented. From the FBI to the Biker gangs Section 8 has it’s hands full.

I am very interested to see what happens with Jem’s little brother Key ( :D). Oh and Ethan. We can’t for get Ethan.

Fragmented, Book 3 of the Section 8 series; highly recommended series to be read in a chronological order to be completely bewildered by the wonderful creation and connections between characters. Jem deemed as the crazy one in the newly revived S8 fell hard for Drea in Book 2 but after an accident, Drea ended losing her memory of her new found friends and romantic interest, Jem. Book 3 continues where Jem was left with guilt for causing such trauma on Drea. Even though Drea had lost her memory of her interactions with Jem, I loved how the author injected the familiarity portion for her towards him.

I liked that though she had lost her memory but her attitude towards certain things isn’t lost; behaving like a different person. I’m glad that Jem’s character isn’t lost when he’s the lead of the series, his sense of humor and sarcasm is up a notch for this book; book 3 manage to tugged my emotions and I’m definitely rooting for the recovery of Drea so that Jem could have someone he’s protective with. Ever since Book 2, I wished that Jem could have someone that could understand his craziness and yet be able to love him for that.

I shall not go on repeating the interesting interactions between the characters (Dare, Grace, Avery, Gunner, Key and the newly injected character, Ethan). I will indefinitely be looking forward to Book 4 of this series. Overall, this series didn’t disappoint and is a good read for readers who are into characters that are in Special Ops etc.

Fragmented by Stephanie Tyler is action from the first page to the last page. Fragmented is the third book in the Section 8 series, and it can be read as a standalone but there is a backstory that happens in the previous two books. Dr. Drea Timmons is dealing with the loss of her memory, and she cannot believe that her ex Danny had become violent but she has no choice but to trust Jem and Section 8 to keep her safe from both Danny and the feds.

Drea seemed to come into her own despite her current issues, and I admired the way she took care of herself. She didn’t have the best upbringing, but she was able to rise above it to be a successful, self-assured woman. Jem was the best kind of danger, and he was extremely protective of Drea while also giving her room so she maintained her independence. It was nice to see the past characters and I can’t wait to read more because the underlying storyline definitely left me wanting more.

I'm not sure why but as this one started I felt as lost as Drea did, it took me a bit to figure out what was going on. Once I had the players down it all came back. I felt for the position that Drea was in, she wasn't sure who to trust, including herself. I liked that Drea got her memory back and was able to help Jem get over horrible things from his past. I also loved that Drea finally found a family where she fit in with Section 8 and how they went to the mat for her. I'm not sure to think of the changes that came for the group or what we learned about Key. All I know is it should make for interesting things to come.

As I begin each of these Section 8 novels, I always have hope it will be better than the last. I love most of Stephanie Tyler's work, but the Section 8 novels just don't live up to expectation. The entire series seems to have no real focus. As each team member's romantic relationship is explored, the series heads off into an entirely different direction. I get frustrated trying to figure out where these books are heading. Now it seems that the group is about to become a different kind of group with a new character as their head. I just wish these books would find a direction and stick with it.

I did not read the previous two installments of the Section 8 series. This was a mistake I felt dropped in the middle of an on-going scene. There were many times while reading this book that I thought about putting it aside until I read the others but, I pushed through and finished.

I am not going to assign it a rating until after I have read the others.

Fragmented is Book 3 of Stephanie Tyler's Section 8 series, following Surrender and Unbreakable. It is a military-romance filled with action, steamy sex scenes, alpha males, and even some humor. I enjoyed reading it as much as I did the first two books. I recommend reading them in order as the stories build on one another. Jem, the hero of Fragmented, was a very interesting character, and I liked the chemistry he had with Drea.

Another great one! They just get better and better! Loved the action between Jem and Drea! Great story! Can't wait for more in this series!
