From the storm-tossed island of Gotland off the coast of Sweden come these patterns for beautiful, traditional mittens. A life-size photo illustrates each mitten, and complete instructions tell how to knit mittens in all sizes.
This is a neat little knitting book, although you'll need to know what you're doing if you intend to follow through: The how-to section is very brief, and the stitch patterns are only that—charted without notation on a simple grid. Compact as it is, though, the front information—history, superstition, traditional dyeing, and garment notes—makes this book an overlooked treasure.
I wasn't sure whether to keep this little book as I'm winnowing down my library. But reading the short history of Swedish knitting, specifically on the island of Gotland, reading through the simple text of knitting these mittens for adults or kids, and then flipping through all the back and white charted designs, I thought that this book must stay. The black and white photos of each mitten are very charming. I may not make up anything in this book, but it's a lovely reference to have.
