Found in the library of the school I work at, I was already familiar with Ellis Credle's "Across the Cotton Patch" (1935) and was intrigued by the cover of this book which features two ghoulish figures in white sheets (controversial attire in the American South).

I will keep my eyes out for John Minton's version, which describes this story as a specifically Afro-American folktale.
