It has been a long time since I’ve reviewed a book at 5 stars. What puts this book above others for me is the unique twist of using a real life person as the hero of a fiction novel. The publisher has referred to this as his "fictionalized erotic memoir." The fact this person is also the co-author, a doctor, a model, and Mr. USA not once, but twice? This by itself makes for a crazy mix in an erotic romance novel. The whole time reading this book I kept thinking, “Is this real? Is that real?” It truly makes for a one of a kind reading experience that I’m looking forward to continuing in the sequels. Pour a glass of Mollydooker and settle in. This is one of my very rare long reviews.
The hero of this story is Dr. Ivan Rusilko. Everything we learn personally about Dr. Ivan in the book appears to be true in real life such as the tattoos, his career, accomplishments, where he is from, etc. That is a crazy feeling being able to see the character and get to know the character all the while trying to wrap your mind around this character is not a character at all, but a real person. In a fiction novel. Huh? Exactly! Bizarre? Yes. Cool? Very. Disturbing? Sometimes. I really hope some crazy stalker person doesn’t think they really ‘know’ Dr. Ivan and go all book crazy on him. If this guy is anything like he comes across in the novel then female readers are going to be swooning in all sorts of new swooning fashion. It takes away the argument, “Yeah, but real life men are not like the men in novels. You have to write them that way.” Sigh. Listen up husbands and boyfriends. Dr. Ivan may have just made your dating lives more difficult. ;) What I enjoy the most about this hero is his sense of humor. This guy can banter! He is not pretentious no matter the titles he carries and just makes you feel like he’d be great to hang out with even if you’re not the one dating him. I also like how he uses ‘girl’ appropriately in phrasing and actually pulls off using ‘baby girl’ without making me gag.
Jaden Thorne is the heroine of this story and she is just as likable as the doctor. Now, this is the part that confuses me. Is Jaden based on anyone real or are she and the circumstances she brings what makes this a fictitious novel? Jaden is a sweet girl, who also seems to be blessed with the gorgeous genes. She has become the head chef at a Miami restaurant and the whirlwind romance and career path she is on makes for all kinds of good reading. I’m under the assumption (I could be wrong) that co-author Everly Drummond is the master mind behind the voice of Jaden and I would love to pick the authors’ brains on how in the heck they made this book work! I want to make sure Ms. Drummond gets her kudos in this literary venture as she has background of writing romance. I truly enjoyed this book however Ms. Drummond and Dr. Ivan pulled it off. I definitely invested in Jaden and not once did I not want her to be with Ivan or roll my eyes at her. I’d love to be friends with this gal in real life…if she was the real one in this story? :D
The steamy scenes in this book are hot but not over kill. Budding romance always brings chemistry but these two, the chemistry is amazing. The characters fit together and it does make the reader yearn to feel that chemistry as well. Gotta say, it's a bit weird reviewing on this book's steamy scenes knowing the guy I'd normally comment about at this point could read this review. So, as much as I'd like to go into the holy hotness of this book, well...er...um...yeah. I will say I'm quite impressed with his hands.
This relationship also brings about heavy questions in life of following dreams, following your heart, or if it’s possible to get the two on the same page? I did question at one point where in the heck is the conflict of this story? All great romances have to struggle, right? Well, I have to eat crow here and pat the authors on the back for doing a great job of holding off on the conflict long enough for me to realize it and then BAM! Conflict arrives and my heart breaks for the characters. I asked for it though, right? Great timing in the writing here which made the ‘all- knowing’ reviewer slap her own hand and smile that I’d been wrong.
Speaking of all-knowing reviewer, it is so rare that a writer can surprise me or that I don’t see something coming a mile away. Well, these two writers did it which made me love the book a little bit more just for ‘getting’ me. There is a scene I didn’t realize what was happening until the character found out what was happening. I know that’s how it is supposed to work, but I read so much, it rarely works that way for me anymore. Again, nice timing with the writers. I chuckled after reading this scene. Literally chuckled at its cuteness and that they 'got' me.
Another thing that made me like this book a little more? Bacon. There is bacon in this book!! Love the Rusilko family and how they are portrayed.
Some of my favorite quotes are:
“I wonder what he does for a living,” Tasha mused, still intrigued by the group of people sitting at the front of the tent. “He must be an athlete or something, because guys who look like that don’t rely on their intelligence, if you know what I mean.”
“Were you watching me?” “No. I was watching you watch me. There’s a difference.”
“Right now I’m just a guy…desperate for you to give him a chance. Nothing more.”
Do I really need to come right out and say I recommend this book? I’d also recommend reading the two short stories that perfectly set the stage to begin reading this novel. I am really looking forward to seeing where Drummond and Rusilko take this story line. I still have no clue how much of this plot is fact or fiction and I guess the answer to that is what determines the outcome of Jaden and Dr. Ivan. I raise my glass to both authors and wish them great success with this series. And I’m sending special mojo vibes to Dr. Ivan that his real life doesn’t get too confused with his fictional life, so we can all continue to enjoy both. "Salute!"
