I felt very torn reading this book. I feel and believe that this book has a lot of information to offer and because of that, I still keep it. However, being one who loves animals, I could never harm an animal, not on purpose. I simply do not believe in animal sacrifice. That was my only beef with this book. I find animals to be the link between humanity and empathy and that empathy goes beyond what is merely human. I do however understand why people believe in animal sacrifice. It is true, to some extent, that animal sacrifice can be a very respectful act, but what bothers me about it, is that despite what others say about it being a good thing because it's going to the gods, I do not believe that a life is something that should be taken simply because to the gods it's seen as a gift. I see it as a theft. Now, I am not saying that death is an enemy. Quite contrar. Death can be a release especially from a life full of pain, whether it's physical or psychological, but to take another's life without the permission of the said individual, no matter the species, to me, goes against what sacrifice is supposed to be about. Sacrifice should be given willfully... not against another's will. That being said, I know there are those out there who would argue with me that the point of having life is always to preserve it and so it would make sense to take it simply because very few are willing to give it up because our instincts are always about keeping us all alive. Well, yeah, duh. Also why I believe there are other ways to give sacrifice without taking a life. Also, just because many people who do believe in animal sacrifice because they either see the animals' lives as less worthy than our own (simply because of food chain hierarchy) and that they would end up being food otherwise, at least this gives them respect towards the gods, I also don't see it that way because devaluing a life simply because they are seen as "less than" does not justify taking a life. Plus, you cannot speak for those of the past, because I'm pretty sure that many in the past, probably even more then than now, didn't value animal life because they saw them as food. And if you ask me, food, no matter the species, should have GREATER VALUE than less value, because they are feeding our bodies. Our whole western modern day view of separating ourselves from our connection with our food source is staggering. True, it takes a lot of emotional buffer and separating yourself from empathy in order to eat. I will never argue against that. I get hungry enough, something's going to die. Sacrifice for food, I can understand, but last I checked, the gods have no mouths, so to me, unless it is for the benefit of the community and seen as a feast as well, then that I'm okay with, but only with certain animals. I do not believe in sacrificing "animal companions" simply because they are only food to us if there isn't anything else around. I cannot break that bond. It is too deep seeded in me. It would be a betrayal of trust.
