Anjette thought her mother was killed by a vampire. For years this was kept a secret until childhood nightmares resurface and she's forced into a boarding house for troubled teens. While there, she not only comes face to face with her new "guardian," but also with her presumably dead mother and the monster whom she thought had killed her.
It was an interesting premise but the writing was astoundingly bad. Typo's aside (and there were a staggering amount, including a random "1" thrown in, which I have never seen in a published book before), the writing style was similar to that of a romance novel. Every minute detail of every character's appearance is described, and other strange unexpected details as well. Along that method of writing was the overwhelming amount of "little hints" that something was wrong. The thing I found most irritating however, was the author's attempt at flowery writing, but clearly without actually knowing what the words meant, or without realizing that the sentence made no sense at all.
An "eloquent stairwell" was definitely a new one for me.
The ending is quite dramatic and sudden, leaving many important questions for the plot unanswered.
This book was not at all what I expected, especially after the reviews claiming the writing to be fantastic.
I knew it was a YA when I started it but still. Plot did get better but it dragged for most of the book for me. About the time things started picking up, bam! it was over. Did not like the ending at all. I guess a lot is left for the reader to fill in but I like some closure. Maybe there's another book coming out. I dunno.
