Legend of the Dawn #1

Legend of the Dawn

Rate this book
Having been drawn to the wild for a number of years, young Luke McKinney is forced to leave 1839 St. Louis for the North Country even sooner than he expected to go. At seventeen, along with a female companion and an elderly father figure, he is literally running for his life.

With the law pursuing him and the wilderness unforgiving, he finds himself caught up in a survival system that has nothing to do with civilization or laws.

Then the unthinkable happens, the love of his life is taken from him. It is during the pursuit of her captors that Luke finds a strength and determination that will shape his moral existence for the remainder of his life.

This is a trilogy of books that spans the lives of Luke McKinney and Breanne Bruyere, their undying love, through hell and high water, for over fifty years.

Daring, thrilling, romantic, historic... What else is there? UNFORGETABLE!

This was a great book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The author set up the characters and plot quickly enough as to keep interest, and the action started early in this book.

It was clear that the author is very knowledgeable about the time period and the locations.

Some of the characters came and went as fast as they do in a modern action movie, but the main characters survive… with a twist.

I am not into spoilers in reviews. But, I will have to say for this review that this book is filled with more ironic tragedy than a good Shakespearian tragedy. I couldn’t believe it sometimes, irony… tragedy…tragedy… irony. I would think that women may like this book as well.

It can be a real tear jerker at times.

Truly, out of all of the books that I have read in recent history I really believe that this one is best laid out to become a movie. One could easily imagine this becoming or being adapted to be one. It has a love story with action, emotion, landscape, on an historically accurate setting.

It wasn’t too terribly long. I read it in a few evening sittings. However it is part of a trilogy and was left a cliff hanger. I guess I will have to read to the next one to find out what happens now. Will the ironic tragedy end? I will have to read the next book to find out… Can’t wait.

Great book that tells of frontier life that is harsh and unforgiving. Follow Luke McKinney as he heads to the wilderness and tries to survive. this is also a tale of an unforgettable love story and the reader is swept up in the saga. I can't wait to get lost in the rest of the books. The author did a great job making the reader feel like they had gone back in time. This is an amazing adventure that readers don't want to miss.

This book has chapters with different people narrating the story about how they met and the challenges Pierre, Luke and Sarah had. The frontier life is harsh for all three of them. I didn't realize this was a trilogy when I got the first one free.

3.5 stars for the first book of the trilogy, "Legend of the Dawn". It's about Luke and Breanne and their undying love for each other over 50 years. In this book they escape to head off with a friend to become beaver trappers when Breanne gets kidnapped by Indians. Good period piece starting in the 1830's.

Admittedly, this isn't my genre. I'm a romance reader at heart, so 99% of the books I read are by women. I like a book that tells all the frills of the relationship and really builds up a love. This isn't that. This is different. BUT still good. My only real complaint about this book is the amount of death. I don't know if that is a common thing in this genre, but for me it was shocking. Not gory really, just a shocking number of deaths (and they weren't all bad guys).

This book follows the story of two teenage orphans (Luke & Breanne) that fall in love and the interesting old fellow that escorts them on their journey to start a new life together. This isn't a romance in the traditional sense, its more of a frontier adventure with a romance element. Lots of ironic twists and turns makes for an interesting, albeit farfetched storyline. There are no "love" scenes. The first time it says explicitly that they are sleeping together
When finished, he invited Breanne into the cozy space where they near immediately made love. It was only fitting they did so now in celebration of this most joyous occasion!

I literally laughed out loud, because the last book I read was one of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and the love scenes in those are a STARK contrast. The love scenes later on are a bit more "advanced" than that one, but not much, so a pretty safe read in that aspect.

All of that being said, I really enjoyed the story. The twists and turns were exciting, the love story was believable, and I really cared about what happened to the main characters at the end. I immediately purchased the next one in the trilogy and fully expect to buy the last one as well.

I found this book average. I rate a book on several things, one of which is historical accuracy, which shouldn't even be an issue nowadays. This one had me scratching my head about the Mormon missionary. I wasn't aware, even during that time, that they traveled alone and the part about their Bible saying something about the asses is bogus. Although not a Mormon, I've done enough research to know that just isn't true. The book is fiction, but if an author includes inaccuracies such as this, the story is called into question for me.

There seemed to be a lot of action packed into it after the first 30% or so but it still dragged in several places. The biggest problem I had was although it's the first of a trilogy, it leaves you forced to buy subsequent books to see what happens to the characters. Trilogy means each is complete in itself, but part of a group of three. This was not the case here.
