"The McGraw-Hill Desk Reference for Editors, Writers, and Proofreaders" by K.D. Sullivan is a comprehensive guidebook for anyone working in the field of editing, writing, and proofreading. The book serves as a useful resource for professionals and students alike, providing in-depth coverage of a wide range of topics that are critical to the success of these industries.

The book is divided into several sections, each of which covers a different aspect of the editing, writing, and proofreading process. The first section provides an overview of the basics of editing, including grammar, style, punctuation, and sentence structure. This section is particularly useful for those who are new to the field or those who need a quick refresher on the basics.

The second section focuses on writing, providing practical tips and advice on how to write effectively and communicate your ideas clearly. Topics covered in this section include writing for different audiences, writing for different mediums, and overcoming writer's block.

The third section is devoted to proofreading and provides a comprehensive guide to the various techniques used by proofreaders to catch errors and improve the quality of a text. The section covers both traditional proofreading techniques, such as checking for grammar and spelling errors, as well as more advanced techniques, such as checking for consistency and clarity.

One of the key strengths of this book is its attention to detail. Sullivan has done a great job of covering each topic in-depth, providing clear explanations and practical examples that help to bring the concepts to life. The book is well-organized, making it easy to find the information you need, and the writing style is clear and concise, making it easy to understand even for those with no prior experience in the field.

Overall, "The McGraw-Hill Desk Reference for Editors, Writers, and Proofreaders" is an excellent resource for anyone working in the field of editing, writing, and proofreading. Whether you are a seasoned professional or a student just starting out, this book provides the tools and information you need to succeed. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their skills in these areas or gain a better understanding of the editing, writing, and proofreading process.

I got this book off Amazon awhile back. I thought it was going to be more useful, to be honest. I suppose I have not forgotten as much as I thought. That said, for someone just starting out, this would be a great reference book.

So useful for beginning editors and anyone who needs a refresher. The checklists in the appendix are really thorough.
