About the author

Mrs Alexander was the pseudonym assumed by Annie Hector (née Annie French) (1825-1902), novelist. Born in Dublin, she moved to Liverpool, then London. In 1845 she became a magazine writer with encouragement from Mrs [Anna Maria] Hall, issuing her first novel, Look Before You Leap, in 1865.

Che dire? Mrs. Alexander non mi delude mai: e così, continuo a comprare su Amazon queste riproduzioni 'sgarruppate' per Kindle, che mi costringono a esercitare, più spesso di quanto non vorrei, la mia abilità di filologa. E con tutto ciò, nel 'finale travolgente', devo ammettere che "dewy Kps" per "dewy lips" disturba parecchio!
La storia si sviluppa, come spesso avviene nei romanzi ottocenteschi, nell'arco di alcuni anni, il tempo di accompagnare l'eroina dal periodo originario di miseria al suo trionfo come dama dell'alta società; nell'eroe maschile, qua e là, si coglie qualche barlume di John Thornton, il protagonista del capolavoro della Gaskell. L'ironia che colora le descrizioni di qualche personaggio 'minore' non ha niente da invidiare ai migliori autori inglesi del tempo.
Per la prima volta, in un 'autentico' romanzo vittoriano, vedo che il ruolo di 'mistress' ("amante", ma in italiano useremmo più sgradevolmente l'espressione "mantenuta"), proposto alla protagonista dall'uomo che in quel momento ama, viene seriamente e tormentosamente preso in considerazione. Alla fine, trionfa l'adesione alla morale corrente; ma Annie French-Hector (Mrs. Alexander) si rivela, nel trattare l'argomento, molto più spregiudicata di quanto non sarebbe logico aspettarsi.
