Stunning gorgeous artistic picture book about Africa, its animals and life in and near the jungle. The double page spreads feature the letter on the left and the animal or activity on the right. This is a feast for the eyes in muted colors and stylized lines. And if you don't know the animal or concept being presented there is an end list of them, but try to identify them before you look. A gem of an abc title.
March is learning about the jungle. This a beautiful collage picture book. The forward by Iman is inspiring and interesting to read. Though I do wish it had the word with the letter page (the words are list at end of book). It was a guessing game to what the word the author wanted to use with the letter. Though most of the words we guessed were right, there were a few we guessed wrong or didn't know. Still a good book!
Abstract African collage alternates solid pages with abstract capital letters. I'm concerned this abstraction will be confusing or frustrating for children trying to learn their letters. Without the key at the back, I could not identify either bananas, jungle, night, tribe, vase, xylophone, yams (i saw it after i knew) or impalas, kraal, orchids, wildebeest (simply not familiar enough to me). Yet, I'm hesitant to completely discard this book because there are few opportunities to experience the artistic flavors of Africa -- and from that perspective, the book is wonderful.
I didn’t like this book. It is appropriate for K-1 level. The illustrations are very detailed and fun to look at however it’s hard to match the picture with the letter it represents. Allie and I had trouble identifying some of them ourselves!!
Genre:Biography Grade:K-6 This book might not have many words and is filled with pictures, but it is a great way to give children a chance to use their imagination and the pictures are so colorful and filled with life. I live how the pictures make you wonder and guess what the letter of the alphabet is trying to point out. It's very beautiful and mind blowing how the illustrations in this picture book just come out at you, not in real life 3D but you can feel it's emotions which makes it feel like they're coming out at you. It's like you're there in the middle of the collage.
