I am very happily married to Peter with six sons, and live on the Isle of Man
This was a silly premise, but it works because the characters are so ridiculous and OTT. Receptionist heroine is annoyed at CEO hero boasting how he'll never marry since he gets just what he wants from women, so she puts a notice of their engagement in the paper. He's angry and calls her up to his office and to her surprise, tells her the engagement is on. They go ring shopping on the lunch hour and he takes her to a party that night. She then overhears gossip that he is only engaged to hide his affair with a married woman.
Hero was a little dense and jealous, heroine was a little too angry - but they should calm right down after they finally have that sex scene they've been wanting throughout the story. (Hint: take phone off hook)
The innocent and romantic Brooke Faulkner and the notorious playboy Jarrod Stone are a remarkable pair, their instent arguing, conversations and the growing love between them a satisfying read.
There are many misunderstandings (as usual) and two other than the hero that are interested in the heroine. But i love the fact that Jarrod tries to win her heart when he realizes that he loves her!
Jarrod Stone is a arrogant bastard from the start. He is a great womanizer but has also a ruthless side in him when someone tries to walk over him...and that`s where Brooke come in to the picture, but he would never had imagined that he would fall for her...for it will be him who will force her into engagement.
This one is a funny and romantic read.It was like watching a romantic comedy movie!
‘I love you, damn you!’ he said violently, noting her shocked face. ‘Hard to believe, isn’t it, when you consider how badly I’ve been treating you. But it’s true, Brooke, I love you so much that I’m going insane with wanting you. That’s what you’ll have to put my harsh behaviour down to, temporary insanity.’ (…) He buried his face in her throat. ‘I don’t deserve this,’ he muttered. ‘But I need you so much that I don’t care how I get you.’ That’s the perfect vintage H!
This is my all time favorite Harlequin Romance and in the 34.5 years in which I've own a copy, I've read it so many times that page after page fell out (I still have that copy somewhere). I bought another copy in 2004 and another in the later in the decade. Jarrod is my fantasy man. All the characters are likable although the older I got, the more irritating the heroine Brooke got, until I remembered she is barely out of her teens. Every time I read it I become 20 again also. I last read it about a year ago so it's time for another go around.
The h was so clueless and impetuous, and the H was so stern and willing to give her just enough rope to hang herself.
She overhears him (her boss) saying some terribly sexist things to his friend, so decides to teach him a lesson by announcing their engagement in the paper. 👀 They don’t even know each other. 😅 He’s furious, but decides to demand that she act as his real fiancé as payback. Then he sets out to make her miserable.
She’s twenty but acts more like 18. Very sweet and naive and silly, but self centered, she comically gets upset when she thinks he forgot her birthday… the man who she forced into a fake engagement. 🤡 I kinda loved her. 🤷🏼♀️
Then he keeps trying to Punish her With His Body, and Take What She’s Offering, and Show Her Who She Belongs To 😈but he keeps getting interrupted before he can do the dastardly deed. 🤡 I couldn’t decide if I wanted to laugh or cry. 😆🤣
And he catches her in compromising positions with OM over and over… all ending with jealous scenes and threats of sexual violence… until at last he just gets exasperated and demands they get married for real. 🤣
Oh Ricky. 😅🙄🤡
Bottom Line? This was a fun read. It was just this side of a romcom. Only ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ because Ricky 👀, I mean JARROD’s 🤡, switch from jackass to besotted beggar was very abrupt and the OW drama wasn’t quite explained to my satisfaction. 🤷🏼♀️
⚠️SAFETY SQUAD SPOILERS⚠️
-no cheating or sharing
- OW drama - the h overhears gossip that the H is in an affair with a married woman… and he uses her belief to make her jealous. He says during his begging that he had never been with the woman, but I felt like his explanation was lacking considering the way he was acting. 🤷🏼♀️
- attempted forced seduction (always interrupted) and some forced kisses and manhandling 😈
- OM drama - she has 2 guys sniffing around and she reacts very immaturely - the H always extracting her from her mishaps
- h is a 20 yr old virgin
- h is a 37 year old manwhore, but that reputation might be a tad exaggerated
- no actual intercourse, FTB or otherwise, takes place in this book. There are several very hot and heavy Torrid Embraces, including some bodice ripping, and they even get naked once, but they never actually consummate this relationship. 😳😅
This book is a perfect example of “play stupid games, win stupid prizes.” However hero has a cat called Rupert so that’s okay.
Back to playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes though, I loved the plot (even though it was highly unbelievable and over the top), the hero was outrageous and i liked him! He always knew what he wanted and never hesitated! The heroine tended to be too immature and i started to dislike her immensely as the story moved on cos she was just doing too much, which dampened the fun.
It was so easy to see they were both besotted with each other yet they were both so blind to the fact.
ALSO, they bickered too much and their bickering was kinda entertaining but then got old fast when the bickering continued to the very last chapter!
One of the most ironic moments was when the author sooort of broke the HP fourth wall right here:
“Don’t be ridiculous! And I certainly wouldn’t be your real wife. I may have been reading too many romantic novels, but I think I prefer the way they turn out.’
‘You do?’ He looked surprised. ‘But they usually end up with the hero and the heroine in each other’s arms, don’t they?’ ‘Well, yes, but—we won’t!”
And she right cos with the amount of arguing they did i don’t believe this HEA of theirs will ever happen either.
Ok. Well, there were good and bad parts of this one. This guy was okay but his relationship (fine, he didn't have an affair but he danced way too closely to the presumed OW at the heroine's surprise birthday party!!) with the wanna-be OW was just too icky. Everyone questioned the relationship but he just shrugged it off.
In the end, I felt he had some explaining to do...why was she at her birthday party anyway??
And the heroine, who started of funny and great, just started irritating me. What's with all the male companionship? Okay, no sex, but sexy dancing and kissing (including the H's brother??). What givies?
I think that part of the heroine's not gonna be a doormat attitude was poorly executed.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A little bit of a disappointment: I read it some time ago but I remember that I did not appreciate heroine's character at all: her emotions are a constant "up and down" ......TOO MUCH.
"Engaged to Jarrod Stone" is the story of Brooke and Jarrod. Basically, small worker Brooke is infatuated with her playboy boss Jarrod, and after hearing his misogynistic and sexist thoughts on their "use", she decides to teach him a "lesson" by announcing their engagement. Jarrod, however uses the opportunity to appease his demanding family and apparently carry on an affair with his married mistress. But when the attraction starts to flare between Brooke and Jarrod, will their pretend engagement turn into a real one? A TSTL stubborn heroine who does things before she thinks, an overpowering jealous hero, loads and loads of OM drama and some OW one, kissing brothers and loads of bad-timed misunderstandings, this one was a cringe-filled read and if it hadnt started out well, I'd have skimmed through the second half (since I cant DNF anything). SWE 1.75/5
I wouldn’t say this H is madly in love with her or besotted or obsessed with her like some of Charlotte Lamb’s vintage H’s. If this H and h would ever break up, he would be just fine and move on to another woman.
Whereas I think with Charlotte Lamb’s H’s, they would self-destruct if the woman would ever leave them. They would be destroyed. That’s why Lamb’s heroes are the best.
2-1/2 stars Light hearted office romance. The girl really should have been arrested or reprimanded or something. You can't just go announcing your engagement to a rich man. The heroine was an absolute ninny. Still the hero found her charming and fell for her pretty fast and kept her to the engagement and kept finding reasons to escalate things so he could hustle her into marriage
I was hesitant at first for this story, I mean did you read the plot on the back of the book? The h, Brooke, actually takes out a newspaper announcement saying she is engaged to her boss, Jarrod? Now this isn’t one of those situations where she works directly under him, she is a small cog in a very big wheel. He is the wheel! He has no idea who she is. So why did our little Miss Nobody make such a bold claim? Keep reading…
20 year old Brooke has fallen in love with her 37 year old boss from afar. She has a chance to take a model to his 10th floor office for a meeting(his secretary is out) This may also be her chance to get noticed. However, she happens to hear the H talking to a friend about the assets of a woman.
I'm afraid I only find women good for one thing," he scoffed lightly. "And I don't mean housework," he added with a laugh.
Later in the conversation…..
"I enjoy them," Jarrod Stone had corrected. "I don't know that I've ever actually liked them. But I've desired them, yes. But I find them preferable more as bed companions than as anything else." .
Adding insult to injury he then refers to the h as a mouse:
. A smile and a few softly spoken words and any woman will do exactly what you ask them to, even that little mouse. She knows very well it isn't her job to bring people up to the offices, and yet she did it, anyway."
Well, his comments dropped him down a few levels in the h’s mind especially as he gave her a quick assessment and left with the model for lunch. So, how does she get back at a man that she has no active relationship with? She puts the engagement announcement in the paper.
Anyhoo, after the H is congratulated by one of his business associates, he goes about looking into the situation. Upon finding out, he summons the h to his office and insists she will stay engaged for a certain amount of time until he can successfully extricate himself from the embarrassment a fake engagement would cause. He makes her go ring shopping and insists she attend a party with him that night and his parents on the weekend. She is not comfortable with this but goes along with it as she caused the fracas.
Later at the party she overhears some women talking about the manwhore Jarrod, and how this engagement is probably a case of of covering up his affair with the beautiful but very married Selina(he must have read Temporary Wife) He doesn’t deny or really confirm the rumor, but he does allow the ow Selina to hang all over him. She tells him he can take his ring and shove it as she is not about to hide his affair. He tells her his family is expecting his fiance and she is the reason for the mess.
His family is great. The orphaned h who was brought up by an angry aunt loves the parents, making her feel even guiltier about the situation. He also has an 18 year old sister and an attractive 22 year old brother who is training to be a doctor. OH, and he has a thing for the h. They are at the house overnight, and the h has a bad dream. The H brings her to his bedroom and they snuggle all night. Of course the brother and sister break into the room without knocking and catch them. However, the H does explain to his mom. Later, the h takes off for the woods after she is embarrassed and the H finds her. They have their first major kiss and the h is ready to cash in her v card, but then they are interrupted by a sibling.
Back home he throws her a surprise birthday party after keeping his distance a couple of days. At the party is his family and the sexy Selina with her husband in tow. She spends most of the evening clinging to the H while the h dances with others including his brother. The evening doesn’t end well for our couple, but shortly after this they start spending nights at the h’s place talking, eating, and listening to records….Leo Sayer, Barry Manilow, Johnny Mathis
And Here I go my friends. I’m in elementary school sitting in the back seat of a station wagon with fake wood trim listening to the radio play “I feel Like Dancing” by Leo Sayer, followed by Copacabana by Barry Manilow….oh the memories of the 1970’s!
So basically the story continues in the following manner the H pursuing the h by being a jerk and not just telling her he has fallen in love with her. The h meanwhile is pushing him away as she only wants to marry for love, although she does suffer from the the dreaded traitorous body syndrome.
Even though I was hesitant about this story, I actually grew to like it.
*What I liked? * It is nice to see a 5 foot 2 heroine tame a 6 foot 4 lion hero who thought he couldn’t be tamed. *It is juvenile of me, but I like when the h has other men vying for her attention. It causes the jealousy in the hero to surface and he feels the need to take aggressive maneuvers. *The h, aside from her traitorous body, stood up to the H, this in turn was one of the things that attracted him. *I like that the Hero was sensitive about their age gap. I love age gaps! However, they are often skimmed over. The H actually was a little worried about the difference in their ages especially when he sees younger more age appropriate men swarming the h. * I like the intensity of the Hero, it’s lines like this that make me lol: God, Brooke," he groaned raggedly. "Don't you ever wear a bra?" His voice thickened with desire as he took the tip of one hardened nipple into his mouth, arousing her body to even greater heights. *I like the ending where the H finally comes clean about his feelings for the h and is worried is that he left if for late. She assures him she has loved him much longer. *I like that the h wants to take their relationship to the next level, and at this point the H wants them to be wedded first…but quickly.
My wth moment: The brother of the H was way out of line. He fancied himself in love with the h and went after her almost threatening like. He did not know that their engagement was fake. So that doesn’t scream brotherly love.
My lol moment: The reference to the 70’s tunes and I can just imagine the dance club they went to. Studio 54 comes to mind:
I will leave this review from Leo Sayer’s iconic song. I can imagine the hero feeling this way by the end of the book:
🎶 You've got a cute way of talkin' You got the better of me Just snap your fingers and I'm walkin' Like a dog hangin' on your lead I'm in a spin, you know Shakin' on string, you know You make me feel like dancin' I wanna dance the night away🎶
'You call four weeks plenty of time!' She looked sceptical. 'God, the whole thing will be arranged before you can call it off. Couldn't you just tell your mother the truth? She wouldn't have to tell your father, but it would save us all the embarrassment of having to cancel everything.' 'You selfish little bitch! Does nothing matter to you but your own embarrassment?' Jarrod demanded fiercely. 'No, of course it doesn't. Why should it matter to you that my mother is as worried as hell about my father? As long as you don't have any embarrassment to face you'll be happy. And that's all that matters to you, your own happiness.' 'That isn't true! I-----' 'Don't give me that, Brooke,' he interrupted coldly. 'Your actions since we first met have all been self-centred. You involved me in this engagement because you felt insulted, announced our forthcoming marriage to Selina because of a conversation you'd taken exception to. You took a liking to my brother, so you decided to have him anyway, regardless of the consequences of such action amongst my family. Well, now you can do something for me—you can damn well behave yourself and keep your mouth shut. And you won't see Dave again until this thing has been settled.' 'You can't tell me what I can or cannot do,' she retorted angrily. 'If I want to see Dave I will.'
********* .yes, it's all true what the hero said.. Bit.h!
I would have rated it 4 stars. But a couple of points had me rankled.
The guy is 37, she is just 20. But he keeps getting physical with her without showing any tender emotions towards her. It was a little difficult to visualise or enjoy.
The sex scenes are always interrupted, so the girl still qualifies as a virgin bride at the end !!
The author tries to portray the girl as some Femme Fatale around whom all men fall like 9 pins. Actually, she is just an orphan, 19 year old receptionist with no one to turn to for support. She is just naive and unsure of things. Quite natural.
So the author could have focused more on her innocence and innate charm more than the physical attraction.
Jarrod Stone is a crusty old bachelor. His younger brother is also in competition for the girls affections. No points for guessing who the girl prefers.
This is my all time favorite romance. When others say Pride and Prejudice, I say, "Engaged to Jarrod Stone." I have read and re-read this many times. I love it on so many levels. Jarrod is not a man to be trifled with. He's 37, a chauvinist and as CEO to Stone computers, doesn't care about the world's opinion of him. Brooke's, his receptionist, is twenty and impulsive. Repulsed by his opinion of women, Brooke decides to make him eat his own words. She announces her engagement to Jarrod in the newspaper. This book is entirely from Brook's POV. What follows is sheer delight. Brooks argues, runs her mouth, is principled, and is a magnet for men. Despite the age difference, the book works. I wouldn't mind reading it again. This is a favorite.
This is the best book l have ever read. I have read it 3 times and l dnt get tired, i love it . To think thst this book was written in the 1980s but the storyline still feels like a 2016 book. It just the best, I love Brooke and Jarrod together. The author did a very good job.
In the beginning this book was very much fun! Brooke had no intention to marry or engage herself with Jarrod Stone, but here she was! Lol, she had to expect it!
I loved this book, so old fashion is it crazy. Everyone smokes and the men all have hairy chests! It is funny and strange but a good read if Carole Mortimer is an author you enjoy. Kind of like Diana Palmer in her hero's are all jerks...
I guess Harlequin’s Title-O-Matic was broken with this one? Whatever. It has a more than usually stupid beginning - Brooke, a lowly receptionist, overheard her boss being a sexist jackass, so she decided the best way to really sock it to him was to put a fake engagement notice in the paper - announcing his engagement to HER. I really wish Mortimer had put more effort into this - something like, she tried to announce his engagement to his latest girlfriend of the week but she had a head cold so the announcement lady misunderstood her and put Brooke’s name in instead, gasp! But no, Brooke is just an idiot. She’s twenty, so I guess it makes sense, and at least Jarrod Stone (that’s his name, right there on the cover!) has the decency to be irritated that she’s so much younger (he’s 38). We also eventually learn that she is 5’2” and he is 6’4”, very Ali Hazelwood.
Jarrod is really mean to Brooke and threatens to spank her repeatedly but she also has the intelligence of a piece of wet toast (although she’s spunky! and, as we are repeatedly reminded, impulsive! so so impulsive!) so I found it hard to hold that against him. There are punishing kisses. The hero snarks a little bit about romance novels (“You’ve been reading too many romantic novels. Marriages of convenience don’t happen nowadays, or if they do they certainly have a physical side.”). Things get nasty when Jarrod’s younger brother shows up and hits on and then attempts to rape Brooke; Jarrod stops him, sends him away, and then nearly rapes Brooke himself. There’s a lot more obnoxious push-pull and then Jarrod’s brother makes another aggressive pass at Brooke (this one thankfully falls short of attempted rape) which is again thwarted by an angry Jarrod. At this point it just feels like Mortimer is trying to make her page count and if that means that men have to maul the heroine nineteen times in a row then that’s just how it’s going to be, dammit! At the end, for no particular reason, the hero grovels.
Overall verdict: frankly this was too poorly done to be either offensive or entertaining. (Note that there’s a nasty comment about it being impossible for men to be raped, which was offensive.) Two stars because I kind of knew what I was getting into and it was at least coherent.
The premise and title made me think it might be a fun and zany book, and it almost started out that way. Unfortunately it didn't give any banter or fun to leaven the typical HQlandia tropes.
Heroine has an engagement notice of her and her company's owner (like, her boss's boss's boss's boss) printed in a major newspaper because she had a crush on him but overheard him talking down about women and how easy they were to manipulate, sexist stuff, etc. including a mention of how he would never be trapped into marriage with any woman because he knows how to play them so well.
This naturally does not go so well, and somehow ends up in her boss holding her to a fake engagement.
Unfortunately the h's behavior after this is a combo of TSTL and just plain dumb. There's maybe one situation where it wasn't entirely her fault, where the H's brother tries to "seduce" (i.e. rape) her, but at every point, she's bumbling and knee-jerk-reacting and spine-free-ing her way in deeper, all the while having zero self control or just, is she even English?? She's supposed to be English right? She could do with a stiff upper lip, stay-calm-and-carry-on attitude is all I'm saying. She's constantly overreacting to literally everything.
AND don't EVEN get me started on their discussion of women raping men, and how it's not really rape if the man is aroused at all. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Argh.
Sorry, just maybe my grace period for these period things has run out haha.
Where should I even begin... From beginning to end that book was RIDICULOUS. First off, the story line made no sense, you do not announce to the world that you are engaged with a chauvinistic pig in an act of revenge! Secondly, the fact that the heroine was only 20 y/o and extremely naive with a 37 y/o rubbed me the wrong way; she was childish and impetuous. I only kept reading in the hopes that the heroine would develop a backbone....and I'm still waiting. The hero was abusive and treated her like an absolute child (which she really was). Don't get me started on Dave (Hero's brother) and the heroine reaction to him later on...Given the relationship between H/h, him professing his love for her only serve to give me a major case of whiplash. I usually enjoy this author's writing but this book just made me mad to the point that I wanted to slap both characters! I did not like it. PS: Apologies for any spoilers

Brooke was more mouth than backbone. Spineless and without self control. She'll immediately fall into his arms after telling him she doesnt want him and still ask 'how dare he' (how weak). Jarrod wasnt better, too cynical and domineering. Other than that it was ok cos i waited a oong time to read this book and it had a good laugh sometimes.
P.S can anyone please recommend any lovely christian romance authors
I wanted to like this one because the premise for getting revenge is right up there as a standard harlequin trope but the follow through just wasn't there.
I failed to see how either one of the characters could claim they were in love when the h barely knew the H and he blew so hot and cold I was dizzy. Plus the miscommunication with other supposed lovers went on way too long.
