Winner of AudioFile Magazine's Earphones Award for Exceptional Audio Performance
Offering a mix of classic and contemporary fiction, this funny, sensual, delectable collection serves up literary morsels to please every food lover. Delicious tales about food and eating by authors such as M. F. K. Fisher, Anton Chekhov, and Damon Runyon, are read by distinguished actors such as Tony Roberts, Fionnula Flanagan, and Bradley Whitford. Many of the stories included in this three-CD collection were recorded at a Selected Shorts tour to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles in May of 2006.
Great collection. Our local NPR station used to subscribe to "Selected Shorts" and I listened to it faithfully every Sunday at 4:00. Much to my dismay, they discontinued airing the show, though it continues to be broadcast from Symphony Space in NYC. I don' think I ever heard a poor reader. They're ALL excellent. This collection of 'Food Fictions' is no exception. There are seven short stories here and they are all gems. My favorites are: "Taste" by Roald Dahl, read by John Lithgow and "Enough" by Alice McDermott, read by Fionula Flanagan.
The readers of this collection were so good. Maybe Selected Shorts is always this good, this was the first time I listened to them. I especially loved -- LOVED -- the first story and reader, an M.F.K. Fisher story. Runners up were the Damon Runyon and Roald Dahl stories -- the former for the 'Gus 'n Dolls' patois and the latter for John Lithgow's fabulous timing.
I was really Very Hungry, Sorry Fugu and A Piece of Pie were very very good stories. The other stories are a little weak or else this would be 5 stars.
I always enjoy listening to Selected Shorts and I especially love the audio books with themed stories. This one was particularly fun with all of the talk of FOOD.
