My First Book of Sign

Rate this book
My First Book of Sign , a full-color alphabet book, gives the signs for 150 of the words most frequently used by young children. The vocabulary comes from recognized word list sources such as the Dale List of 769 Easy Words. The proportion of word category choices (nouns, modifiers, and verbs) is based on early language acquisition research.

Readers do not have to know American Sign Language to enjoy My First Book of Sign ; the book provides explanations of how to form each sign. This is a very special alphabet book appropriate for all children who are just beginning to read.

My First Book of Sign, by Pamela Baker, is an Alphabet Book but also presented to introduce students to sign language; both fingerspelling and for common words starting with each letter of the alphabet. For example, on the page for Letter A, in black and white, on the upper left-hand side of the page, is a fingerspelling drawing of the hand to show the sign for the letter A, and then the uppercase and lowercase letter A. On the rest of the page, in color, are the words “Airplane,” “Apple,” and “Arm.” with a picture of each item and then a character showing directions on how to sign that word. Near the end of the book is a letter to parents, a guide to the manual alphabet for letters and numbers, a “How to Use This Book,” and a “Sign Descriptions” for each of the words.

I am a fan of this book; the characters that are used to show the sign language are a diverse range of learners and signers, looking very similar to grown-up Cabbage Patch Kids. This book would be a great starter reference book for students interested in sign language, learning how to fingerspell and count, and to know a few words. Recommended for ages 5-12.

Definitely a great beginner book for children and parents. The pictures are clear. The only thing I feel is missing is as I've become more aware of ASL is some sign language is far more expressive then I had expected especially in the face. That being said this is a great book for parents especially with special needs children that may be non verbal. It's a starting point.

Interesting book for the kids. The illustrations don't always clearly depict the motion needed, but the glossary in the back helps.
