Justin Hall #2

Tripoli's Target

Rate this book
Tripoli's Target is the second book in the wildly popular Justin Hall spy thriller series.

Justin Hall and Carrie O'Connor, Canadian Intelligence Service Agents, find themselves in lawless North Africa on the trail of an assassination plot. The target is the US President, and the hit is scheduled to take place during a G-20 summit in Libya's capital, Tripoli. But the source of their information is the deceitful leader of one of the deadliest terrorist groups in the area. Ambushes and questionable loyalties turn an already difficult mission into a dark maze of betrayal and misdirection.

Forced to return to Tripoli, Justin and Carrie dig up new intelligence pointing to a powerful Saudi prince bankrolling the assassination plan. What's worse, Justin and Carrie realize something crucial is very, very wrong with their plan. The summit is only forty-eight hours away and they still have to stop the Saudi prince, dismantle the assassination plot, and save the life of Tripoli's target.

Tripoli's Target promises to take the reader through a great story as it becomes the next international bestseller. Fans of David Baldacci, Vince Flynn, and Daniel Silva will love this high-octane spy thriller.

🎶 O, Canada! O, Canada!🎵

I seldom read any spy books from Canada. There just aren’t a lot of them to read. So when I find one that is out there, I am more than glad.

The Justin Hall spy thrillers are terrific! Filled with lots of suspense and mystery.

There’s lots of butt kicking action throughout this book. Every page is so enjoyable and so much fun to read.

Justin Hall is a great spy series and a great book to read. I’m so happy that Justin and his team is full of brutal violence at the right time, and softer if they need to be.

I love this series so much that I’ve purchased the next book in this series.

Stay tuned.

It’s time to travel with our Special Agent in the Canadian Intelligence Service, Justin Hall again. First, we froze with him while he was saving the world in the arctic in “Arctic Wargame”. Now, in a cruel twist of fate, or maybe his boss, Claire Johnson, just has a sad sense of humor, we now travel to the heat of the desert in Tripoli.

Justin Hall and his partner Carrie O’Connor have been sent to Tripoli. As in any good spy thriller, you never know who you can trust or what to believe. Ever since 9/11, the world has known suicide bombers and the devastation they cause. What was the mission this time? More land rights, control over oil, assassination of a world leader? Why does Justin always seem to be in the middle of the action, or the cause of it? Justin reminds me of a James Bond character, always trying to do the good thing, but always seems to take the worst in a fight.

Every turn Justin and Carrie take is met with difficulties, from every side possible, including their own organization. Who to trust, what to do, in an effort to keep the world leaders safe in their meeting, even if it means disobeying direct orders and taking on the enemy by themselves.

Will Justin save the day again? Travel along with Justin and Carrie and you’ll imagine yourself sweating along with them as the author does a great time of the descriptions of the areas they travel. You’ll have to read for yourself and see if Justin survives the heat of the desert, and the heat of the enemy.

This is Ethan Jones' second published novel, following the well-received Arctic Wargame. It continues the story of two Canadian Intelligence Service (CIS) Agents, Justin Hall and Carrie O'Conner, this time involving an assassination plot in North Africa.

As before, Mr. Jones proves he can write a good thriller novel, especially the plotting aspects. The story was well constructed and it served to advance the story arc of the two main characters. I also noticed the dialog was even better than the first book, showing the author's improving skills as a writer. I especially like the way the CIS activities are shown in relation to the other governments' activities such as the US, the Saudis, and Israel. It makes these novels different than just another spy novel.

I was a little disappointed in the characterization though as it seemed almost as if the author was trying too hard to "get the next book out" fast enough. While the main characters were fleshed out a little bit more from the first book, it seemed a deliberate attempt to provide some more oomph to them at the last minute and it was somewhat ineffective. The result was some wooden moments and a couple of out-of-the-blue plot points that left me scratching my head. Just enough to knock my rating down one star. The ending wrapped things up quickly and yet left enough open endings for the next book in the series. I look forward to the author's further polishing of his skills and the inevitable continuing adventures of Justin Hall.

TRIPOLI'S TARGET is the second novel featuring Canadian Intelligence agent Justin Hall and his partner Carrie O'Connor. They are back operating in North African from the Cairo station.

Their assignment is to slip back into Libya to meet with an Arab Sheikh part of a terrorist organization. He wanted a meeting to pass on important information. Justin is reluctant for a couple of reasons. He's a terrorist and Libya was where he'd been held prisoner and tortured a bit over a year ago.

One got orders though.

Things go bad immediately, the Sheikh leaving before they arrive as a series of suicide bombers set off explosions at international hotels all over Tripoli. One misfired and the driver was taken prisoner. "Interrogation" by Libyan authorities revealed a plot involving America and sent the two CIS agents to working with the CIA.

As Justin and Carrie turn up new clues, attacks are made on them and they get hamstrung by their boss, leaving them to go outside normal operations to figure out what is really going on.

Author Jones has two appealing characters and a writing style that keeps the action moving along, pacing it all nicely while moving toward the inevitable conclusion. He knows how to write thrillers.

Recommended.

Tripoli's Target is, in every sense of the word , a thriller set in the Middle East. With each book he writes Ethan Jones contimues to polish his craft, with this book being better written & more satisfying than was Arctic Wargame. Tripoli's Target steadily builds to a climax without ever forgetting that this is a thriller that has to continue to drive to that climax. The interesting twist is that the main characters are Canadian who denounce the United Stares at every opportunity, so many books are so oriented in the US that we, as readers, sometimes forget there are other nations out there with differing points of view.

This story has Justin and Carrie attempting to try and meet with a sheik to gather information. There is an attack which has the sheik avoid the location. They have another meet set up I a different location. This meet happens and based on the information that the sheik provides, it appears that the President of the United States is being setup for an assassination attempt in Tripoli. At this same meeting, the location of the meet comes under attack and the sheik is killed. One of the attack helicopters is shot down and Justin and Carrie are able to capture one of the parties involved.

Justin and Carrie go to Tripoli to assist the USA embassy with preparations for the President's visit. During their preparations they discover that a Saudi prince may be involved with the attack. They make a plan to see if they can gather information since it has been shown as a red herring. Their plan involves the use of a sports car from a Russian that Justin previously assisted. The car is being used as an inticement to have the meeting. During the meeting, Justin is captured and winds up on the Prince's plane.

If you want to find out how Justin was able to escape and also what the real planned attack was, then you need to read this book. I highly recommend it.

Wow, what a great story. I really enjoyed book one in the series ‘Arctic Wargame’ and this one was just as good. Justin Hall is one of those guys you want on your side, he just never gives up and has an amazing set of skills. I also like that these stories are based in different parts of the world. An excellent plot, made this a very entertaining read.
Justin Hall and Carrie O’Connor had a dangerous job working for the Canadian Intelligence Service, especially since their focus was on North Africa, which was one of the most volatile and dangerous parts of the world. They were currently in Cairo waiting to meet up with Sheikh Yusuf Ayman, a senior figure in the terrorist organization Islamic Fighting Alliance and try to find out who was responsible for multiple suicide bombings in Tripoli. Justin wasn’t too thrilled as he had a holiday booked with his fiancé Anna and was very much looking forward to some much-earned time off. However, this looked more and more like being put off as Justine and Carrie would probably need to head to Libya and find out what is really going on. This is a memorable book and certainly well worth reading. 5/5 Star Rating.

Ethan Jones has followed up his fine debut novel, Arctic Wargames, with this sequel. He has crafted a more concise action packed thriller. In this sequel, the primary characters demonstrate an internationally adept investigation service embroiled in turmoil in the middle east.

The storyline is well developed, interesting, flows well from scene to scene, and does not bog down. I was intrigued at every level while I read this novel. It was really difficult to put it down when life's responsibilities got in the way of reading this book.

I don't offer a synopsis of the novel in my reviews. Others will feel that need. I feel it is more important to discuss the writing style, character development, skill of the author, etc. To that end, Mr. Jones has shown himself to be a first rate author. Remember that this is only his second novel when you read it. I hope that you will be as impressed as I am.

I don't know how a married lawyer has the time to run a very active blog, write short stories, and novels and have time to breathe. Support this fine author and buy this novel.

Tripoli’s Target introduced me to Justin Hall, one of the operators in the Canadian Intelligence Service. In this story the Justin and the CiS receives information that there is going to be an attempt on the life of the president of the United States. As Justin dodges missiles and bullets he discovers that the target is not what it seems to be. The instigators are after another target and the leader of the conspiracy is from a ruling house that no one wants to irritate.

Justin weaves his way between the various sides, calls in some favors and at the same time tries to keep his fiancé happy since this case has fallen on their anniversary and planned cruise. He has the help of his fellow agent Carrie and a Libyan friend Abdul. The story is fast paced, up to date with the events going on in North Africa and an interesting read.

Tripoli’s Target by Ethan Jones

This is the second book in the Justin Hall series. Justin is a Canadian Intelligencer Service agent. This action laden adventure details his involvement in Middle East terrorist activities with his partner Carrie O’Connor.

Justin is a volatile character and reacts to many situation emotionally. Carrie, his partner, leavens his behavior with a little common sense. The plot can be pulled right off of the CNN news wire. Powerful Arabs trying to grab more oil wealth with out regard to who owns it or how many must die to wrest control is the plot summary. Revenge also plays a part in the intricacies of the plot.

Ethan Jones has a future in the world of thrillers. This book was an entertaining read.

I recommend it.

This is my second read by Ethan Jones and wasn't disappointed.

Tripoli's Target is another fast paced, action packed spy thriller with Justin Hall and Carrie O'Connor being strong characters in their race to divert an assassination plot in North Africa.

A very well constructed storyline with unexpected twists that had me on the edge of my seat with the action and at times some well timed comic relief.

I enjoyed this book immensely and looking forward to the next Justin Hall/Carrie O'Conner book. A definite must read

'Tripoli's Target' pulled me in and didn't let go. The storyline was incredibly detailed. From the scenic cities, the action scenarios and the thrilling suspense. The way the story played out was full of shocking betrayals and complex conspiracies that blew me away. Justin and Carrie are great leads. They are total bad-asses. I can't wait to read more of this series. A great add to your tbr list. Recommended read.

I'm still reading this series out of sequence. This is the fourth book I've read. There were a few editorial misses, but overall it was pretty clean.

I enjoyed this book as much as I did Arctic Wargame, which was a pleasant surprise! Carrie and Justin are trying to stop an assassination attempt this time in north Africa.

Ethan Jones in his second book of the Justin Hall series, Tripoli's Target, brings us another spy thriller featuring Justin Hall and Carrie O'Conner, Canadian Intelligence Service Agents. This time our adventure is in North Africa as the CIA experts attempt to spoil an assassination attempt in Tripoli, Libya's capital. Jones starts us off with a bang as we have a group of terrorist in separate vehicles communicating via radio, each with a target to destroy. All but one is a suicide bomber. Jones tells us this part of the story through the thoughts of this one. We see the fears as well as loyalty of these terrorists as this first time activist move in the direction of the bombings. The book begins fast pace and hooks the reader. Justin and Carrie are called in and given assignments. Soon however the story gets a bit bogged down not exemplary of Jones' writing. Perhaps too many changes and too few clarifying details. Simply lost my interest for awhile. As we come to the ending chapter Jones picks up his trade skill and gives us a great ending.
I wish he had expanded on the issue with Johnson and her less than ethical handling of Justin and Carrie's assignments and safety. Was a perfect opportunity to build a suspenseful 2nd layer in the CIS team. Also think we could have seen a bit more of the parental skills and desires of both Justin and Carrie had they been given more time or responsibility with child (not being specific her to avoid spoiler)
As is often the case with a good spy thriller, things are often not as they seem. I really enjoyed the twist Jones gave us with the event bring the Prince into our plot. The personal touch with Justin's and his dad's relationship gave us a view of the character that Jones sometimes forgets we need. I look forward to seeing more of that. The difference Jones penned among different countries' protective/investigative agencies gave insight and made this story more interesting.
As always, I enjoyed Ethan Jones' writing and find his character, Justin Hall, to not only be entertaining but also easy to identify with in that he is written as a skin and bones type guy and not a red cape and tights character.

Tripoli's Target
Justin Hall #2
by Ethan Jones

Canadian Intelligence Service agent Justin Hall is back and this time Libya is under threat from terrorists. And Justin is not alone on the case, his partner Carrie O'Connor is hard at work on the case as well.

Sheikh Ayman of the Islamic Fighting Alliance cancels a meeting with the CIS agents at the last minute and then makes a hasty exit via Cairo International Airport. As the agents ponder this change of plans Tripoli is rocked by a series of car bombs and the agents temporary base of operation comes under fire.

When Sheikh Ayman reschedules the meeting in Sudan on-board an Egyptian helicopter from which they repel to meet up with their contact. But when they finally get to their meeting with Sheikh Ayman they are shocked at the intelligence he is offering - there is an assassination planned during the upcoming G20 conference. But before Justin and Carrie can get more information a Mossad assault is launched on this secret meeting, killing the Sheikh and most of his men. Justin and Carrie are left wondering who betrayed them. Was it an ally or were the extremists sold-out by their own?

With just days to stop an assassination Justin and Carrie must return to Libya, where they work with Libyan security and the American Embassy to uncover the truth. But the danger and the stakes are higher than either CIS agent realizes, Prince Al-Farhan is determined to make Justin pay for his last visit to Libya.

But nothing is as it seems and betrayal lurks around every corner. Can Justin and Carrie cut through all the misinformation in time to stop Prince Al-Farhan? With just days to stop an act of terror that could throw the world into chaos Justin and Carrie are on their own.

Tripoli's Target is an international thriller that will keep you guessing and wondering throughout the entire book. If you like excitement Justin Hall is just what you need.

I was provided an ARC of this title by the author for the purpose of this review. All opinions are my own.

Quick, interesting read. I like Justin and Carrie. I think they make a good team. It's a nice change to read a spy thriller that doesn't involve a CIA agent (LOL), the slight POV and opinions that come from the MCs being Canadian, are to me at least, interesting.

The one thing that made me worry a bit was Anna. It's a pet peeve (it really annoys me!) of mine that girlfriends/wives of people in these types of jobs start getting bitchy/complaining when said job - that they had full knowledge of prior to getting into a relationship! - gets in the way of real life plans. She wasn't as bad as I've read women written, but it was like the start of it and it made me worry she might be written as one of those types. Like I get it sucks, he missed some important things that they had planned, but like...he's a covert agent, he's doing important things that have global impact. I am sorry, but your birthday means shit in the scheme of things, Anna. And like, they met and got together in book #1 when he was stopping the invasion of Canada. So, she's not clueless. She knows what he does. It's not like they met when her was undercover as a retired gardener and had no clue what he was really like. I just hope she doesn't get worse, or God forbid, ask him to retire or stop what he's doing as the series goes on. Because yeah, that's annoying.

This is a fast-paced spy thriller set mostly in post Arab Spring north Africa -- Egypt and Libya.

A pair of undercover operatives with the Canadian Intelligence Service need to thwart a plot to attack world leaders (including the US President) at a G20 meeting in Tripoli. Working through contacts they have with the militant Islamist group behind the plot, they chase the bad guys around Egypt, Libya and the south of France. There's non-stop action, culminating in a last minute rescue mission at Tripoli, involving a plane crash.

The male agent is a bit too perfect (he has expertise in almost everything), but we don't get to know him all that well. Perhaps his character is more developed in the prequel to this story. There is a back story about his strained relationship with his wealthy father and there is a breakthrough in it towards the end of the story. Aside from that he comes across as a cartoon superhero.

Despite the shallow characters and some convenient coincidences, this is a fun read, especially if you suspend your disbelief while you turn the pages. In the final analysis, it's well paced and really exciting.

I received a free copy of this from the author.

Included in the box set of the first three Justin Hall books (with Arctic Wargames, previously read) and Fog of War: 9781311035608

Tripoli's Target:
From Arctic cold to desert heat. Much of the action takes place in Lybia but starts off in Egypt before an excursion to the Sudan - and later a trip to France. Justin and Carrie are in fine form in a fast-moving story, rife with misinformation, which at times is almost too far-fetched to be believable.

Fog of War:
This might be considered a direct continuation of the previous book - several plot elements are carried through. Once again the location shifts several times and some considerable armed mayem occurs, not always in 'hot spots'. Justin and Carrie are separated for much of the action; another agent accompanies him for part of the plot. While some of the events require suspension of disbelief the main plot thread is resolved satisfactorily (for most parties).

Several chapters from Book 4 are included at the end.

So in this book, the second in the Justin Hall series, this time Justin hall and his partner Carrie O'Connor go from the Arctic in North Canada to the deserts of Egypt and Libya. There has been a series of suicide bombings in Libya and one of their contact says that there will be more which will target Western leaders who are there for a conference. However they do not know who they can trust. Can they trust their boss Claire Johnson? Can they trust the police and they trust their contacts? Once again there are lots of well written action scenes but as well as that, we get to know the characters a little better and we get to know both their relationships with their families. This helps to develop the character's further and it made me want to read more about them. So overall a well written fast-paced book that definitely made me want to read the rest of the series. Highly recommended!

Tripoli's Target - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Justin Hall and Carrie O'Connor are in the thick of adventure and danger once more. This time the target is a head of state, due to take part in the G20 conference of VIPs and diplomats in Tripoli. Can the CIS Agents untangle the dark web of mystery and betrayal, in time to save the target?
Who's ordered the contract hit?

What happens during 'trial run' detonations at various hotels where diplomats will be staying?
Who do Carrie and Justin end up working with?

Assassination plots, kidnap and terrorism, betrayal and deceit leave Carrie and Justin in deadly situations where they can only rely on themselves and each other, as even their boss is involved.

Can they save POTUS and unmask the villain?

Yet another action-packed read from one of my favorite authors.

The plot is fast-paced and full of action. Ethan really understands the art of making a reader think he has the plot figured out just to be completely surprised by one of numerous twists and turns.

If you enjoy a mix of politics, spying and gun-battles I would highly recommend this series as well as some of the other series from this talented author.

Ethan Jones is simply one of the best at writing action packed spy thrillers. This is one of his earlier Justin Hall stories and I have to say it’s first class. Gripping story with turns and twists throughout, fascinating characters, both good and bad, adrenaline fuelled action scenes and vivid storytelling all create the perfect mix for an entertaining thriller. I really couldn’t stop reading it. It had me hooked from the start. I’m so glad there are now so many books in this series. If you like action, spies, thrillers and fast paced stories then this is for you. Great stuff.

Justin and Carrie are back at it and they're better than ever. A non-stop, roller-coaster ride of firefights, explosions, and traitors. Tripoli's Target kept me turning pages to see what would happen next. And it will keep me turning all the way into the next book, and the one after that, and the one after that, and so on, and so on. An excellent follow-up to Arctic Wargame. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Sorry to say that although I quite enjoyed the first book in the series, I have found it difficult to summon up a great deal of enthusiasm about this one. To me it is rather too simplistic and formulaic. It does not have enough to set it apart from other books of the same spy thriller genre. It is, I am informed, a very successful series, but it is not for me,so I am moving on!
