Olivia stopped at a rundown gas station in the boondocks of Oklahoma, facing a crossroads and trying to decide which direction to take.
Across the universe wasn’t originally an option.
Olivia left home on her sixteenth birthday and hasn’t looked back since. She earned the money to buy a beat-up old Caribou camper and set off on a journey to see the world, or at least as much of it as she could drive to. Now with her funds tapped to the last jingle and winter setting in, she has to decide where she’s finally going to settle and put down roots. With a choice between two towns, she’s ready to let fate and the next flavor of sour gummy worm decide.
But her toss-up is interrupted by a new set of possibilities. And these will alter her reality forever. Olivia’s decision becomes whether to trust her eyes, or trust her heart.
Her heart wins.
Escaping the Army with a group of monstrous fugitives is just the first hurdle she has to overcome. Now that she’s committed to helping a group of aliens find their way home, she must face daily life or death struggles, and fight the true monsters lying in wait for them on the Bridge.
I was born and raised near Las Vegas, NV and grew up dreaming of rain. I also dreamt of heroes and villains and the women that inspired the best and worst in them.
It seemed like every book I read as a teen was a classic bodice-ripper. Wimpy-virgin-heroine always making bad choices and getting herself in trouble, cue the macho hero, yadda yadda yadda. Those books are what inspired me to write my own stories, not because I loved them, but because I constantly found myself tossing them aside and fuming. I would think of all the ways the story would have been better: if she had just picked up the sword and stabbed the bad guy when she had the chance...
I LOVE writing, and I love the new direction that fiction has taken over the last decade. So many amazing, strong female leads now! And so many new writers that finally have a voice in the indie publishing community.
I was blessed with a wonderful husband who supports my passion for writing and reading, and who really helped me focus my desire to publish my work. When I'm not busy enjoying my daughter and husband, I'm usually developing a new story idea, or sneaking in some time with my favorite authors.
I'm a bit of a hermit, they called it being "shy" when I was a kid, but I love hearing from fans. I also love ferrets, hiking, chili dark chocolate, strong coffee, nursing mamas, and rain.
Vanik is a science fiction story that takes the reader along on an adventure through multiple gates to many different worlds. Olivia is a young human girl who found herself helping a group of three vampire-esque aliens, that shortly thereafter changes to four as she helps assist in the birth of an alien child. Though on unfamiliar ground, Olivia manages not only to communicate with the aliens despite knowing their language, and steps up to the plate when a champion is needed to obtain transportation and supplies.
I thought it was a fun idea, to have a human struggle to understand the aliens. Alas, this was resolved when Olivia received a universal translator, like the ones in Star Trek: Next Generation. But I suppose it was necessary to do this. Still, it would have been interesting to see how Olivia would have managed with continued contact with Vanik or any other aliens.
This story involves gate travel from world to world to world. The author does an excellent job describing the planets for easy visualization. Olivia is a strong female character that prefers to hold her own or do it by herself. There were some occasions where she became the damsel in distress, but I think that helps with the romance factor of the book.
For me, I liked the world descriptions, the strong character and the overall story. The romance was ok for me, but I have no doubt that those who love romance will enjoy this story.
