The vampire Deshwitat, imprisoned for centuries by a sorcerer, is released upon the world and seeks revenge against the one that imprisoned him, and also helps fight against evil as he tries to find his place in the modern world.
Ooh now it’s getting good. We are still in the flashback stage of things, but Lilith has entered the chat and I’m so excited to see how this goes. Desh saved her and I’m just like my guy you know how you feel already. Don’t play. This series really is consuming now.
8th instalment in this Korean epic vampire saga. This is another backstory/flashback interlude. Kal is commissioned to escort Lady Lilith and is attacked by a savage gang of bandits. Enter dashing vampire Deshwitat to the rescue, initially unaware that Lilith was the girl who was kind to him during his days in the carnival sideshow.
Definitely one of the better instalments. We get some really nice artwork in this one and the character development is pretty good. We've got the grudging friendship between Desh and Kal - which we know will later lead to bitter enmity. We have the beginnings of the romance between Lilith and Desh and throughout, the charismatic Rhett dashing about in the background.
There's also a rather nice bonus side-story "Promise" beginning in 1931 showing Rhett's relationship with Master Yongnyon Tae and explaining the origins of Beryun (if you remember her? we haven't seen her for several volumes...)
Rebirth is by no means the best in the field, but it hums along merrily enough and this volume isn't bad at all.
Kang-Woo Lee gives us again a great story and amazing artwork. We're still in the 17th century, getting to know Deshwitat, Rett and Kalutika better and better. It's fascinating to see the changes they go trough when knowing already where they're going to end up. In this volume we also get to know Lilith, the love of Deshwitat, just a little. With Lilith, I love her personality but the way her face is drawn... I just don't really agree with it. (Honestly, I don't like Woo's style on the female faces.)
The volume ends in the middle of everything and now I've got to finish this review so I can read the next and get to know what will happen.
But before I end this, there is a Side Story in the end that I really did not expect. It changed how I see some of the characters. Haven't decided if I like it or not yet...
Part of the new wave of manhwa (Korean manga) the 'Rebirth' series catalogues the story of a 17th century vampire named Deshwitat L. Rudbich, who has been released from 300 years of stasis by his enemy, the evil sorcerer Kalutika Maybus.
Volume Eight continues telling the story of Deshwitat's past, this time detailing how he met Rett and Kalutika... the very enemy he once called friend.
