Kay Thorpe was born on 1935 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, UK. An avid reader from the time when words on paper began to make sense, she developed a lively imagination of her own, making up stories for the entertainment of her young friends. After leaving school, she tried a variety of jobs, including dental nursing, and a spell in the Women's Royal Airforce from which she emerged knowing a whole lot more about life - if only as an observer.

In 1960, she married with Tony, but didn't begin thinking about trying her hand at writing for a living until she gave up work some four years later to have a baby, John. Having read Mills & Boon novels herself, and done some market research in the local library asking readers what it was they particularly liked about the books, she decided to aim for a particular market, and was fortunate to have her very first, completed manuscript accepted - The Last of the Mallorys, published in 1968. Since then she has written over seventy five books, which doesn't begin to compare with the output of some Mills & Boon authors, but still leaves her wondering where all those words came from.

Sometimes, she finds she has become two different people: the writer at her happiest when involved in the world of books and authors; and the housewife, turning her hands to the everyday needs of husband and son. Once in a while, she finds it difficult to step from one role to the other. She likes cooking, for instance, but she finds that it can be an irritating interruption when she's preoccupied with work on a novel, so the quality of her efforts in the kitchen tend to be a little erratic. She says, "As my husband once remarked, my writing gives life a fascinating element of uncertainly: one day a perfect coq au vin, the next day a couple of burned chops!"

Luckily Kay has daily professional help with her housework, and that leaves her time to indulge in her hobbies. Like many other Mills & Boon authors, she admits to being a voracious consumer of books, a quality she shares with her readers. She likes music and horseback riding, which she does in the countryside near her home. But her favorite hobby is travel - especially to places that will make good settings for her books.

Kay now lives on the outskirts of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, along with husband, Tony, and a huge tabby cat called Mad Max, her one son having flown the coop. Some day she'll think about retiring, but not yet awhile.

Set in Argentina, blonde dancer heroine is fresh off the plane from England when she discovers she has missed transport to the dance troupe she was supposed to join. With no money or accommodations, heroine accepts a job as a hostess in an exclusive brothel club. She even has her own room!

It only takes one man propositioning her for our dim bulb to realize that this was not the job she thought it was. Hero intervenes for her and pays off the owner of the club so she can be released.

Heroine is not all that grateful and tries to be independent, even though she doesn’t speak the language and has no money. Hero parks her in a hotel room and promises her a job offer in the morning.

Job offer: be his wife for six months so he can inherit the estate (and not his illegitimate half -brother) then they’ll have it annulled.

After a lot of objections from the heroine and the hero explaining how women are subservient in Argentina, they marry. The same night they crash the wedding of the half-brother to the woman the hero “loves” to announce their marriage and the hero’s victory.

Heroine scolds hero for his rudeness. Hero again explains how women are subservient in Argentina and parks her in her own room.

Vintage romance readers have seen this one before. H/h have moments of harmony (riding together) and moments of cultural differences (women are subservient in Argentina) and moments of sexual tension.

Then an OM shows up. (They always do) He’s an Englishman the hero befriended a while ago. OM has the hots for heroine and offers to help her escape.

Heroine leaves with OM, but changes her mind. Hero catches up with them and hauls the heroine home. He parks her in her room and then rapes her.

Heroine is all sad and sore and in love at this point.

H/h are at an impasse until they go on a camping trip to the mountains. They have sex again and it’s good this time. But the hero takes umbrage at the heroine not wanting to skinny dip together. As they are returning home, the hero has an accident and hits his head. Heroine has to ride his stallion to the half-brother’s estate (it’s closer) and saves him.

The Hero and his brother stubbornly won’t make up so heroine and her sister-in-law barricade themselves in the heroine’s room and refuse to have sex until they relent.

The Hero breaks in and hauls heroine off again. He’s made up with his half-brother and now he’s in love with the heroine for an HEA.

Ah, vintage romances, in a changing world, you never change.

3.5* upgraded to 4*

!!! Marital rape alert!!!

This 1977 book was definitely old school and not politically correct. It embodied the romance of that era, a$$holey alpha heroes, with he damsels in distress heroines. Bring in all the crazy sauce! I am giving the stars for the rather unique Argentina ranch setting, enjoyable plot twists and turns and suitable angst. If not for the TSTL Lian I'd be giving this a full 4*

When I requested for romances set in a place other than the usual England this book was recommended with a rapey alert of course. Took me a couple of months to hunt down the book and I'm glad I read it despite the rape. Let me put it this way: even the heroine admitted she had asked for it in a way! I am NOT victim shaming nor am I condoning his actions, but there were extenuating circumstances and Lian really pushed him over the cliff I feel.

More in spoilers.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

So Lian found herself stranded in Buenos Aires, funds running low and stuck in a hellish job. She thought the simple hostess job came with accommodations out of the goodness of the owner's heart! Or really good staff benefits! :p She was rather a naive orphan...look at the way she told Ricardo there'd be nobody looking for her back home in England! It's like telling a potential murderer or sex slave trafficker to take her, nobody would raise an alarm! But that was late 70s and it was a very different world 40 years ago. She's actually lucky Ricardo just wanted to offer her a marriage of convenience, though he was hard on her bluffing her the bar owner would capture her if she were to leave the protection of Ricardo!

Anyway it was rather poignant when after Lian was at the ranch feeling so lonely and trapped, with her deepening feelings for Ricardo. She sensed he loved Isabella, now his sister-in-law, but she also knew when they first met there was attraction on both parts. If only they had met under different circumstances "like on a plane" then true love might blossom without all the pain and angst.

I feel Lian was TSTL because she unwisely provoked Ricardo almost all the time. Not sure if it's to show her feminist/independent upbringing, but she behaved like a petulant child determined to grab the sleeping tiger's tail! Ricardo was fairly decent to her in the beginning if you discount his chauvinistic speeches LOL I have much sympathy for him over the horrible situation his evil father put him and Carlos in even after the elder man was dead. It wasn't till the end that we saw how things were with Carlos truly...

Now to the rape. Ricardo could have done it earlier with more opportunities, but he showed control and did not proceed with his forced seduction. Grant Edwards' arrival really stirred things up and he had his own ulterior motives. Lian choosing to run away with him was the worst and most stupid thing she could do. Even though she had decided to go back to Ricardo, it was too late and how could he believe her? If I were in his position I might not have believed it too. But to his credit he did not express his disbelief because he's making damn sure Grant had no chance to ever come near Lian!

So right before Lian made a last ditch escape from the marriage bed, she slapped Ricardo so hard he got scarred by her ring!!! I read somewhere it's a common thing with vintage Mills & Boon heroines to get slappy in order to show spunk/spirit. Violence is wrong, and violence begets violence! So I disapprove.

Anyway up to that point I still believed Ricardo would have done a forced seduction by then, but this tipped him over the edge and it resulted in a rape (fade to black). Lian called it rape, and admitted Ricardo's cool treatment of her subsequently was very much of her own asking.

He could have done it every night after but he did not. Instead he brought her on a 2 night camp to the Sierras to teach her the pleasures of making love. But Lian, in love with him, was uncomfortable and uneasy thinking he had no love for her, so the upset Ricardo cut short the trip, only to have that accident.

How Lian and Isabella tried to end the brothers' feud was funny as hell! A self-imposed siege in the comfort of Lian 's old bedroom with en suite and LOTS of food and drinks. LOL

I think it really helped that my sympathies lie very much with the hero in this book, otherwise the rape was really a big no-no! Lian was TSTL in the beginning, but once she saw sense and decided to make the best out of the situation, she acted more maturely.

To think Ricardo had fallen in love with her at first sight! He was desperate to keep his birthright, so the idea of the MOC which caused all the angst and drama. Yes drama!

Lian Trevor was forced to make a hurried decision. Stranded in Buenos Aires, she must choose between remaining in her very dangerous predicament, or marrying a stranger.

It was like something out of a dream...or a nightmare. Lian didn't want to be Ricardo Mendoza's wife for the next six months; nor did she want the cash settlement he promised her.

And Ricardo was less than reassuring when he warned, "You are going to earn your fee, every penny of it!

I start this review off by saying that I am well-aware that I am not this book's target audience by any stretch of the imagination. That said, if there's a romance trope I unashamedly love more than "fake married", then I have yet to find it. So for a Harlequin, this had a head-start compared to the rest.

It lost that pretty quickly. Where should I even start? The icky feelings I got from the book referring to the leading lady as a girl (at least in the Finnish translation) constantly? The fact that it is choke-full of unfortunate and damaging stereotypes about Argentinian culture and especially relationships between men and women?

I am not hard to please when it comes to "fake marriage" -trope, but there was nothing of what I enjoyed in this book. Where was the awkwardness? Where were the hilarious "oh gods, we have to act natural; quick! hold my hand!" -moments? Where was the slow burn, the uncertainty of feelings that is later realized to have been love? Instead of a steady understandable growth of relationship, the narrative might just suddenly go "but she loved him" in seemingly the most random of places. And there was nothing in the main couple for me to root for them to get together: Ricardo was a highly unpleasant man angry and old-fashioned in the most misogynist of ways. Lian has little to no consistent personality: she's all full of spunk and ready to throw down one moment and meek and love-sick the next.

I really don't feel like actually touching the plot outside the supposed romance, there wasn't much of it. Which I hadn't minded if the romance was any good. Even for a "so bad it's good" Harlequin I feel like you could do so much better (or enjoyably worse as it were). Skip this one.

It's Kay thorpe so there has to be threats, and in this one, rape, but aside from that trigger warning, pretty good.

heavens, shades of the 70's/80's and its non-PC plots and characters! the overbearing macho male swaggering around should seem so dated today, right? and the helpless, hapless little woman doesn't seem to have gone out of date in hp land either!

The guy rapes his wife because he is angry with her and never apologizes or indicates in any way that he feels any remorse. Stupid heroine comes to believe she deserved the treatment she received at his hands. Read on openlibrary.com

Read that book in Arabic when I was 12 or something - just from the plot and names- Lian & Ricardo - I remembered the story.I liked that when I was young but maybe now in 2017 that's an out-dated book .
