CALEB STONE is a paranormal action/romance novella.
Caleb Stone might be a senior at Keene Valley high but he is also a Jaguar shifter, and is preparing for the fight of his life. The same rouge shifters who captured his father are now coming after him, and the Order of Raen will stop at nothing to accomplish their goal. Not only does he have to protect himself, but he now must also guard, Lauren Taliesen, the pale haired witch who disrupted his life and stole his heart. He killed another rogue shifter to save her once and will do what ever it takes to keep her safe, even if it means he will never be accepted by his Jaguar Clan.
~~~ From Caleb Stone…
Caleb began scanning the area and noticed a metal building sitting about fifty yards from the big rink. He didn't even realize he’d started moving toward it until he stood at the open gate. It was another rink, smaller than the main one but still a good size. He heard music and the slight scrape of blades on ice. He walked inside and the graceful figure spun past him, her scent leaving a soft trail that he desperately wanted to follow. The black tights and top were in stark contrast with the long pale braid hanging down her back. She must‘ve noticed him because she made a slow turn and all but floated over to where he was standing. Her face was clear and smooth. She had the most beautiful eyes he’d ever seen. They were amethyst. “Hello,” said the soft voice, “you’re Caleb Stone, and I’ve watched you run.”
“Well, I guess I should say I've watched you practice. Sometimes I sit on the rock ledges above Bodiford Lane when you’re running.”
Caleb stared at the beautiful face. “I seem to be at a disadvantage here, you know who I am but I have no idea who you are.”
“Oh, I'm sorry, there’s no reason you would know who I am. My name is Lauren . . ., Lauren Taliesin.”
Caleb looked at her extended hand as if he’d never seen a human hand before. Sucking air through his nostrils he took the smooth hand in his and felt the tingling start at the base of his skull. No, it was the same tingling he felt just before he shifted. He jerked his hand back, turned toward the door, and ran as if his life depended on it.
This is an excellent, excellent debut novel. All of the (likeable) characters are as they should be – likeable. You can forget that they are all some sort of supernatural creature. The plot was interesting, and the love story was sweet, though not the main focus of the book. Yes, there is insta-love, but if you delve into the world of shifters, weres, and wolves, you have to accept that this is the norm for them. As for shifters, I’ve never run into a jaguar before (a Jaguar has run into me, though, but that’s a completely different story. And yes, look for the pun in the book – I actually went two pages past it before I realized it. Duh for me), and I liked the change of pace from wolves. Unless I’m going blind – and missing the jaguar pun makes that a distinct possibility – I saw no spelling or grammar mistakes. Cool!
Totally appropriate for younger teens as well as older ones. And adults.
I hope this is the beginning of a new series, because it will be a very enjoyable one.
Micah Stone is a shifter, jaguar shifter to be exact. In his family, they mate for life. Micah is initially taken by a hunter, and thought dead by his wife. His wife, wants to die herself, until she finds out she is pregnant with Caleb. This book was well written and flowed well. The writer did a great job of leading into all the new characters introduced and with tying them together as the story goes.I loved the connections between all the players. I did feel that this writer did take a few cheap routes in connecting the romance aspect of this book and did not creatively write about the connection between life mates. I also felt that the book seemed rushed at the end. I did like the descriptions of how each character looked.
The book was...ok. It raced ahead in places where I thought it could have used more detail, and then drew out scenes in a very...adolescent fashion. There was a lot of "telling" and not nearly enough "showing" of things. I read similar stories in my community college creative writing course. The story could probably be told in half as many pages.
That being said, it was enjoyable enough. There's not nearly enough stories about other types of were-animals, and big cats are one of my favorites. The "love" angle got overly sappy at times, but was sweet enough with the old love, new love, and young love angles.
I tossed it around and finally decided on 4 stars and not 5. The reason being there were too many quotation errors, Lauren's name was misspelled once, and one time the author mixed up Autumn and Lauren's names one time. Don't let this keep you from reading this fine story though. It really a great read that will be finding a home on my favorites shelf. I loved the characters in her story and wished the last few chapters hadn't been so rushed. It felt hurried. I felt such a quick wrap up to away from the story. That won't hold me back from reading future stories from this author.
This was a quick. The writing was okay, at times a bit sappy. There was a lot of telling instead of showing. There wasn't enough discriptions and I felt this could have been longer. The plot was rushed and the romance was sappy. This felt more like a first draft and lacked editing in some places.
